    Effects of sulfur dioxide on wine made with sulfitic maceration

    Sulfitic maceration is part of a technique used in large companies to store must through the superdosing of sulfur dioxide added after the destemming of the grapes. The objective of this study was to analyze the physico-chemical characteristics of the wines elaborated by sulfitic maceration. The study was conducted at the Federal University of Pampa (UNIPAMPA), Campus Dom Pedrito, RS, Brazil. Three vinifications (identified by treatments 1, 2 and 3) were performed with 3 replicates each. The grapes used were the cultivar Alicante Bouschet. Treatment 1 underwent the same procedures as treatment 2, except for the dosage of 1400 mg.L−1 of added sulfur dioxide. The grapes were destemmed, crushed and macerated for 2 days and before fermentation started, the must was heated to remove SO2. In the treatment 3 a traditional maceration was carried out for 5 days. The physicochemical characteristics of the wines were analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and the results were analyzed by statistical analysis of comparison of averages. The color intensity of treatment 2 showed no significant difference in relation to the treatment 3, demonstrating that with 2 days of sulphitic maceration, occurs a color extraction similar to a traditional 5-day maceration

    Influence of yeasts of the genus Saccharomyces and not Saccharomyces in elaboration of white wines

    Traditionally the Serra Gaúcha region, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, is known as a barn productor of excellent quality wines. The aromatic complexity of wine in general, and white wine in particular, is what is essential to satisfy an increasingly demanding consumer. Among the most used techniques to achieve this purpose is the addition of yeasts of different genres, thus providing a range of aromatic characteristics that are accentuated in it. In this sense, the objective of this work was to evaluate the use of different strains of yeasts in white wines of Riesling Italic variety, made from grapes grown in the Serra Gaúcha region, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Based on the results, it was possible to observe that there were no significant differences between the treatments in relation to the variables pH, total acidity and alcoholic degree. However, with respect to the fermentation yield, T3 was the treatment that obtained the best performance, reaching the ideal density (below 1000 g.cm3) in the course of 6 to 7 days, followed by treatments T1 (Saccharomyces cerevisae) and T5 (Levulia pulcherrima) (7 to 8 days), with treatments T2 (Saccharomyces cerevisaecerevisae) and T4 (Torulaspora delbrueckii), which had the lowest performance (9 to 10 days). The T4 treatment was also the one that presented a higher amount of residual sugars, which proves the less activity of this yeast in more alcoholic means. All the yeasts used have a low production of volatile acidity, but the lowest concentration was Saccharomyces cerevisae cerevisae, used in treatment T2 (0.1 gL−1), and the other treatments presented higher concentrations (0, 4 to 0.5 gL−1), although it is still within the parameters considered ideal for obtaining quality white wines. T2 was also the treatment with lower concentrations of glycerol (5.1 g.L−1). This compound is mainly formed by glyceropyruvic fermentation through the metabolism of yeasts at the beginning of alcoholic fermentation, usually being produced by the first 50 grams of fermented sugars, which may indicate a greater activity of this yeast in this fermentation period. In general, we can say that all the yeasts used have the potential to produce quality white wines, since they had good fermentation yields, satisfactory production of alcohol and glycerol, and low production of volatile acidity

    THE AFTERCARE SURVEY:Assessment and intervention practices after brain tumour surgery in Europe

    Introduction People with gliomas need specialized neurosurgical, neuro-oncological, psycho-oncological, and neuropsychological care. The role of language and cognitive recovery and rehabilitation in patients’ well-being and resumption of work is crucial, but there are no clear guidelines for the ideal timing and character of assessments and interventions. The goal of the present work was to describe representative (neuro)psychological practices implemented after brain surgery in Europe. Methods An online survey was addressed to professionals working with individuals after brain surgery. We inquired about the assessments and interventions and the involvement of caregivers. Additionally, we asked about recommendations for an ideal assessment and intervention plan. Results Thirty-eight European centres completed the survey. Thirty of them offered at least one post-surgical (neuro)psychological assessment, mainly for language and cognition, especially during the early recovery stage and at long-term. Twenty-eight of the participating centres offered post-surgical therapies. Patients who stand the highest chances of being included in evaluation and therapy post-surgically are those who underwent awake brain surgery, harboured a low-grade glioma, or showed poor recovery. Nearly half of the respondents offer support programs to caregivers, and all teams recommend them. Treatments differed between these offered to individuals with low-grade glioma versus those with high-grade glioma. The figure of caregiver is not yet fully recognized in the recovery phase. Conclusion We stress the need for more complete rehabilitation plans, including the emotional and health-related aspects of recovery. In respondents´ opinions, assessment and rehabilitation plans should also be individually tailored and goal-directed (e.g., professional reinsertion)

