    Analysis of the Transfer Function Model of Tray-Type Binary Distillation Columns with Liquid Hydraulic Delay

    Get PDF
    The companion paper (1) has deduced a transfer function model describing the composition dynamics of tray-type binary distillation columns analytically. It gave consideration to the effect of hydraulic delay and predicted the dynamic behaviour of a more-or-less first order lag nature

    Metamaterials proposed as perfect magnetoelectrics

    Full text link
    Magnetoelectric susceptibility of a metamaterial built from split ring resonators have been investigated both experimentally and within an equivalent circuit model. The absolute values have been shown to exceed by two orders of magnitude that of classical magnetoelectric materials. The metamaterial investigated reaches the theoretically predicted value of the magnetoelectric susceptibility which is equal to the geometric average of the electric and magnetic susceptibilities.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Dispersive Manipulation of Paired Superconducting Qubits

    Full text link
    We combine the ideas of qubit encoding and dispersive dynamics to enable robust and easy quantum information processing (QIP) on paired superconducting charge boxes sharing a common bias lead. We establish a decoherence free subspace on these and introduce universal gates by dispersive interaction with a LC resonator and inductive couplings between the encoded qubits. These gates preserve the code space and only require the established local symmetry and the control of the voltage bias.Comment: 5 pages, incl. 1 figur

    Second Harmonic Generation for a Dilute Suspension of Coated Particles

    Full text link
    We derive an expression for the effective second-harmonic coefficient of a dilute suspension of coated spherical particles. It is assumed that the coating material, but not the core or the host, has a nonlinear susceptibility for second-harmonic generation (SHG). The resulting compact expression shows the various factors affecting the effective SHG coefficient. The effective SHG per unit volume of nonlinear coating material is found to be greatly enhanced at certain frequencies, corresponding to the surface plasmon resonance of the coated particles. Similar expression is also derived for a dilute suspension of coated discs. For coating materials with third-harmonic (THG) coefficient, results for the effective THG coefficients are given for the cases of coated particles and coated discs.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in Phys. Solitary wave solution to the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation for dispersive permittivity and permeability

    Full text link
    We present a solitary wave solution of the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation for dispersive permittivity and permeability using a scaling transformation and coupled amplitude-phase formulation. We have considered the third-order dispersion effect (TOD) into our model and show that soliton shift may be suppressed in a negative index material by a judicious choice of the TOD and self-steepening parameter.Comment: 6 page

    Selective Spin-State Switch and Metal-Insulator Transition in \boldmath GdBaCo2O5.5\rm GdBaCo_2O_{5.5}

    Full text link
    Ultra-high resolution synchrotron diffraction data for GdBaCo2O5.5\rm GdBaCo_2O_{5.5} throw new light on the metal-insulator transition of Co3+^{3+} Ba-cobaltites. An anomalous expansion of CoO6_6 octahedra is observed at the phase transition on heating, while CoO5_5 pyramids show the normal shrinking at the closing of the gap. The insulator-to-metal transition is attributed to a sudden excitation of some electrons in the octahedra (t2g6t_{2g}^6 state) into the Co ege_g band (final t2g4eg2t_{2g}^4e_g^2 state). The t2g5eg1t_{2g}^5e_g^1 state in the pyramids does not change and the structural study also rules out a d3x2−r2/d3y2−r2d_{3x^2-r^2}/d_{3y^2-r^2} orbital ordering at TMIT_{MI}.Comment: Phys. Rev. Dynamics of ions in the selectivity filter of the KcsA channel

    Get PDF
    The statistical and dynamical properties of ions in the selectivity filter of the KcsA ion channel are considered on the basis of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the KcsA protein embedded in a lipid membrane surrounded by an ionic solution. A new approach to the derivation of a Brownian dynamics (BD) model of ion permeation through the filter is discussed, based on unbiased MD simulations. It is shown that depending on additional assumptions, ion’s dynamics can be described either by under-damped Langevin equation with constant damping and white noise or by Langevin equation with a fractional memory kernel. A comparison of the potential of the mean force derived from unbiased MD simulations with the potential produced by the umbrella sampling method demonstrates significant differences in these potentials. The origin of these differences is an open question that requires further clarifications
