    Attaining Aichi Target 11: How Well Are Marine Ecosystem Services Covered by Protected Areas?

    The spatial coverage of marine and coastal protected areas worldwide has shown a rapid increase in recent years. Over 32% of the world's coral reefs and over 36% of the world's mangrove forests now fall within protected areas. However, simple measures of extent are insufficient for assessing progress toward achieving global targets. Notably, the CBD Aichi Target 11 calls for 'at least 17 per cent of terrestrial and inland water areas, and 10 per cent of coastal and marine areas, especially areas of particular importance for biodiversity and ecosystem services' to be protected. There is, therefore, an urgent need to assess how well protected areas cover these areas of importance for ecosystem services

    Probing behaviors of Sitobion avenae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on enhanced UV-B irradiated plants

    UV-B induced changes in plants can influence sap-feeding insects through mechanisms that have not been studied. Herein the grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), was monitored on barley plants under the treatments of control [0 kJ/ (m2.d)], ambient UV-B [60 kJ/ (m2.d)], and enhanced UV-B [120 kJ/ (m2.d)] irradiation. Electrical penetration graph (EPG) techniques were used to record aphid probing behaviors. Enhanced UV-B irradiated plants negatively affected probing behaviors of S. avenae compared with control plants. In particular, phloem factors that could diminish sieve element acceptance appeared to be involved, as reflected by smaller number of phloem phase, shorter phloem ingestion, and fewer aphids reaching the sustained phloem ingestion phase (E2>10min). On the other hand, factors from leaf surface, epidermis, and mesophyll cannot be excluded, as reflected by higher number of non-probing, longer non-probing and pathway phase, and later the time to first probe

    Social Media Marketing in the Event Industry: An Empirical Study to Determine Factors Influencing the Distribution of Events

    Digitization offers great potential for many areas, including event marketing. Newsletters and social media are already being used successfully by companies to draw attention to their events. Social media marketing can help to increase the reach of events. In this context, it is important to understand which factors influence the intention to interact and interest in event announcements. Using an image manipulation experiment, we examined the influence of four framework conditions on event announcements: Image (present vs. absent), number of persons interested (high vs. low), title length (long vs. short), and relationship information (present vs. absent). The results showed that event announcements with an image elicit significantly higher intention to interact. In addition, interest increases significantly when relationship information is present in the ad (when there is a basic interest in the event). Furthermore, we analyzed the influence of emotionality of event images. We show that emotionality is positively significantly correlated with the intention to interact and interest

    Does governance play a role in the distribution of invasive alien species?

    Invasive alien species (IAS) constitute a major threat to global biological diversity. In order to control their spread, a detailed understanding of the factors influencing their distribution is essential. Although international trade is regarded as a major force structuring spatial patterns of IAS, the role of other social factors remains unclear. Despite studies highlighting the importance of strong governance in slowing drivers of biodiversity loss such as logging, deforestation, and agricultural intensification, no study has yet analyzed its contribution to the issue of IAS. Using estimates of governance quality and comprehensive spatiotemporal IAS data, we performed multiple linear regressions to investigate the effect of governance quality upon the distribution of species listed under "100 of the worst" IAS in 38 Eurasian countries as defined by DASIE. Our model suggested that for countries with higher GDP, stronger governance was associated with a greater number of the worst IAS; in contrast, for the lowest GDP countries under analysis, stronger governance was associated with fewer of these IAS. We elucidate how the quality of governance within a country has implications for trade, tourism, transport, legislation, and economic development, all of which influence the spread of IAS. While our findings support the common assumption that strengthening governance benefits conservation interventions in countries of smaller economy, we find that this effect is not universal. Stronger governance alone cannot adequately address the problem of IAS, and targeted action is required in relatively high-GDP countries in order to stem the influx of IAS associated with high volumes of trade

    The Ghana retention on ART study (ROARS): keeping HIV-positive patients on antiretroviral therapy