    The impact of synchronous liver resection on the risk of anastomotic leakage following elective colorectal resection. A propensity score match analysis on behalf of the iCral study group

    Introduction: how best to manage patients with colorectal cancer and synchronous liver metastasis is still controversial, with specific concerns of increased risk of postoperative complications following combined resection. We aimed at analyzing the influence of combined liver resection on the risk of anastomotic leak (AL) following colorectal resection. Methods: we reviewed the iCral prospectively maintained database to compare the relative risk of AL of patients undergoing colorectal resection for cancer to that of patients receiving simultaneous liver and colorectal resection for cancer with isolated hepatic metastases. The incidence of AL was the primary outcome of the analysis. Perioperative details and postoperative complications were also appraised. Results: out of a total of 996 patients who underwent colorectal resection for cancer, 206 receiving isolated colorectal resection were compared with a matched group of 53 patients undergoing simultaneous liver and colorectal resection. Combined surgery had greater operative time and resulted in longer postoperative hospitalization compared to colorectal resection alone. The proportion of overall morbidity following combined resection was significantly higher than after isolated colorectal resection (56.6% vs. 37.9%, p = 0.021). Overall, the two groups of patients did not differ neither on the rate of major postoperative complications, nor in terms of AL (9.4% vs. 6.3%, p = 0.381). At specific multivariate analysis, the duration of surgery was the only risk factor independently associated with the likelihood of AL. Conclusions: combining hepatic with colorectal resection for the treatment of synchronous liver metastasis from colorectal cancer does not increase significantly the incidence of AL

    Multisensory stimulation for the rehabilitation of unilateral spatial neglect

    Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) is a neuropsychological syndrome, typically caused by lesions of the right hemisphere, whose features are the defective report of events occurring in the left (contralesional) side of space and the inability to orient and set up actions leftwards. Multisensory integration mechanisms, largely spared in USN patients, may temporally modulate spatial orienting. In this pilot study, the effects of an intensive audio-visual Multisensory Stimulation (MS) on USN were assessed, and compared with those of a treatment that ameliorates USN, Prismatic Adaptation (PA). Twenty USN stroke patients received a 2-week treatment (20 sessions, twice per day) of MS or PA. The effects of MS and PA were assessed by a set of neuropsychological clinical tests (target cancellation, line bisection, sentence reading, personal neglect, complex drawing) and the Catherine Bergego Scale for functional disability. Results showed that MS brought about an amelioration of USN deficits overall comparable to that induced by PA; personal neglect was improved only by MS, not by PA. The clinical gains of the MS treatment were not influenced by duration of disease and lesion volume, and they persisted up to one month post-treatment. In conclusion, MS represents a novel and promising rehabilitation procedure for USN

    A Case of Right Temporal Lobectomy for Brain Tumor with Selective Semantic Pictorial Disorder

    Disagreement exists regarding representational and connectionist interpretations of semantic knowledge subserved by the right versus left anterior temporal lobes (ATLs). These interpretations predict a different pattern of impairment in patients with a right unilateral ATL lesion. We conducted a neuropsychological study of a selective semantic pictorial defect exhibited by a 57-year-old man who had undergone a right temporal lobectomy due to the presence of a glioblastoma. The patient was given the Thematic and Taxonomic Semantic task, in which individuals must select, within triplets of words or pictures, the best associates of living or nonliving stimuli, related by thematic or taxonomic links, and presented in the verbal or pictorial modality. The selectivity of the defect was documented by a comparison between the results obtained by our patient and those obtained by healthy controls on living items and on pictures with a thematic relation. The selectivity of the defect was confirmed by a within-subject analysis of the results obtained on all of the task's triplets and those obtained on the stimuli representing living entities with a taxonomic relation. The selectivity of this semantic pictorial defect mainly concerning living entities is consistent with the representational account of semantic defects observed in our patient. In the present case report, a right temporal lobectomy resulted in a selective semantic pictorial defect with the qualitative features predicted by the representational account of semantic defects observed after a unilateral ATL lesion
