The Flutists of the John Philip Sousa’s Band: A Study of the Flute Section and Soloists

The Sousa Band is widely known because of its leader and his compositions. Although it was one of the most successful ensembles in history, most of the instrumentalists and individuals who contributed to its success have had their legacies forgotten. The flute section of the Sousa Band is an example of a group of musicians who were recognized as some of the best in the United States during their time, but are neglected by the present flute community. My research focused on gathering data about the flute section and the individuals who were instrumental for the creation and development of the Sousa Band. An extensive investigation through old newspapers, old music journals, multiple publications on John Philip Sousa and his band, and the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign demonstrated that a considerable amount of information on the flute players was scattered throughout government documents, such as military registers and census, local newspapers, old advertisements of instruments’ factories, obituaries, small entries on flute books, ancestry websites, and private collections. Therefore, I found it important to study them in order to produce a document that preserves and brings their legacy to light. The findings of my investigation demonstrate how significant the flute section was both to the Sousa Band and the music community at large. The flute and piccolo players were frequently featured as soloists with prominent ensembles, and their virtuosity and expertise made them not only acclaimed performers but also relevant teachers during their time. Additionally, my research shows how important those flute players were in the recording industry. They occupied permanent positions in recording studios and were featured on hundreds of records by the most important recording labels of their time. Finally, my document may serve as an addition to flute books and encyclopedias as it covers a missing part of the history of the flute and piccolo in the United States at the turn of the 20th century. Emphasizing the role played by the flute section of the Sousa Band in this period, this document provides biographical information on the main flute players and teachers who were part of this section. It also provides information about some of their students who became influential musicians and university professors who passed along the legacy of the flute players of the Sousa Band to the next generations

Do Sensível ao Inteligível: novos rumos comunicacionais em saúde por meio do estudo da Teoria Quântica

The purpose of this study is to present a theoretical reflection about the relation between the Human Being, health and disease concepts, and the perspectives stemming from the development of the Quantum Theory. It presents arguments for the comprehension that, from the moment where the spiritual dimension is recognized, there is the need for reformulation of concepts that guide the professional practice, since they make interpretation possible and direct the communicational response that, in the case of healthcare, results in the service provided to the patient. The study also understands that the necessity of furthering the communicational level exerted on people is imperative to provide care and to comprehend the spiritual dimension of the Human Being.Este estudio se propone presentar una reflexión teórica sobre la relación entre los conceptos de Ser Humano, salud y enfermedad, y las perspectivas provenientes del desarrollo de la Teoría Cuántica. Presenta argumentos para la comprensión de que a partir del momento en que se reconoce la dimensión espiritual, existe la necesidad de realizar reformulaciones de los conceptos que orientan la práctica profesional, una vez que son estos los que posibilitan la interpretación y dirigen la respuesta de comunicación que, en el caso de la salud, resulta en la atención al enfermo. Entiende como imperativa la necesidad de atender y comprender la dimensión espiritual del Ser Humano y, de profundizar el nivel de comunicación que ejercemos con las personas.Este estudo se propõe a apresentar uma reflexão teórica sobre a relação entre os conceitos de Ser Humano, saúde e doença, e as perspectivas advindas com o desenvolvimento da Teoria Quântica. Apresenta argumentos para a compreensão de que a partir do momento em que há o reconhecimento da dimensão espiritual, existe a necessidade de reformulações dos conceitos que norteiam a prática profissional, uma vez que são estes que possibilitam a interpretação e direcionam a resposta comunicacional que, no caso da saúde, resulta no atendimento ao doente. Entende como imperativa a necessidade, para o atendimento e compreensão da dimensão espiritual do Ser Humano, do aprofundamento do nível comunicacional que exercemos com as pessoas

Significado de la espiritualidad para la enfermería en cuidados intensivos

Tratou-se de um estudo descritivo-exploratório, de abordagem qualitativa, que objetivou identificar o significado de espiritualidade para a equipe de enfermagem de Unidade de Cuidados Intensivos e investigar como os valores de espiritualidade dos profissionais interferem no processo de cuidar. Foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas, com trinta e quatro profissionais da equipe de enfermagem intensiva de um hospital público do município de São Paulo. As categorias de análise foram: A dimensão espiritual e seus significados, composta pelas subcategorias: Fé e crença religiosa; Crença em uma força/poder superior; Bem-estar espiritual e atributo do espírito, e a outra categoria emergente foi: Entre o Vínculo e o conflito: a influência de valores no cuidado ao paciente gravemente enfermo, subdividida em: os valores religiosos e os valores bioéticos. A multiplicidade de significados refletiu a multidimensionalidade conceitual expressa na literatura e estiveram relacionadas às condições emocionais da própria equipe de enfermagem, por interferirem nas relações de empatia e nas questões existenciais

