Stripe-hexagon competition in forced pattern forming systems with broken up-down symmetry
We investigate the response of two-dimensional pattern forming systems with a
broken up-down symmetry, such as chemical reactions, to spatially resonant
forcing and propose related experiments. The nonlinear behavior immediately
above threshold is analyzed in terms of amplitude equations suggested for a
and ratio between the wavelength of the spatial periodic forcing
and the wavelength of the pattern of the respective system. Both sets of
coupled amplitude equations are derived by a perturbative method from the
Lengyel-Epstein model describing a chemical reaction showing Turing patterns,
which gives us the opportunity to relate the generic response scenarios to a
specific pattern forming system. The nonlinear competition between stripe
patterns and distorted hexagons is explored and their range of existence,
stability and coexistence is determined. Whereas without modulations hexagonal
patterns are always preferred near onset of pattern formation, single mode
solutions (stripes) are favored close to threshold for modulation amplitudes
beyond some critical value. Hence distorted hexagons only occur in a finite
range of the control parameter and their interval of existence shrinks to zero
with increasing values of the modulation amplitude. Furthermore depending on
the modulation amplitude the transition between stripes and distorted hexagons

Magnetic Fields in Dark Cloud Cores: Arecibo OH Zeeman Observations
We have carried out an extensive survey of magnetic field strengths toward
dark cloud cores in order to test models of star formation: ambipolar-diffusion
driven or turbulence driven. The survey involved hours of observing
with the Arecibo telescope in order to make sensitive OH Zeeman observations
toward 34 dark cloud cores. Nine new probable detections were achieved at the
2.5-sigma level; the certainty of the detections varies from solid to marginal,
so we discuss each probable detection separately. However, our analysis
includes all the measurements and does not depend on whether each position has
a detection or just a sensitive measurement. Rather, the analysis establishes
mean (or median) values over the set of observed cores for relevant
astrophysical quantities. The results are that the mass-to-flux ratio is
supercritical by , and that the ratio of turbulent to magnetic energies
is also . These results are compatible with both models of star
formation. However, these OH Zeeman observations do establish for the first
time on a statistically sound basis the energetic importance of magnetic fields
in dark cloud cores at densities of order cm, and they lay
the foundation for further observations that could provide a more definitive

