Lost in space: transition and social networks of young people with intellectual disabilities.

Many young people with learning disabilities with complex health and support needs are surviving into adulthood. In the UK policy documents highlight the problems faced by young people with ID at the point of transition to adult life and the barriers faced by youngsters from minority ethnic community communities. School leavers with learning disabilities are often lost within service structures as part of the transition process and young people with ID from minority ethnic communities faced many barriers in access and use of services. Their needs and aspirations during the transition from children to adult services are unknown to many of the service providers which may be attributed to lack of appropriate transition planning process. This results in the lack of real opportunities for young school leavers with learning disabilities to partake in ordinary community and social activities culminating in social exclusion, and creating barriers in accessing services

Analysis and Visualization of Validation Results

Usage of simulation models is an essential part in many modern engineering disci- plines. Computer models of complex physical systems can be used to expedite the design of control systems and reduce the number of physical tests. Model valida- tion tries to answer the question if the model is a good enough representation of the physical system. This thesis describes techniques to visualize multi-dimensional validation results and the search for an automated validation process. The work is focused on a simulation model of the Primary Environmental Control System of Gripen E, but can be applied on validation results from other simulation models. The result from the thesis can be divided into three major components, static validation, dynamic validation and model coverage. To present the results from the static validation different multi-dimensional visualization techniques are in- vestigated and evaluated. The visualizations are compared to each other and to properly depict the static validation status of the model, a combination of visual- izations are required. Two methods for validation of the dynamic performance of the model are examined. The first method uses the singular values of an error model estimated from the residual. We show that the singular values of the error model relay important information about the model’s quality but interpreting the result is a considerable challenge. The second method aims to automate a visual inspection procedure where interesting quantities are automatically computed. Coverage is a descriptor of how much of the applicable operating conditions that has been validated. Two coverage metrics, volumetric coverage and nearest neigh- bour coverage, are examined and the strengths and weaknesses of these metrics are presented. The nearest neighbour coverage metric is further developed to account for validation performance, resulting in a total static validation quantity.

Begeleiders in beeld:Een onderzoek naar de effecten van een training voor begeleiders

Gedragsproblemen zijn een veelvoorkomend verschijnsel in de zorg voor cliënten met een verstandelijke beperking. Naast het gegeven dat mensen met een verstandelijke beperking een grotere kans hebben op het ontwikkelen van gedrags- en psychische problemen, speelt ook de omgeving van deze mensen een rol bij het ontstaan en voortduren van deze problemen. Gedragsproblemen van cliënten hebben invloed op het emotionele welzijn en handelen van begeleiders. De training Begeleiders in Beeld richt zich op emotionele intelligentie en begeleidingsvaardigheden van begeleiders van cliënten met een lichte verstandelijke beperking en gedragsproblemen. In de training wordt onder andere gebruik gemaakt van videofeedback. Deelnemers aan dit onderzoek waren 60 begeleiders die werkten met cliënten met een verstandelijke beperking en gedragsproblemen. Hiervan namen er 34 deel aan een vier maanden durend trainingsprogramma en 26 begeleiders participeerden in een controlegroep. Er is gebruikgemaakt van een pretest-posttest controlegroepdesign. De effectiviteit werd bepaald op grond van de scores op de Bar-On EQ-i.Begeleiders in Beeld is onderdeel van het ZonMw consortium "Coping LVB", een samenwerking tussen VOBC LVG, de Borg, de Universiteit Utrecht en de Universiteit van Tilburg
