Oasis Deluxe
This creative dissertation, submitted for partial fulfillment of requirements for the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing degree, is a novella-length work of fiction set in Las Vegas, Nevada. My aesthetic intent was to construct a contemporary story around an unobtrusive but directive narrative voice that privileges multiple perspectives while uniting them into a coherent whole, and I hope the spirit of that goal is recognizable in the final product; While this work is not cumulative in terns of content, it does represent a narrative and structural sensibility I have developed during my years of study at this institution. In the end, the manuscript\u27s best qualities reflect the influence of numerous friends, mentors and colleagues who have been generous with insights and guidance; its failures are mine alone
Coping with an Uncertain Loss: Aspects of Bereavement in Two Families with an Abducted Child
v, 152 leaves. Advisor: Susan Varhely.The problem. Assuming the form of a clinical case
study, this research project was an exploratory study of the family dynamics operative when a child is abducted by a nonfamily member. The problem of the study was to investigate, compare, and categorize the coping patterns of two families
against the framework of attachment theories as described by John Bowlby.
Procedure. The author conducted a series of structured interviews with two families to explore and assess clinical dynamics of bereavement and coping strategies. The results were categorized against the backdrop of attachment theories
developed by John Bowlby.
Findings. The Bowlby model provided an adequate, if not complete, means of assessment of bereavement processes in the two families. One subject adopted a chronic mourning style while the other demonstrated a pattern that focused on
a continued search for their son and which disallowed conscious grieving. Both subjects were observed to be unfinished in the grief process. The uncertainty of the loss seemed to be the prime factor that prolonged grief in both subjects.
Conclusion. The Bowlby model was acceptable in
defining general grief reactions of the subjects. Each family remained in the grief process for prolonged states which was a taxing problem. Parental commitment to the child remained strong in both cases, however. Although differing in degrees, each subject retained a sense of hope
for the safe recovery of the abducted child.
Recommendations. Recommendations of the study focused on clinical assessment points for professionals involved in bereavement counseling. Unique family, parental, and sibling dynamics were highlighted. Personal awareness issues of the counselor also were discussed. Further research topics included investigating a multi-disciplinary
team approach in solving the problems of childhood abduction and studying grief reactions relevant to various childhood and family life developmental stages
Obliquely propagating electromagnetic waves in magnetized kappa plasmas
Velocity distribution functions (VDFs) that exhibit a power-law dependence on
the high-energy tail have been the subject of intense research by the plasma
physics community. Such functions, known as kappa or superthermal
distributions, have been found to provide a better fitting to the VDFs measured
by spacecraft in the solar wind. One of the problems that is being addressed on
this new light is the temperature anisotropy of solar wind protons and
electrons. In the literature, the general treatment for waves excited by
(bi-)Maxwellian plasmas is well-established. However, for kappa distributions,
the wave characteristics have been studied mostly for the limiting cases of
purely parallel or perpendicular propagation, relative to the ambient magnetic
field. Contributions to the general case of obliquely-propagating
electromagnetic waves have been scarcely reported so far. The absence of a
general treatment prevents a complete analysis of the wave-particle interaction
in kappa plasmas, since some instabilities can operate simultaneously both in
the parallel and oblique directions. In a recent work, Gaelzer and Ziebell [J.
Geophys. Res. 119, 9334 (2014)] obtained expressions for the dielectric tensor
and dispersion relations for the low-frequency, quasi-perpendicular dispersive
Alfv\'en waves resulting from a kappa VDF. In the present work, the formalism
introduced by Ref. 1 is generalized for the general case of electrostatic
and/or electromagnetic waves propagating in a kappa plasma in any frequency
range and for arbitrary angles. An isotropic distribution is considered, but
the methods used here can be easily applied to more general anisotropic
distributions, such as the bi-kappa or product-bi-kappa.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics of Plasmas; added references for

Collisional damping rates for plasma waves
The distinction between the plasma dynamics dominated by collisional
transport versus collective processes has never been rigorously addressed until
recently. A recent paper [Yoon et al., Phys. Rev. E 93, 033203 (2016)]
formulates for the first time, a unified kinetic theory in which collective
processes and collisional dynamics are systematically incorporated from first
principles. One of the outcomes of such a formalism is the rigorous derivation
of collisional damping rates for Langmuir and ion-acoustic waves, which can be
contrasted to the heuristic customary approach. However, the results are given
only in formal mathematical expressions. The present Brief Communication
numerically evaluates the rigorous collisional damping rates by considering the
case of plasma particles with Maxwellian velocity distribution function so as
to assess the consequence of the rigorous formalism in a quantitative manner.
Comparison with the heuristic ("Spitzer") formula shows that the accurate
damping rates are much lower in magnitude than the conventional expression,
which implies that the traditional approach over-estimates the importance of
attenuation of plasma waves by collisional relaxation process. Such a finding
may have a wide applicability ranging from laboratory to space and

