Quasi-perpendicular fast magnetosonic shock with wave precursor in collisionless plasma

A one-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation tracks a fast magnetosonic shock over time scales comparable to an inverse ion gyrofrequency. The magnetic pressure is comparable to the thermal pressure upstream. The shock propagates across a uniform background magnetic field with a pressure that equals the thermal pressure upstream at the angle 85$^\circ$ at a speed that is 1.5 times the fast magnetosonic speed in the electromagnetic limit. Electrostatic contributions to the wave dispersion increase its phase speed at large wave numbers, which leads to a convex dispersion curve. A fast magnetosonic precursor forms ahead of the shock with a phase speed that exceeds the fast magnetosonic speed by about $\sim 30 \%$. Non-linear effects and shock formation in the focusing of a spherical acoustic wave : Numerical simulations and experiments in liquid helium

The focusing of acoustic waves is used to study nucleation phenomena in liquids. At large amplitude, non-linear effects are important so that the magnitude of pressure or density oscillations is difficult to predict. We present a calculation of these oscillations in a spherical geometry. We show that the main source of non-linearities is the shape of the equation of state of the liquid, enhanced by the spherical geometry. We also show that the formation of shocks cannot be ignored beyond a certain oscillation amplitude. The shock length is estimated by an analytic calculation based on the characteristics method. In our numerical simulations, we have treated the shocks with a WENO scheme. We obtain a very good agreement with experimental measurements which were recently performed in liquid helium. The comparison between numerical and experimental results allows in particular to calibrate the vibration of the ceramics used to produce the wave, as a function of the applied voltage.Comment: 20 pages, 26 figures. "Construire l’Europe des hommes libres" dans les annèes d’après-guerre en France

Al finalizar la segunda guerra mundial –la tercera que se entabló en 75 años–, alemanes y franceses empezaron a pensar en una verdadera «construcción europea » y fundaron en 1948 la Organización de Cooperación Económica (OECE) destinada a crear un gran Mercado Común Europeo. Ya conocemos todas las etapas de esta construcción económica pero lo que nos ha interesado más precisamente, es el aspecto cultural e ideológico de esta unión europea cuyas primicias se vislumbran en la postura adoptada por ciertos autores de literatura juvenil de los años que siguieron al final de la segunda guerra mundial. Hemos seleccionado doce novelas para adolescentes, publicadas a partir de 1937, cuyos autores intentan claramente convencer a los jóvenes de la postguerra de la urgencia de una verdadera reconciliación capaz de provocar la emergencia de una auténtica identidad europea. À l’issue de la seconde guerre mondiale –la troisième qu'ils se firent en 75 ans–, Allemands et Français commencèrent à penser à une véritable «construction européenne» en fondant dès 1948 l’Organisation Européenne de Coopération Économique (OECE) destinée à déboucher sur un grand Marché Commun européen. Nous connaissons tous les étapes de cette construction économique mais ce qui nous a plus particulièrement intéressée, c’est plutôt l’aspect culturel et idéologique de cette union européenne dont on voit les prémisses dans la posture adoptée par certains auteurs de littérature de jeunesse des années qui suivirent la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale. Nous avons donc sélectionné douze romans pour adolescents, publiés à partir de 1937, et dont les auteurs tentent sans équivoque de convaincre les adolescents de l’après-guerre de l’urgence d’une véritable réconciliation capable de susciter l’émergence d’une authentique identité européenne
