Optical laser sensing of atmospheric parameter
On the recombination in high-order harmonic generation in molecules
We show that the dependence of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) on the
molecular orientation can be understood within a theoretical treatment that
does not involve the strong field of the laser. The results for H_2 show
excellent agreement with time-dependent strong field calculations for model
molecules, and this motivates a prediction for the orientation dependence of
HHG from the N_2 3s_g valence orbital. For both molecules, we find that the
polarization of recombination photons is influenced by the molecular
orientation. The variations are particularly pronounced for the N_2 valence
orbital, which can be explained by the presence of atomic p-orbitals.Comment: 6 pages 7 figure
The probability distribution of a trapped Brownian particle in plane shear flows
We investigate the statistical properties of an over-damped Brownian particle
that is trapped by a harmonic potential and simultaneously exposed to a linear
shear flow or to a plane Poiseuille flow. Its probability distribution is
determined via the corresponding Smoluchowski equation, which is solved
analytically for a linear shear flow. In the case of a plane Poiseuille flow,
analytical approximations for the distribution are obtained by a perturbation
analysis and they are substantiated by numerical results. There is a good
agreement between the two approaches for a wide range of parameters.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figur
Vibrational States of Glassy and Crystalline Orthotherphenyl
Low-frequency vibrations of glassy and crystalline orthoterphenyl are studied
by means of neutron scattering. Phonon dispersions are measured along the main
axes of a single crystal, and the corresponding longitudinal and transversal
sound velocities are obtained. For glassy and polycrystalline samples, a
density of vibrational states is determined and cross-checked against other
dynamic observables. In the crystal, low-lying zone-boundary modes lead to an
excess over the Debye density of states. In the glass, the boson peak is
located at even lower frequencies. With increasing temperature, both glass and

Evidence for coordinated induction and repression of ecto-5'-nucleotidase (CD73) and the A2a adenosine receptor in a human B cell line
In the human B cell line P493-6 two mitogenic signals, the EpsteinBarr virus nuclear antigen 2 (EBNA2) and myc, can be independently regulated by means of an estrogen receptor fusion construct or an inducible expression vector, respectively. Shut off of EBNA2, either in the presence or absence of myc, leads to a significant increase in enzymatic activity and surface expression of ecto-5nucleotidase (CD73) as well as an increased adenosine receptor response in cyclic AMP formation. Shut off of myc expression has a small additional positive effect on CD73 activity. Among the four different subtypes of adenosine receptors, the A2a receptor exclusively is subject to regulation in this system, which is substantiated by pharmacologic data (specific agonists and inhibitors), as well as on the mRNA level. With upregulated CD73 and A2a, cells also respond to 5AMP with increased cyclic AMP formation. Turn on of EBNA2 has the reverse effect of repression of CD73 and A2a expression. The time course of both induction and repression of CD73 and A2a is rather slow
Microelectromagnets for Trapping and Manipulating Ultracold Atomic Quantum Gases
We describe the production and characterization of microelectromagnets made
for trapping and manipulating atomic ensembles. The devices consist of 7
fabricated parallel copper conductors 3 micrometer thick, 25mm long, with
widths ranging from 3 to 30 micrometer, and are produced by electroplating a
sapphire substrate. Maximum current densities in the wires up to 6.5 * 10^6 A /
cm^2 are achieved in continuous mode operation. The device operates
successfully at a base pressure of 10^-11 mbar. The microstructures permit the
realization of a variety of magnetic field configurations, and hence provide
enormous flexibility for controlling the motion and the shape of Bose-Einstein

Particles held by springs in a linear shear flow exhibit oscillatory motion
The dynamics of small spheres, which are held by linear springs in a low
Reynolds number shear flow at neighboring locations is investigated. The flow
elongates the beads and the interplay of the shear gradient with the nonlinear
behavior of the hydrodynamic interaction among the spheres causes in a large
range of parameters a bifurcation to a surprising oscillatory bead motion. The
parameter ranges, wherein this bifurcation is either super- or subcritical, are
