Conceived as an article for a historical encyclopedia, this essay puts a singular emphasis on the qualitative value of vocality, on the body as a medium for the voice, on the inseparability of gesture, poetical voice and singing. Defined by performance in itself, orality appears here as an elementary form of theatricality. Instead of going back to archaic oralization, the author considers modern technical means of reproduction—audio record, magnetic tape, radio, television, film…—along with their “remediation” of orality phenomena. The demand for a strong oral autonomy leads to an analysis of the complex relationships of orality with the world of the written, as well as with an analysis of new forms of media orality

The idea was to create a form of cave or quarry like structure. Working with the natural surroundings the bath rooms lay below a grass roof structure half buried into the hillside. The Therme Vals is built from layer upon layer of locally quarried Valser Quarzite slabs. This stone became the driving inspiration for the design, and is used with great dignity and respect.https://openscholarship.wustl.edu/bcs/1261/thumbnail.jp
