    Bounded Model Checking for Probabilistic Programs

    In this paper we investigate the applicability of standard model checking approaches to verifying properties in probabilistic programming. As the operational model for a standard probabilistic program is a potentially infinite parametric Markov decision process, no direct adaption of existing techniques is possible. Therefore, we propose an on-the-fly approach where the operational model is successively created and verified via a step-wise execution of the program. This approach enables to take key features of many probabilistic programs into account: nondeterminism and conditioning. We discuss the restrictions and demonstrate the scalability on several benchmarks

    Accounting for the formation of scientific fields in organization studies

    © 2018 Elsevier Ltd There are few qualitative organizational accounts that explore the constitution of scientific fields in management. We developed a methodology for understanding the academic modes of scientific knowledge production in management research from the perspective of the sociology of scientific knowledge (SSK) and actor-network theory (ANT). SSK and ANT offer a way to account for how scientific fields in organization studies are enacted. Key to this process are splitting and inversion of statements; credibility and network formation; and the concepts of credit, trajectory, and position. Specific statements making key knowledge claims (e.g., handbooks, special editions) are situated in academic practices that obscure those rhetorical strategies that enable the production of a network of knowledge that can act, organizationally, as a more or less unified sub-field. We take as a starting point a collection of texts, dated 2011, which sought to systematize the main currents of a disciplinary sub-field during the last decade, focusing on how statements are transformed into scientific certainty and how the question of credibility is established. The sub-field is that of organizational learning (OL). The particular language of OL relies on approaches that make its epistemic assumptions intelligible within a network. It is a language that tends to reify and naturalize specific practices that become accredited as organization learning. The material/textual artifacts that sustain these practices, instead of being reified, can be reframed as enacting a scientific field whose resignification acts upon the network that enabled its existence

    Adaptive Optics for Astronomy

    Adaptive Optics is a prime example of how progress in observational astronomy can be driven by technological developments. At many observatories it is now considered to be part of a standard instrumentation suite, enabling ground-based telescopes to reach the diffraction limit and thus providing spatial resolution superior to that achievable from space with current or planned satellites. In this review we consider adaptive optics from the astrophysical perspective. We show that adaptive optics has led to important advances in our understanding of a multitude of astrophysical processes, and describe how the requirements from science applications are now driving the development of the next generation of novel adaptive optics techniques.Comment: to appear in ARA&A vol 50, 201

    An Assessment and Extension of the Mechanism-Based Approach to the Identification of Age-Period-Cohort Models.

    : Many methods have been proposed to solve the age-period-cohort (APC) linear identification problem, but most are not theoretically informed and may lead to biased estimators of APC effects. One exception is the mechanism-based approach recently proposed and based on Pearl's front-door criterion; this approach ensures consistent APC effect estimators in the presence of a complete set of intermediate variables between one of age, period, cohort, and the outcome of interest, as long as the assumed parametric models for all the relevant causal pathways are correct. Through a simulation study mimicking APC data on cardiovascular mortality, we demonstrate possible pitfalls that users of the mechanism-based approach may encounter under realistic conditions: namely, when (1) the set of available intermediate variables is incomplete, (2) intermediate variables are affected by two or more of the APC variables (while this feature is not acknowledged in the analysis), and (3) unaccounted confounding is present between intermediate variables and the outcome. Furthermore, we show how the mechanism-based approach can be extended beyond the originally proposed linear and probit regression models to incorporate all generalized linear models, as well as nonlinearities in the predictors, using Monte Carlo simulation. Based on the observed biases resulting from departures from underlying assumptions, we formulate guidelines for the application of the mechanism-based approach (extended or not).<br/

    Cerebral venous thrombosis: an unexpected complication from spinal surgery

    PURPOSE: To provide new insights into the pathophysiology, prevention and diagnosis of cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) associated with iatrogenic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks and/or external CSF drainage. METHODS: Case report and literature review. RESULTS: We describe the case of a 30-year-old woman who developed a CSF fistula after lumbar spinal surgery. The treatment included rest, hydration, caffeine, and continuous lumbar CSF drainage. After closure of the fistula, the patient complained of severe orthostatic headache. Thrombosis involving the superior sagittal sinus, the right transverse sinus, the right sigmoid sinus, and the right jugular vein was diagnosed after neurological deterioration. CONCLUSION: A few reports have associated CVT with various forms of spinal meningeal injury. However, it has been rarely documented following spinal surgery complicated by accidental durotomy and/or external lumbar CSF drainage. CSF hypovolemia may precipitate CVT in patients having prothrombotic risk factors. Patients who have or had CSF leaks and/or lumbar CSF drains who present with symptoms of intracranial CSF hypotension should remain in the horizontal position to prevent CVT. In that context, the diagnosis of CVT depends on a high degree of suspicion
