The Interaction in the Macroscopically Ordered Exciton State
The macroscopically ordered exciton state (MOES) - a periodic array of beads
with spatial order on a macroscopic length - appears in the external exciton
rings at low temperatures below a few Kelvin. Here, we report on the
experimental study of the interaction in the MOES. The exciton PL energy varies
in concert with the intensity along the circumference of the ring, with the
largest energy found in the brightest regions. This shows that the MOES is
characterized by the repulsive interaction and is not driven by the attractive
interaction.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

Reassessing balance: News coverage of Donald Trump’s Access Hollywood scandal before and during #metoo
Sexual abuse became an important part of news coverage in the months leading up to Donald Trump’s presidency and continued to dominate news cycles with the emergence of the #metoo movement. Yet, it remains to be seen whether the increasing amount of stories about sexual abuse have actually advanced social justice. We conducted content and textual analyses of newspaper, cable television, and online coverage of the Access Hollywood scandal before and during the #metoo movement (N = 1890) to understand how the journalistic objectivity norm of balance via issue dualism influenced reporting on sexual abuse. Television and right-leaning media had the highest levels of rape myth acceptance in their coverage for both time periods. The use of issue dualism advantaged Trump as Bill Clinton and other prominent accused men shifted focus away from Trump and largely overlooked the women coming forward against Trump. The objectivity norm of balance reduced and politicized this complex issue, as well as gave power to Trump’s retaliation while minimizing the serious accusations that have been brought against him

The leidenfrost phenomenon on structured surfaces
This paper was presented at the 4th Micro and Nano Flows Conference (MNF2014), which was held at University College, London, UK. The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Italian Union of Thermofluiddynamics, IPEM, the Process Intensification Network, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Heat Transfer Society, HEXAG - the Heat Exchange Action Group, and the Energy Institute, ASME Press, LCN London Centre for Nanotechnology, UCL University College London, UCL Engineering, the International NanoScience Community, www.nanopaprika.eu.The lifetime of a droplet released on a hot plate decreases when the temperature of the plate increases. But above some critical value of the temperature, the lifetime suddenly increases. This is due to the formation of a thin layer of vapour between the droplet and the substrate. This layer plays a double role: first it thermally isolates the droplet from the plate and second it allows the droplet to “levitate.” This effect was discovered by Leidenfrost in 1756, but remains an active field of research nowadays, motivated by a wide range of applications. The Leidenfrost point is affected by the roughness or microstructure of the surface. In this work, a silicon surface with different micro-structured regions of square-pillars was prepared such that there is a sharp transition (boundary) between areas of different pillar spacing. The Leidenfrost point was identified in experiments using water drops ranging in average size from 8 μL to 24 μL and the behaviour of the droplets was recorded using a high-speed digital camera. We show that the Leidenfrost point can vary by up to 120 °C for pillar spacings varying from 10 microns to 100 microns. If the drop is placed on the boundary between structured sections, the drop becomes asymmetric. Drop motion may also be observed and some occurrences of drop spinning have been seen. In this paper we present experimental data on Leidenfrost behaviour of drops placed structured surfaces and on the boundary between surfaces with different micro-structures

Consideration of residual stress and geometry during heat treatment to decrease shaft bending
In automotive industry, heat treatment of components is implicitly related to distortion. This phenomenon is particularly obvious in the case of gearbox parts because of their typical geometry and precise requirements. Even if distortion can be anticipated to an extent by experience, it remains complex to comprehend. Scientific literature and industrial experience show that the whole manufacturing process chain has an influence on final heat treatment distortions. This paper presents an approach to estimate the influence of some factors on the distortion, based on the idea of a distortion potential taking into account not only geometry but also the manufacturing process history. Then the idea is developed through experiments on an industrial manufacturing process to understand the impact of residual stress due to machining on shaft bending and teeth distortion during heat treatment. Instead of being measured, residual stress is being neutralized. By comparing lots between each other, connections between gear teeth geometry and manufacturing steps before heat treatment are obtained. As a consequence, geometrical nonconformities roots can be determined more easily thanks to this diagnosis tool, and corrective actions can be applied. Secondly, the influence of product geometry on bending is experimentally considered. Moreover, metallurgical observations enable to explain the influence of workpieces geometry on shaft bending. Thanks to the obtained results, process and product recommendations to decrease shafts bending are proposed
Aproximación a los porqués del bajo nivel lectura de prensa de las mujeres
This study employs a two pronged approach in its attempt to discover newspaper attitudes to gender by addressing both the reading public and the internal policies of newspaper publications. To this end the study analyses how gender issues are addressed, their focus on women, and the type of assignments and rank accorded to women journalists. There have been significant political and social developments regarding gender issues in recent years, including measures to ensure parity and to combat domestic violence, along with a spectacular growth in the number of female university students and women entering professions that were previously regarded as a male preserve. At the same time, newspapers have been suffering financially and struggling to maintain their readership and this has led them to concentrate on the female sector of the market. As a result, a study of local newspapers was carried out to discover how much newspaper content was dedicated to gender issues; how often women feature as the main focus of news in articles and photographs; and how often women are used as a source of information; together with the number of newspaper articles written by women in different sections of the paper, while taking into account the fact that female readership varied considerably according to the different newspapers analysed.
Muscle action potential scans and ultrasound imaging in neurofibromatosis type 2
INTRODUCTION: The neuropathy in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is difficult to quantify and follow up. In this study we compared 3 methods that may help assess motor axon pathology in NF2 patients. METHODS: Nerve conduction studies in median nerves were supplemented by deriving motor unit number estimates (MUNEs) from compound muscle action potential (CMAP) scans and by high-resolution ultrasound (US) peripheral nerve imaging. RESULTS: CMAP amplitudes and nerve conduction velocity were normal in the vast majority of affected individuals, but CMAP scan MUNE revealed denervation and reinnervation in many peripheral nerves. In addition, nerve US imaging enabled monitoring of the size and number of schwannoma-like fascicular enlargements in median nerve trunks. CONCLUSION: In contrast to conventional nerve conduction studies, CMAP scan MUNE in combination with US nerve imaging can quantify the NF2-associated neuropathy and may help to monitor disease progression and drug treatments