Characterizing flows with an instrumented particle measuring Lagrangian accelerations
We present in this article a novel Lagrangian measurement technique: an
instrumented particle which continuously transmits the force/acceleration
acting on it as it is advected in a flow. We develop signal processing methods
to extract information on the flow from the acceleration signal transmitted by
the particle. Notably, we are able to characterize the force acting on the
particle and to identify the presence of a permanent large-scale vortex
structure. Our technique provides a fast, robust and efficient tool to
characterize flows, and it is particularly suited to obtain Lagrangian
statistics along long trajectories or in cases where optical measurement
techniques are not or hardly applicable.Comment: submitted to New Journal of Physic
Acceptance Modelling in Product Development – Case Study: Connected Systems for Industry 4.0 Solutions
Within Industry 4.0 many connected systems are entering production to optimize the processes. The integration of the manual workstations into a Smart Factory, as a fully connected production, is required as well. Therefore, systems with which the production workers interact as users are introduced. However, as a side-effect, the production employees and their working performance are more transparent as well. This often leads to a lack of user acceptance, even though these systems have positive effects on complete production processes. If, for unforeseen reasons, there is a lack of user acceptance, the introduced system will not be as successful as planned, irrespective of how technically valuable the future product is. Therefore, the potential user acceptance towards the System-in-Development should be understood. This contribution introduces an acceptance model that has been developed and validated within a Live-Lab with industrial participation, as a research environment between laboratory and field studies. For this purpose, influencing factors for user acceptance of connected products were identified. Based on various scientific surveys, the factors were weighted and their interactions analysed in order to enable prognosis regarding user acceptance and to derive recommendations concerning actions for the downstream processes
183 GHz water line variation: An energetic outburst in orion KL
Observations of the 3(13)-2(20) transition of water vapor in the direction of Ori MC1 in 1980 February show a 50% flux increase and an apparent additional red shift of approximately 2 km/s relative to the line observed in 1977 December. From a detailed examination of the amplitude and frequency calibration, it appears unlikely that the effect is due to systematic error. The increase is attributed to the appearance of a new component at a velocity of 12 km/s with respect to the local standard of rest. The new component also has broad wings. Increased emission from a region in the high-velocity core of Ori MC1 can be due either to additional far-IR radiation to pump the 1983 GHz transition or to a change in the physical conditions in the gas. Statistical equilibrium calculations using the large-velocity-gradient formalism were carried out to develop a model for the emission. The calculations support a model in which the gas in the region of enhanced emission is hotter than the dust. The temporal coincidence between the 183 GHZ increase and the 22 GH1 water maser outburst suggests a common, impulsive cause, which has heated the gas in a part of the HV source, enhancing the emission in both transitions
Pressure-Induced Rotational Symmetry Breaking in URuSi
Phase transitions and symmetry are intimately linked. Melting of ice, for
example, restores translation invariance. The mysterious hidden order (HO)
phase of URuSi has, despite relentless research efforts, kept its
symmetry breaking element intangible. Here we present a high-resolution x-ray
diffraction study of the URuSi crystal structure as a function of
hydrostatic pressure. Below a critical pressure threshold kbar,
no tetragonal lattice symmetry breaking is observed even below the HO
transition K. For , however, a pressure-induced rotational
symmetry breaking is identified with an onset temperatures K.
The emergence of an orthorhombic phase is found and discussed in terms of an
electronic nematic order that appears unrelated to the HO, but with possible
relevance for the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic (AF) phase. Existing
theories describe the HO and AF phases through an adiabatic continuity of a
complex order parameter. Since none of these theories predicts a
pressure-induced nematic order, our finding adds an additional symmetry

Nonlinear Dynamics of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Magnetic Waveguide
We have studied the internal and external dynamics of a Bose-Einstein
condensate in an anharmonic magnetic waveguide. An oscillating condensate
experiences a strong coupling between the center of mass motion and the
internal collective modes. Due to the anharmonicity of the magnetic potential,
not only the center of mass motion shows harmonic frequency generation, but
also the internal dynamics exhibit nonlinear frequency mixing. We describe the
data with a theoretical model to high accuracy. For strong excitations we test
the experimental data for indications of a chaotic behavior.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Morphology of obligate ectosymbionts reveals Paralaxus gen. nov.: A new circumtropical genus of marine stilbonematine nematodes
Stilbonematinae are a subfamily of conspicuous marine nematodes, distinguished by a coat of sulphur‐oxidizing bacterial ectosymbionts on their cuticle. As most nematodes, the worm hosts have a relatively simple anatomy and few taxonomically informative characters, and this has resulted in numerous taxonomic reassignments and synonymizations. Recent studies using a combination of morphological and molecular traits have helped to improve the taxonomy of Stilbonematinae but also raised questions on the validity of several genera. Here, we describe a new circumtropically distributed genus Paralaxus (Stilbonematinae) with three species: Paralaxus cocos sp. nov., P. bermudensis sp. nov. and P. columbae sp. nov. We used single worm metagenomes to generate host 18S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) as well as symbiont 16S rRNA gene sequences. Intriguingly, COI alignments and primer matching analyses suggest that the COI is not suitable for PCR‐based barcoding approaches in Stilbonematinae as the genera have a highly diverse base composition and no conserved primer sites. The phylogenetic analyses of all three gene sets, however, confirm the morphological assignments and support the erection of the new genus Paralaxus as well as corroborate the status of the other stilbonematine genera. Paralaxus most closely resembles the stilbonematine genus Laxus in overlapping sets of diagnostic features but can be distinguished from Laxus by the morphology of the genus‐specific symbiont coat. Our re‐analyses of key parameters of the symbiont coat morphology as character for all Stilbonematinae genera show that with amended descriptions, including the coat, highly reliable genus assignments can be obtained
