    A long constraint length VLSI Viterbi decoder for the DSN

    A Viterbi decoder, capable of decoding convolutional codes with constraint lengths up to 15, is under development for the Deep Space Network (DSN). The objective is to complete a prototype of this decoder by late 1990, and demonstrate its performance using the (15, 1/4) encoder in Galileo. The decoder is expected to provide 1 to 2 dB improvement in bit SNR, compared to the present (7, 1/2) code and existing Maximum Likelihood Convolutional Decoder (MCD). The decoder will be fully programmable for any code up to constraint length 15, and code rate 1/2 to 1/6. The decoder architecture and top-level design are described

    Constructive algebraic renormalization of the abelian Higgs-Kibble model

    We propose an algorithm, based on Algebraic Renormalization, that allows the restoration of Slavnov-Taylor invariance at every order of perturbation expansion for an anomaly-free BRS invariant gauge theory. The counterterms are explicitly constructed in terms of a set of one-particle-irreducible Feynman amplitudes evaluated at zero momentum (and derivatives of them). The approach is here discussed in the case of the abelian Higgs-Kibble model, where the zero momentum limit can be safely performed. The normalization conditions are imposed by means of the Slavnov-Taylor invariants and are chosen in order to simplify the calculation of the counterterms. In particular within this model all counterterms involving BRS external sources (anti-fields) can be put to zero with the exception of the fermion sector.Comment: Jul, 1998, 31 page

    Dislocation Emission around Nanoindentations on a (001) fcc Metal Surface Studied by STM and Atomistic Simulations

    We present a combined study by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and atomistic simulations of the emission of dissociated dislocation loops by nanoindentation on a (001) fcc surface. The latter consist of two stacking-fault ribbons bounded by Shockley partials and a stair-rod dislocation. These dissociated loops, which intersect the surface, are shown to originate from loops of interstitial character emitted along the directions and are usually located at hundreds of angstroms away from the indentation point. Simulations reproduce the nucleation and glide of these dislocation loops.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Symmetric nonlinear matched filters (SNMF’s) involve the transformation of the signal spectrum and the filter transfer function through pointwise nonlinearities before they are multiplied in the transform domain. The resulting system is analogous to a 3-layer neural net The experimental and theoretical results discussed indicate that SNMF’s hold considerable potential to achieve high-power of discrimination, resolution and large SNR. The statistical analysis of a particular SNMF in the 2-class problem indicates that the performance coefficient of the SNMF is about four times larger than the performance coefficient of the classical matched filter. In terms of resolving closeby signals, there seems to be no limit to die achievable resolution. However, intermodulation noise has to be carefully monitored

    Impact of smoking and preoperative electrophysiology on outcome after open carpal tunnel release

    Background: The aim was to evaluate the influence of smoking and preoperative electrophysiology on the outcome of open carpal tunnel release. Methods: This retrospective observational study evaluated the outcome in 493 patients (531 hands) primary operated for carpal tunnel syndrome. Data were collected from medical records, health evaluations, and QuickDASH questionnaires before surgery and 1 year after. Results: Smokers had a higher QuickDASH score preoperatively as well as postoperatively, but the change in total score did not differ. The odds of having a postoperative QuickDASH score >10 were 2.5 times higher in smoking patients than in non-smoking patients. In 124/493 patients (25%), no clinically significant improvement was seen. Normal and extreme preoperative electrophysiology values were associated with higher postoperative scores. No correlation was found between preoperative QuickDASH scores and preoperative electrophysiology values. Conclusions: Smokers with carpal tunnel syndrome experience more symptoms preoperatively. Smokers have remaining symptoms after surgery. There is no correlation between preoperative QuickDASH scores and preoperative electrophysiology values. Patients with normal or near to normal preoperative electrophysiology results have limited improvement after surgery

    Outcome after carpal tunnel release : impact of factors related to metabolic syndrome

    Objective: The standard surgical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), with an open carpal tunnel release, is reported to relieve symptoms in most patients. In a retrospective observational study, outcome after open carpal tunnel release was evaluated, focusing on factors related to the metabolic syndrome: diabetes, hypertension, obesity (BMI ≥30) and statin treatment. Methods: Results from 493 out of 962 patients (531/1044 hands) operated for CTS during 18 months that had filled in QuickDASH questionnaires before and 1-year after surgery were included in the study. Results: Patients with diabetes (n = 76) had higher QuickDASH scores pre- (56 [36–77]; i.e. median [interquartile range]) and postoperatively (31 [9–61]) compared to patients without diabetes (48 [32–66]; p 10 (74% vs 61%;

    We model the optical dynamics in linear Frenkel exciton systems governed by scattering on static disorder and lattice vibrations, and calculate the temperature dependent fluorescence spectrum and lifetime. The fluorescence Stokes shift shows a nonmonotonic behavior with temperature, which derives from the interplay of the local band-edge level structure and thermal equilibration.
