Semileptonic decays of meson to S-wave charmonium states in the perturbative QCD approach
Inspired by the recent measurement of the ratio of branching fractions
to and final states at the LHCb
detector, we study the semileptonic decays of meson to the S-wave ground
and radially excited 2S and 3S charmonium states with the perturbative QCD
approach. After evaluating the form factors for the transitions , where and denote pseudoscalar and vector S-wave charmonia,
respectively, we calculate the branching ratios for all these semileptonic
decays. The theoretical uncertainty of hadronic input parameters are reduced by
utilizing the light-cone wave function for meson. It is found that the
predicted branching ratios range from up to and could be
measured by the future LHCb experiment. Our prediction for the ratio of
branching fractions is in good
agreement with the data. For decays, the relative
contributions of the longitudinal and transverse polarization are discussed in
different momentum transfer squared regions. These predictions will be tested
on the ongoing and forthcoming experiments.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 5 table
Current rectification by asymmetric molecules: An ab initio study
We study current rectification effect in an asymmetric molecule
HOOC-CH-(CH) sandwiched between two Aluminum electrodes using
an {\sl ab initio} nonequilibrium Green function method. The conductance of the
system decreases exponentially with the increasing number of CH. The
phenomenon of current rectification is observed such that a very small current
appears at negative bias and a sharp negative differential resistance at a
critical positive bias when . The rectification effect arises from the
asymmetric structure of the molecule and the molecule-electrode couplings. A
significant rectification ratio of 38 can be achieved when .Comment: to appear in J. Chem. Phy
Energy profile and secondary structure impact shRNA efficacy
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>RNA interference (RNAi) is a cellular mechanism in which a short/small double stranded RNA induces the degradation of its sequence specific target mRNA, leading to specific gene silencing. Since its discovery, RNAi has become a powerful biological technique for gene function studies and drug discovery. The very first requirement of applying RNAi is to design functional small interfering RNA (siRNA) that can uniquely induce the degradation of the targeted mRNA. It has been shown that many functional synthetic siRNAs share some common characteristics, such as GC content limitation and free energy preferences at both terminals, etc.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Our three-phase algorithm was developed to design siRNA on a whole-genome scale based on those identified characteristics of functional siRNA. When this algorithm was applied to design short hairpin RNA (shRNA), the validated success rate of shRNAs was over 70%, which was almost double the rate reported for TRC library. This indicates that the designs of siRNA and shRNA may share the same concerns. Further analysis of the shRNA dataset of 444 designs reveals that the high free energy states of the two terminals have the largest positive impact on the shRNA efficacy. Enforcing these energy characteristics of both terminals can further improve the shRNA design success rate to 83.1%. We also found that functional shRNAs have less probability for their 3' terminals to be involved in mRNA secondary structure formation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Functional shRNAs prefer high free energy states at both terminals. High free energy states of the two terminals were found to be the largest positive impact factor on shRNA efficacy. In addition, the accessibility of the 3' terminal is another key factor to shRNA efficacy.</p
Ecological model to predict potential habitats of Oncomelania hupensis, the intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum in the mountainous regions, China
Schistosomiasis japonica is a parasitic disease that remains endemic in seven provinces in the People's Republic of China (P.R. China). One of the most important measures in the process of schistosomiasis elimination in P.R. China is control of Oncomelania hupensis, the unique intermediate host snail of Schistosoma japonicum. Compared with plains/swamp and lake regions, the hilly/mountainous regions of schistosomiasis endemic areas are more complicated, which makes the snail survey difficult to conduct precisely and efficiently. There is a pressing call to identify the snail habitats of mountainous regions in an efficient and cost-effective manner.; Twelve out of 56 administrative villages distributed with O. hupensis in Eryuan, Yunnan Province, were randomly selected to set up the ecological model. Thirty out of the rest of 78 villages (villages selected for building model were excluded from the villages for validation) in Eryuan and 30 out of 89 villages in Midu, Yunnan Province were selected via a chessboard method for model validation, respectively. Nine-year-average Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST) as well as Digital Elevation Model (DEM) covering Eryuan and Midu were extracted from MODIS and ASTER satellite images, respectively. Slope, elevation and the distance from every village to its nearest stream were derived from DEM. Suitable survival environment conditions for snails were defined by comparing historical snail presence data and remote sensing derived images. According to the suitable conditions for snails, environment factors, i.e. NDVI, LST, elevation, slope and the distance from every village to its nearest stream, were integrated into an ecological niche model to predict O. hupensis potential habitats in Eryuan and Midu. The evaluation of the model was assessed by comparing the model prediction and field investigation. Then, the consistency rate of model validation was calculated in Eryuan and Midu Counties, respectively. The final ecological niche model for potential O. hupensis habitats prediction comprised the following environmental factors, namely: NDVI (≥ 0.446), LST (≥ 22.70°C), elevation (≤ 2,300 m), slope (≤ 11°) and the distance to nearest stream (≤ 1,000 m). The potential O. hupensis habitats in Eryuan distributed in the Lancang River basin and O. hupensis in Midu shows a trend of clustering in the north and spotty distribution in the south. The consistency rates of the ecological niche model in Eryuan and Midu were 76.67% and 83.33%, respectively.; The ecological niche model integrated with NDVI, LST, elevation, slope and distance from every village to its nearest stream adequately predicted the snail habitats in the mountainous regions
Heavy-tailed statistics in short-message communication
Short-message (SM) is one of the most frequently used communication channels
in the modern society. In this Brief Report, based on the SM communication
records provided by some volunteers, we investigate the statistics of SM
communication pattern, including the interevent time distributions between two
consecutive short messages and two conversations, and the distribution of
message number contained by a complete conversation. In the individual level,
the current empirical data raises a strong evidence that the human activity
pattern, exhibiting a heavy-tailed interevent time distribution, is driven by a
non-Poisson nature.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures and 1 tabl