Inclusion of students with down syndrome in Brazilian schools

Down syndrome, or chromosome 21 trisomy, is a genetic change that occurs at the time of conception of a child. People with Down syndrome have intellectual disabilities, this fact contributes to social exclusion, isolation and impairment in their development, since there is much social prejudice regarding this syndrome. Considering the need to include children with Down Syndrome In schools this research aimed to promote a reflection on the process of inclusion of these people in Brazilian schools through the assistive technologies used. This research is an integrative literature review where the search took place in databases of greater relevance to the subject. The exact descriptors of medical subject titles were used in English using "Mainstreaming (Education)", "Down Syndrome" and "Schools" and in Portuguese the exact descriptors in the health sciences "Educational Inclusion", "Down Syndrome" and Schools”. The results showed that the insertion of the child is only physical and only due to the obligation promoted by the current national legislation. Social inclusion does not occur in such a way as to integrate students, teachers and technicians, and teachers are unprepared to drive inclusion due to limitations in their education, lack of incentive to qualification, school infrastructure and large numbers of students in the classroom. In accordance with this reality, this paper aims to promote a reflection on the inclusion of students with Down syndrome in Brazilian schools, through the discussion and development of appropriate assistive technologies for this process to occur effectively

Atuação da fisioterapia na UTI / Physiotherapy performance at UTI

Introdução: A atuação do fisioterapeuta nos centros de unidade de terapia intensiva é indispensável para a diminuição dos efeitos deletérios advindos do imobilismo prolongado e afecções clínicas. Objetivo: Esta pesquisa possui como objetivo geral mostrar a atuação do fisioterapeuta dentro da unidade de terapia intensiva e como objetivo especifico verificar quais condutas são utilizadas por esses profissionais na assistência que visam a melhora clínica e funcional dos pacientes. Método: Para a realização desse trabalho, foi realizado um levantamento bibliográfico no período compreendido entre fevereiro e abril de 2019, utilizando uma busca da literatura nos sites do Ministério da Saúde, COFFITO e por meio de consulta nas bases de dados eletrônicos Scielo, PubMed, Google Acadêmico e MEDLINE. Resultados: Observou-se a eficácia das condutas fisioterapêuticas na melhora clínica, funcional e no ganho de força dos pacientes que receberam tais intervenções, além do mais, a fisioterapia pode reduzir o tempo de internação hospitalar dos pacientes. Conclusão: É notório a importância do fisioterapeuta em está inserido no contexto hospitalar para possibilitar uma diminuição das morbidades adquiridas no período de internação e posteriormente melhorar a qualidade de vida desses pacientes após a alta hospitalar.

Desenvolvimento de Diabetes Mellitus na síndrome de Cushing

A Síndrome de Cushing (SC) é uma condição de anormalidades clínicas com altos níveis crônicos de cortisol ou de corticoides como os adrenocorticotróficos (ACTH). Os principais sintomas da SC são face em lua, obesidade do tronco, bolsas de gordura cervicais e dorsais e extremidades distais finas e descontrole glicêmico. Descrever a relação no desenvolvimento de diabetes em pacientes com Síndrome de Cushing. Pesquisa narrativa de artigos nas plataformas Scielo, CAPES e PubMed entre os anos 2018 e 2023 nas línguas português, inglês e espanhol. A SC acarreta o desenvolvimento de diabetes mellitus, e está presente em cerca de 15 a 50% dos pacientes, além de apresentar resistência à glicose devido ao excesso do hormônio glicocorticóide (GC) endógeno, essa exacerbação resulta na resistência à insulina e disfunção nas células beta, diminuindo assim a exocitose da insulina. Os GC quando estão em excesso, aumentam a produção de glicose no fígado estimulando a gliconeogênese, e nos músculos esqueléticos inibindo a síntese de glicogênio. A Síndrome de Cushing é uma condição que pode agravar o quadro de diabetes mellitus devido às suas complicações clínicas como a resistência à insulina e aumento da glicemia pelo hormônio glicocorticoide. Devendo assim os pacientes com essas duas patologias um cuidado redobrado no controle nos níveis de glicose na corrente sanguínea

The Work of The Deaf teacher at The University

The deaf teacher is a professional who differs from another in the way he communicates, and the language used by these professionals is the Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS). The objective: to verify the inclusion of deaf teachers in higher education as well as to verify the assistive technologies that contribute to this process and the reality of these professionals. The methodology was a literature review of articles published between 2009 and 2017. Data werecollected from the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) and National Library of Medicine (PUBMED), using the keywords: teachers, deafness, universities, inclusion, assistive technologies and disability. The results showed that the inclusion of deaf teachers in higher education occurs due to the laws that determine the appointment of deaf teaching professionals as priorities for teaching LIBRAS courses in universities, being LIBRAS an Assistive Technology (TA) for the inclusion of these professionals. However, deaf teachers showed isolation due to the difficulty of communication with other teachers, having difficulties to exchange experiences beyond the strangeness of the students, about the didactics, methodology and evaluation of the deaf teacher

Oficinas Participativas na Elaboração do Plano de Manejo da APA-VRT

O presente artigo trata dos processos de participação social e política na produção do Plano de Manejo da Área de Proteção Ambiental da Várzea do Rio Tietê (APA-VRT) localizada no estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Esta APA é composta por doze municípios, foi criada em 1987 e seu plano de manejo foi realizado mais de 20 anos depois. O trabalho de produção deste documento iniciou em 2011 e foi conduzido por pesquisadores da Universidade de São Paulo. Neste artigo descreveremos e analisaremos os processos relativos à organização e implementação da oficina de Diagnóstico Socioambiental nas quais se assentaram os primeiros contatos entre Estado e sociedade civil em torno ao tema do plano de manejo da APA-VRT
