Oxygen clamps in gold nanowires

We investigate how the insertion of an oxygen atom in an atomically thin gold nanowire can affect its rupture. We find, using ab initio total energy density functional theory calculations, that O atoms when inserted in gold nanowires form not only stable but also very strong bonds, in such a way that they can extract atoms from a stable tip, serving in this way as a clamp that could be used to pull a string of gold atoms.Comment: 4 pages; 4 figure

Reclassificação de polígonos no formato vetorial.

O processo de reclassificação (agregação ou desagregação) é necessário quando se quer gerar um novo mapa a partir de um já existente. Aqui não se trata de dados na forma matricial, mas de dados vetoriais exigidos para elaboração de mapas temáticos com certa precisão cartográfica, onde os contornos precisam possuir a foram de linha. Sendo assim o objetivo deste trabalho é desenvolver uma aplicação que possibilite a reclassificação de polígonos (classe temáticas) em outros mapas vetoriais

Heavy-ion Physics at a Fixed-Target Experiment Using the LHC Proton and Lead Beams (AFTER@LHC): Feasibility Studies for Quarkonium and Drell-Yan Production

We outline the case for heavy-ion-physics studies using the multi-TeV lead LHC beams in the fixed-target mode. After a brief contextual reminder, we detail the possible contributions of AFTER@LHC to heavy-ion physics with a specific emphasis on quarkonia. We then present performance simulations for a selection of observables. These show that $\Upsilon(nS)$, $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ production in heavy-ion collisions can be studied in new energy and rapidity domains with the LHCb and ALICE detectors. We also discuss the relevance to analyse the Drell-Yan pair production in asymmetric nucleus-nucleus collisions to study the factorisation of the nuclear modification of partonic densities and of further quarkonia to restore their status of golden probes of the quark-gluon plasma formation.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

Nonrelativistic Limit of the Scalar Chern-Simons Theory and the Aharonov-Bohm Scattering

We study the nonrelativistic limit of the quantum theory of a Chern-Simons field minimally coupled to a scalar field with quartic self-interaction. The renormalization of the relativistic model, in the Coulomb gauge, is discussed. We employ a procedure to calculate scattering amplitudes for low momenta that generates their $|p|/m$ expansion and separates the contributions coming from high and low energy intermediary states. The two body scattering amplitude is calculated up to order $p^2/m^2$. It is shown that the existence of a critical value of the self-interaction parameter for which the 2-particle scattering amplitude reduces to the Aharonov-Bohm one is a strictly nonrelativistic feature. The subdominant terms correspond to relativistic corrections to the Aharonov-Bohm scattering. A nonrelativistic reduction scheme and an effective nonrelativistic Lagrangian to account for the relativistic corrections are proposed.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, revtex, to be published in Int.
