Isolation of anaerobic, extremely thermophilic, sulphur metabolising archaebacteria from New Zealand hot springs
Enrichments of New Zealand geo-thermal samples, initiated in anaerobic sulphur-containing media and incubated at temperatures above 85°C, yielded rod and coccal shaped organisms which possessed archaebacterial characteristics. Pure cultures were isolated and characterised. Five of the seven isolates, which were rod-shaped organisms and did not have an obligate requirement for sulphur respiration, were similar to Ther-moproteus sp. but had more neutral pH optima for growth. Three of these five Thermoproteus sp. were obligate heterotrophs, which has not previously been reported. The two coccal isolates had an obligate requirement for sulphur as an electron acceptor and were similar to Desulfurococcus sp. but again with more neutral pH optima for growth
O que é "verdadeiro, mas não esclarecedor" segundo a Ética Eudêmia
In Eudemian Ethics I 6, Aristotle describes the progress
of the ethical investigation as a drift from a) what is true
but not clarifying to b) what is true and clarifying. The drift
from a) to b) is usually interpreted as the overcome of a first obscure
and confused grasp of the subject by a more accurate and
reliable account. In this paper, I claim that the understanding
of the methodological role of a) depends upon its dissociation
from the notions of obscurity and confusion. What is true but
not clarifying should be rather understood as a first indistinct
(but not confused) grasp of the subject. Its insuficiency as regards
explanation is to be accounted on the base of its indistinctness
and not on its supposed obscurity
Significação e não contradição
The so called “elenctic” defense of the principle of non-contradiction in Metaphysics Γ4 will succed if only the opponent will say something. The strategy consists in showing that, in speaking, the opponent has al- ready accepted the principle. Given the structure of the argument, the only way to avoid begging the question is not to ask from the opponent any commitment exceeding the conditions of mere meanigfullness of speech. In particular, it is specially important to avoid any reliance on Aristotelian essentialism. A reading which is in accordance with these requirements will hold that the core of the proof consists in showing that meaning something amounts to singling out a meaning. The mere aim of telling what is within from what is without the bounds imposed on speech of any complexity is enough to show that the speaker accepts the principle of non-contradiction. One is thereby not required to commit oneself to any particular description of reality. Nonetheless, the extention of this result to the conditions of predication will pave the way for the develop- ment of the science of being as being
O "Melhor" no âmbito da ação humana – Ética Eudêmia I 8
What impacts does a teacher implemented feedback system have on behavioral incidents in preschool?
The purpose of this action research project was to examine the relationship between a teacher implemented feedback system and its effects on negative behaviors. This action research project took place within an early childhood classroom. Data was collected to evaluate the effectiveness of using an incentive-based feedback system. Over a three-week period, the number of times praise and reprimand were given in addition to the number of times negative behaviors were observed was recorded. The data showed that with the increase of praise and decrease of reprimand, negative behaviors did in fact decrease in frequency. These findings could increase teachers\u27 willingness to implement a feedback system
TEI Texts that Play Nicely: Lessons from the MONK Project
Text curation, like most human endeavors, requires tools. A technique developed for the MONK Project, schema harvesting, provides a useful platform for facilitating the digital conversion and curation of text corpora. The author describes Abbot, an XSLT-based application that has had success in converting various Text Creation Partnership collections, and others, during and after MONK
