First-Principles Study of Integer Quantum Hall Transitions in Mesoscopic Samples
We perform first principles numerical simulations to investigate resistance
fluctuations in mesoscopic samples, near the transition between consecutive
Quantum Hall plateaus. We use six-terminal geometry and sample sizes similar to
those of real devices. The Hall and longitudinal resistances extracted from the
generalized Landauer formula reproduce all the experimental features uncovered
recently. We then use a simple generalization of the Landauer-B\"uttiker model,
based on the interplay between tunneling and chiral currents -- the co-existing
mechanisms for transport -- to explain the three distinct types of fluctuations
observed, and identify the central region as the critical region.Comment: changes to acknowledgements onl
Scaling of nuclear modification factors for hadrons and light nuclei
The number of constituent quarks (NCQ-) scaling of hadrons and the number of
constituent nucleons (NCN-) scaling of light nuclei are proposed for nuclear
modification factors () of hadrons and light nuclei, respectively,
according to the experimental investigations in relativistic heavy-ion
collisions. Based on coalescence mechanism the scalings are performed for pions
and protons in quark level, and light nuclei and He for
nucleonic level, respectively, formed in Au + Au and Pb + Pb collisions and
nice scaling behaviour emerges. NCQ or NCN scaling law of can be
respectively taken as a probe for quark or nucleon coalescence mechanism for
the formation of hadron or light nuclei in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Equi-energy sampler with applications in statistical inference and statistical mechanics
We introduce a new sampling algorithm, the equi-energy sampler, for efficient
statistical sampling and estimation. Complementary to the widely used
temperature-domain methods, the equi-energy sampler, utilizing the
temperature--energy duality, targets the energy directly. The focus on the
energy function not only facilitates efficient sampling, but also provides a
powerful means for statistical estimation, for example, the calculation of the
density of states and microcanonical averages in statistical mechanics. The
equi-energy sampler is applied to a variety of problems, including exponential
regression in statistics, motif sampling in computational biology and protein
folding in biophysics.Comment: This paper discussed in: [math.ST/0611217], [math.ST/0611219],

A very important process of nucleosynthesis in stars
When some nuclei are free from strong gravitational field, they are unstable and will become stable nuclei by competitions of following processes: (1) neutron-evaporation; (2) spontaneous fission; and (3) beta prime 3-decay. At the initial stage, (1) and (2) are important and (3) can be ignored. The qualitative results are as follows: (1) it seems that nuclei with A 100 come from the spontaneous fission and beta prime decay of neutron-evaporated nuclei with A similiar to 140-440, which can replace the r-process; (2) the super-heavy elements with Z=114--126 (A similiar to 330--360) can be formed. They can be observed in cosmic rage if they have the halftime T 10 to the 7th poweer years; (3) the peak in the rare-earth elements comes from the symmetric fission of super-heavy elements; (4) there are more neutron-rich nuclei in the fragments; and (5) the abundances of a 83 elements in cosmic rays are one order of magnitude higher than that in the solar system
The influence of compact and ordered carbon coating on solid-state behaviors of silicon during electrochemical processes
To address the issues of large volume change and low conductivity of silicon (Si) materials, carbon coatings have been widely employed as surface protection agent and conductive medium to encapsulate the Si materials, which can improve the electrochemical performance of Si-based electrodes. There has been a strong demand to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of efficient carbon coating over the lithiation and delithiation process of Si materials. Here, we report the first observation of the extended two-phase transformation of carbon-coated Si nanoparticles (Si/C) during electrochemical processes. The Si/C nanoparticles were prepared by sintering Si nanoparticles with polyvinylidene chloride precursor. The Si/C electrode underwent a two-phase transition during the first 20 cycles at 0.2 C, but started to engage in solid solution reaction when the ordered compact carbon coating began to crack. Under higher current density conditions, the electrode was also found to be involved in solid solution reaction, which, however, was due to the overwhelming demand of kinetic property rather than the breaking of the carbon coating. In comparison, the Si/C composites prepared with sucrose possessed more disordered and porous carbon structures, and presented solid solution reaction throughout the entire cycling process
Nucleosynthesis in the terrestrial and solar atmospheres
Variations of Delta D, delta C-13, Delta C-14 and Delta O-18 with time were measured by a lot of experiments. Many abnormalities of isotope abundances in cosmic rays were found by balloons and satellites. It is suggested that these abnormalities are related to nuclearsynthesis in the terrestrial and solar atmospheres and are closely related to solar activities
Conditions for Nondistortion Interrogation of Quantum System
Under some physical considerations, we present a universal formulation to
study the possibility of localizing a quantum object in a given region without
disturbing its unknown internal state. When the interaction between the object
and probe wave function takes place only once, we prove the necessary and
sufficient condition that the object's presence can be detected in an initial
state preserving way. Meanwhile, a conditioned optimal interrogation
probability is obtained.Comment: 5 pages, Revtex, 1 figures, Presentation improved, corollary 1 added.