The content and views expressed here are the authors’ and do not necessarily reflect the opinion or policy of USAID or the U.S. Government.This report presents the findings of a study that employed qualitative research methods to explore the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Ghana who are either in care and on antiretroviral therapy (ART), or are no longer in care and have been lost to follow-up. The study was designed to deepen our understanding of the challenges ART patients face in continuing on ART in Ghana and to contribute information with the potential to improve retention in care and outcomes for PLHIV in Ghana.This study was carried out by a collaborative team of researchers based at Boston University’s Center for Global and Health and Development (CGHD) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s (KNUST) School of Medical Sciences. The team conducted this research in Kumasi, Ghana’s second largest urban center. It is a component of the ‘Operations Research among Key Populations in Ghana’ project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). We designed and conducted the research in collaboration with the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC).Expanding access to ART among HIV-positive individuals has been a major goal of the Ghana AIDS Commission and Ghana Health Service. Since 2005, Ghana has scaled up ART rapidly; by 2011, 150 health facilities were providing ART to over 60,000 people, an increase from fewer than 5,000 just six years earlier. At the same time, like in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa, ensuring that those who begin ART remain on treatment has proven a major challenge. Previous studies suggest that retention in care for 12 months or longer is approximately 70-80% in Ghana, similar to the rate in many other low-resource settings. While research elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa indicates that a number of barriers affect retention in care, little research on this topic has been conducted in Ghana. Given that ART is currently the only known way to prolong life for PLHIV, it is critical to identify barriers that affect different groups of patients and to find ways to support them in remaining on treatment.This study was motivated by a desire to increase understanding of the challenges of and facilitators to retention in care among individuals on ART in Kumasi, Ghana. We conducted it in collaboration with the Suntreso Government Hospital, one of Kumasi’s largest medical facilities, and specifically with the hospital’s STI (sexually transmitted infection)/HIV clinic, which has experienced high levels of patient dropout from care and treatment. Together with staff at the clinic, we designed this research with the aim of contributing to understanding of the range of barriers PLHIV in Ghana experience trying to stay on treatment, the reasons they default, and the types of supports they believe would help themselves and other patients remain on or return to treatment if they do default.     Development of the Swiss Database for dosing medicinal products in pediatrics

    In daily paediatrics, drugs are commonly used off-label, as they are not approved for children. Approval is lacking because the required clinical studies were limited to adults in the past. Without clinical studies, evidence-based recommendations for drug use in children are limited. Information on off-label drug dosing in children can be found in different handbooks, databases and scientific publications but the dosing recommendations can differ considerably. To improve safety and efficacy of drugs prescribed to children and to assist the prescribers, stakeholders in Swiss paediatrics started a pilot project, supported by the Federal Office of Public Health, with the aim to create a database, providing healthcare professionals with so called “harmonised” dosage recommendations based on the latest available scientific evidence and best clinical practice. A standardised process for dosage harmonisation between paediatric experts was defined, guided and documented in an electronic tool, developed for this purpose. As proof of principle, a total of 102 dosage recommendations for 30 different drugs have been nationally harmonised in the pilot phase considering the current scientific literature and the approval of the most experienced national experts in the field. Conclusion: This approach paved the way for unified national dosage recommendations for children. Reaching the project’s milestones fulfilled the prerequisites for funding and starting regular operation of SwissPedDose in 2018. Since then, the database was extended with recommendations for 100 additional drugs

    Spectroscopic perspective on the interplay between electronic and magnetic properties of magnetically doped topological insulators

    We combine low energy muon spin rotation (LE-μ\muSR) and soft-X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) to study the magnetic and electronic properties of magnetically doped topological insulators, (Bi,Sb)2_2Te3_3. We find that one achieves a full magnetic volume fraction in samples of (V/Cr)x_x(Bi,Sb)2x_{2-x}Te3_3 at doping levels x \gtrsim 0.16. The observed magnetic transition is not sharp in temperature indicating a gradual magnetic ordering. We find that the evolution of magnetic ordering is consistent with formation of ferromagnetic islands which increase in number and/or volume with decreasing temperature. Resonant ARPES at the V L3L_3 edge reveals a nondispersing impurity band close to the Fermi level as well as V weight integrated into the host band structure. Calculations within the coherent potential approximation of the V contribution to the spectral function confirm that this impurity band is caused by V in substitutional sites. The implications of our results on the observation of the quantum anomalous Hall effect at mK temperatures are discussed

    A Highly Overmoded Structure for Hundred-Kilowatt-Class <italic>Ka</italic>-Band Extended Interaction Klystron

    Here, we report on the development of highly overmoded structure for a millimeter-wave (MMW) extended interaction klystron (EIK). To enhance electron beam loading, a new method for designing an oversized beam tunnel in a large cavity by concentrating the axial field is demonstrated. The transmission and oscillation characteristics of the interaction circuit operating in the quasi-TM04 mode are tested by the developed mode conversion circuit. Results suggest that a five-cavity EIK based on this highly overmoded structure can achieve an output power of 289 kW at 32.92 GHz with a saturated gain of 51.6 dB by injecting a 3.3-mm-diameter electron beam with a current of 18 A. The output power exceeds 100 kW at a bandwidth of 100 MHz.</p