Stimulus modality influences session-to-session transfer of training effects in auditory and tactile streaming-based P300 brain–computer interfaces
Despite recent successes, patients suffering from locked-in syndrome (LIS) still struggle to communicate using vision-independent brain–computer interfaces (BCIs). In this study, we compared auditory and tactile BCIs, regarding training effects and cross-stimulus-modality transfer effects, when switching between stimulus modalities. We utilized a streaming-based P300 BCI, which was developed as a low workload approach to prevent potential BCI-inefficiency. We randomly assigned 20 healthy participants to two groups. The participants received three sessions of training either using an auditory BCI or using a tactile BCI. In an additional fourth session, BCI versions were switched to explore possible cross-stimulus-modality transfer effects. Both BCI versions could be operated successfully in the first session by the majority of the participants, with the tactile BCI being experienced as more intuitive. Significant training effects were found mostly in the auditory BCI group and strong evidence for a cross-stimulus-modality transfer occurred for the auditory training group that switched to the tactile version but not vice versa. All participants were able to control at least one BCI version, suggesting that the investigated paradigms are generally feasible and merit further research into their applicability with LIS end-users. Individual preferences regarding stimulus modality should be considered

The oblique firehose instability in a bi-kappa magnetized plasma
In this work, we derive a dispersion equation that describes the excitation
of the oblique (or Alfv\'en) firehose instability in a plasma that contains
both electron and ion species modelled by bi-kappa velocity distribution
functions. The equation is obtained with the assumptions of low-frequency waves
and moderate to large values of the parallel (respective to the ambient
magnetic field) plasma beta parameter, but it is valid for any direction of
propagation and for any value of the particle gyroradius (or Larmor radius).
Considering values for the physical parameters typical to those found in the
solar wind, some solutions of the dispersion equation, corresponding to the
unstable mode, are presented. In order to implement the dispersion solver,
several new mathematical properties of the special functions occurring in a
kappa plasma are derived and included. The results presented here suggest that
the superthermal characteristic of the distribution functions leads to
reductions to both the maximum growth rate of the instability and of the
spectral range of its occurrence
The role of the Cucumber mosaic virus 2b protein in viral movement and symptom induction
The Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) 2b protein is a counter-defense factor and symptom determinant. Conserved domains in the 2b protein sequence were mutated in the 2b gene of strain Fny-CMV. The effects of these mutations were assessed by infection of Nicotiana tabacum, N. benthamiana, and Arabidopsis thaliana (ecotype Col-0) with mutant viruses and by expression of mutant 2b transgenes in A. thaliana. We confirmed that two nuclear localization signals were required for symptom induction and found that the N-terminal domain was essential for symptom induction. The C-terminal domain and two serine residues within a putative phosphorylation domain modulated symptom severity. Further infection studies were conducted using Fny-CMVΔ2b, a mutant that cannot express the 2b protein and that induces no symptoms in N. tabacum, N. benthamiana, or A. thaliana ecotype Col-0. Surprisingly, in plants of A. thaliana ecotype C24, Fny-CMVΔ2b induced severe symptoms similar to those induced by the wild-type virus. However, C24 plants infected with the mutant virus recovered from disease while those infected with the wild-type virus did not. Expression of 2b transgenes from either Fny-CMV or from LS-CMV (a mild strain) in Col-0 plants enhanced systemic movement of Fny-CMVΔ2b and permitted symptom induction by Fny-CMVΔ2b. Taken together, the results indicate that the 2b protein itself is an important symptom determinant in certain hosts. However, they also suggest that the protein may somehow synergize symptom induction by other CMV-encoded factors
Genome sequence of adherent-invasive Escherichia coli and comparative genomic analysis with other E. coli pathotypes
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Adherent and invasive <it>Escherichia coli </it>(AIEC) are commonly found in ileal lesions of Crohn's Disease (CD) patients, where they adhere to intestinal epithelial cells and invade into and survive in epithelial cells and macrophages, thereby gaining access to a typically restricted host niche. Colonization leads to strong inflammatory responses in the gut suggesting that AIEC could play a role in CD immunopathology. Despite extensive investigation, the genetic determinants accounting for the AIEC phenotype remain poorly defined. To address this, we present the complete genome sequence of an AIEC, revealing the genetic blueprint for this disease-associated <it>E. coli </it>pathotype.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We sequenced the complete genome of <it>E. coli </it>NRG857c (O83:H1), a clinical isolate of AIEC from the ileum of a Crohn's Disease patient. Our sequence data confirmed a phylogenetic linkage between AIEC and extraintestinal pathogenic <it>E. coli </it>causing urinary tract infections and neonatal meningitis. The comparison of the NRG857c AIEC genome with other pathogenic and commensal <it>E. coli </it>allowed for the identification of unique genetic features of the AIEC pathotype, including 41 genomic islands, and unique genes that are found only in strains exhibiting the adherent and invasive phenotype.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Up to now, the virulence-like features associated with AIEC are detectable only phenotypically. AIEC genome sequence data will facilitate the identification of genetic determinants implicated in invasion and intracellular growth, as well as enable functional genomic studies of AIEC gene expression during health and disease.</p
