Band structure reconstruction across nematic order in high quality FeSe single crystal as revealed by optical spectroscopy study
We perform an in-plane optical spectroscopy measurement on high quality FeSe
single crystals grown by a vapor transport technique. Below the structural
transition at 90 K, the reflectivity spectrum clearly shows a
gradual suppression around 400 cm and the conductivity spectrum shows a
peak at higher frequency. The energy scale of this gap-like feature is
comparable to the width of the band splitting observed by ARPES. The
low-frequency conductivity consists of two Drude components and the overall
plasma frequency is smaller than that of the FeAs based compounds, suggesting a
lower carrier density or stronger correlation effect. The plasma frequency
becomes even smaller below which agrees with the very small Fermi
energy estimated by other experiments. Similar to iron pnictides, a clear
temperature-induced spectral weight transfer is observed for FeSe, being
indicative of strong correlation effect.Comment: 6 page
Spatial analysis of the effects of PM2.5 on hypertension among the middle-aged and elderly people in China.
Hypertension is currently one of the most common chronic diseases with high global prevalence associated with a huge social and economic burden. In recent years, air pollution has become a focus of research, especially the effects of PM2.5 on hypertension. However, few studies have considered the spatial properties of the sample; thus, the results might be unreliable. Based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and the Environmental Status Bulletin for each province in China, we used the extended shared component model (SCM) to fit the spatial variation of hypertension risk and to reveal the impact of PM2.5 on hypertension in males and females. Our results revealed that the crude prevalence of hypertension for the whole population in China was 32.74% in 2015, with the prevalence in men experiencing slightly higher than that in women (32.92% vs. 32.58%). We found that the distribution of hypertension prevalence exhibited obvious spatial aggregation for the whole population in China (Moran’s I = 0.39, P = 0.001), with similar results in both men (Moran’s I = 0.18, P = 0.027) and women (Moran’s I = 0.52, P = 0.001). Furthermore, the smoothed results obtained using the SCM indicated that some eastern and central provinces had relatively higher hypertension risk, while the risk in southeastern provinces was much lower. The risk was also relatively lower in most western provinces, except for some northwestern regions. Notably, our results showed that PM2.5 was a risk factor for hypertension, and the impact of PM2.5 on women was slightly greater than that on men, with odds ratios (OR) of 1.063 (1.041, 1.086) and 1.048 (1.025, 1.071), respectively. Our findings suggest the existence of distinct spatial differences in the prevalence of hypertension and small sex-related differences in the risk of hypertension in China
The Nematic Energy Scale and the Missing Electron Pocket in FeSe
Superconductivity emerges in proximity to a nematic phase in most iron-based
superconductors. It is therefore important to understand the impact of
nematicity on the electronic structure. Orbital assignment and tracking across
the nematic phase transition prove to be challenging due to the multiband
nature of iron-based superconductors and twinning effects. Here, we report a
detailed study of the electronic structure of fully detwinned FeSe across the
nematic phase transition using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We
clearly observe a nematicity-driven band reconstruction involving dxz, dyz, and
dxy orbitals. The nematic energy scale between dxz and dyz bands reaches a
maximum of 50 meV at the Brillouin zone corner. We are also able to track the
dxz electron pocket across the nematic transition and explain its absence in
the nematic state. Our comprehensive data of the electronic structure provide
an accurate basis for theoretical models of the superconducting pairing in
FeSe
Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data
Application of SCM with Bayesian B-Spline to Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Hypertension in China
Most previous research on the disparities of hypertension risk has neither simultaneously explored the spatio-temporal disparities nor considered the spatial information contained in the samples, thus the estimated results may be unreliable. Our study was based on the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), including residents over 12 years old in seven provinces from 1991 to 2011. Bayesian B-spline was used in the extended shared component model (SCM) for fitting temporal-related variation to explore spatio-temporal distribution in the odds ratio (OR) of hypertension, reveal gender variation, and explore latent risk factors. Our results revealed that the prevalence of hypertension increased from 14.09% in 1991 to 32.37% in 2011, with men experiencing a more obvious change than women. From a spatial perspective, a standardized prevalence ratio (SPR) remaining at a high level was found in Henan and Shandong for both men and women. Meanwhile, before 1997, the temporal distribution of hypertension risk for both men and women remained low. After that, notably since 2004, the OR of hypertension in each province increased to a relatively high level, especially in Northern China. Notably, the OR of hypertension in Shandong and Jiangsu, which was over 1.2, continuously stood out after 2004 for males, while that in Shandong and Guangxi was relatively high for females. The findings suggested that obvious spatial–temporal patterns for hypertension exist in the regions under research and this pattern was quite different between men and women

Efficient Carbon-Based CsPbBr3 Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells by Using Cu-Phthalocyanine as Hole Transport Material
Abstract Metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted extensive research interest for next-generation solution-processed photovoltaic devices because of their high solar-to-electric power conversion efficiency (PCE) and low fabrication cost. Although the world’s best PSC successfully achieves a considerable PCE of over 20% within a very limited timeframe after intensive efforts, the stability, high cost, and up-scaling of PSCs still remain issues. Recently, inorganic perovskite material, CsPbBr3, is emerging as a promising photo-sensitizer with excellent durability and thermal stability, but the efficiency is still embarrassing. In this work, we intend to address these issues by exploiting CsPbBr3 as light absorber, accompanied by using Cu-phthalocyanine (CuPc) as hole transport material (HTM) and carbon as counter electrode. The optimal device acquires a decent PCE of 6.21%, over 60% higher than those of the HTM-free devices. The systematic characterization and analysis reveal a more effective charge transfer process and a suppressed charge recombination in PSCs after introducing CuPc as hole transfer layer. More importantly, our devices exhibit an outstanding durability and a promising thermal stability, making it rather meaningful in future fabrication and application of PSCs
Ultrasonic‐Enabled Nondestructive and Substrate‐Independent Liquid Metal Ink Sintering
Abstract Printing or patterning particle‐based liquid metal (LM) ink is a good strategy to overcome poor wettability of LM for its circuits’ preparation in flexible and printed electronics. Subsequently, a crucial step is to recover conductivity of LM circuits consisting of insulating LM micro/nano‐particles. However, most widely used mechanical sintering methods based on hard contact such as pressing, may not be able to contact the LM patterns' whole surface conformally, leading to insufficient sintering in some areas. Hard contact may also break delicate shapes of the printed patterns. Hereby, an ultrasonic‐assisted sintering strategy that can not only preserve original morphology of the LM circuits but also sinter circuits on various substrates of complex surface topography is proposed. The influencing factors of the ultrasonic sintering are investigated empirically and interpreted with theoretical understanding by simulation. LM circuits encapsulated inside soft elastomer are successfully sintered, proving feasibility in constructing stretchable or flexible electronics. By using water as energy transmission medium, remote sintering without any direct contact with substrate is achieved, which greatly protect LM circuits from mechanical damage. In virtue of such remote and non‐contact manipulation manner, the ultrasonic sintering strategy would greatly advance the fabrication and application scenarios of LM electronics
Aesthetic Cellulose Filaments with Water-Triggered Switchable Internal Stress and Customizable Polarized Iridescence Toward Green Fashion Innovation
Healthy,
convenient, and aesthetic hair dyeing and styling
are
essential to fashion trends and personal–social interactions.
Herein, we fabricate green, scalable, and aesthetic regenerated cellulose
filaments (ACFs) with customizable iridescent colors, outstanding
mechanical properties, and water-triggered moldability for convenient
and fashionable artificial hairdressing. The fabrication of ACFs involves
cellulose dissolution, cross-linking, wet-spinning, and nanostructured
orientation. Notably, the cross-linking strategy endows the ACFs with
significantly weakened internal stress, confirmed by monitoring the
offset of the C–O–C group in the cellulose molecular
chain with Raman imaging, which ensures a tailorable orientation of
the nanostructure during wet stretching and tunable iridescent polarization
colors. Interestingly, ACFs can be tailored for three-dimensional
shaping through a facile water-triggered adjustable internal stress:
temporary shaping with low-level internal stress in the wet state
and permanent shaping with high-level internal stress in the dry state.
The health, convenience, and green aesthetic filaments show great
potential in personal wearables
