    A 3-D vector magnetization model with interaction field

    This paper presents a vector model of magnetization based on the three-dimensional (3-D) Stoner-Wohlfarth elemental operator. To account for the magnetic interactions between particles, a phenomenological mean-field approximation is employed. The paper also illustrates the numerical simulation results of the magnetization in 3-D. This model will be useful to simulate the magnetization process of complicated topology flux electromagnetic devices. © 2005 IEEE

    Core Losses in Claw Pole Permanent Magnet Machines with Soft Magnetic Composite Stators

    This paper presents the core loss calculation in soft magnetic composite (SMC) samples and a claw pole permanent magnet machine with SMC stator. By using finite-element analysis of the magnetic field, the total core loss is computed by separating the hysteresis (alternating and rotational, both purely circular and elliptical), eddy current, and anomalous losses in each element when the rotor rotates. The coefficients for each loss component are determined by a loss separation procedure and the experimental data obtained by a single sheet two-dimensional core loss testing system

    Measurement and modeling of core losses of soft magnetic composites under 3-D magnetic excitations in rotating motors

    Soft magnetic composite (SMC) materials are especially suitable for construction of low-cost high-performance motors with three-dimensional (3-D) magnetic fields. The 3-D finite-element analysis (FEA) conducted in the design of a claw pole transverse flux motor (CPTFM) with an SMC core reveals very complicated B (flux density) loci in the core when the motor rotates. In order to understand and account for the effects of the patterns of B loci on motor parameters and performance such as core losses, a 3-D magnetic property testing system was built for magnetic measurement on a cubic SMC sample. 3-D rotational core loss models in SMC materials and rotating motors are developed. © 2005 IEEE

    Improved measurement with 2-D rotating fluxes considering the effect of internal field

    This paper analyzes the effect of the internal field on the measurement with two-dimensional (2-D) rotating fluxes. It is demonstrated that due to the effect of the internal field, the misalignment of H sensing coils, causing the asymmetry of H loci and the discrepancy of the rotational core losses between two opposite rotating directions cannot be corrected completely. A numerical averaging method is employed to eliminate the angular error. Finally, the B and H loci and rotational core losses of a soft magnetic composite (SMC) material were measured under circular rotating magnetic flux density vectors, and the results were corrected by the proposed averaging method. © 2005 IEEE

    Antioxidative potential of polysaccharide fractions produced from traditional Chinese medicinal macrofungus Cordyceps jiangxiensis in vitro

    Cordyceps jiangxiensis, also called ‘CaoMuWang’, is a medicinal entomopathogenic macrofungus native to eastern China. Polysaccharide fractions from cultured C. jiangxiensis exhibited potent antitumor activity via the induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptotic pathway. Antioxidant pathway is also one action of mechanism of antitumor; thus, the antioxidant abilities of these polysaccharide fractions were overall evaluated by five in vitro assays such as the scavenging abilities on DPPH•, hydroxyl and superoxide anion radicals, the reducing power and the chelating ability on ferrous ions. Among these assays, the polysaccharide fractions presented more excellent scavenging abilities on superoxide anion radicals than that of the positive control. When compared with the positive control, the polysaccharide fractions from C. jiangxiensis only had moderate scavenging activities on both DPPH and hydroxyl free radicals, moderate reducing power and ferrous ion chelating activity. The antioxidant abilities of the different polysaccharide fractions had certain differences at all the tested doses and all had a dose-dependent manner. The results suggested that, polysaccharides are  important antioxidant component in the medicinal Cordyceps fungi and have direct and potent antioxidant ability, and that C. jiangxiensis also is a promising potential source for the development of natural antioxidant.Key words: Cordyceps jiangxiensis, polysaccharide, antioxidant activity

    Charactersing a holographic modal phase mask for the detection of ocular aberrations

Available from Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) via the DOI in this record.The accurate measurement of the double-pass ocular wave front has been shown to have a broad range of applications from LASIK surgery to adaptively corrected retinal imaging. The ocular wave front can be accurately described by a small number of Zernike circle polynomials. The modal wave front sensor was first proposed by Neil et al. and allows the coefficients of the individual Zernike modes to be measured directly. Typically the aberrations measured with the modal sensor are smaller than those seen in the ocular wave front. In this work, we investigated a technique for adapting a modal phase mask for the sensing of the ocular wave front. This involved extending the dynamic range of the sensor by increasing the pinhole size to 2.4mm and optimising the mask bias to 0.75λ. This was found to decrease the RMS error by up to a factor of three for eye-like aberrations with amplitudes up to 0.2μm. For aberrations taken from a sample of real-eye measurements a 20% decrease in the RMS error was observed

    Soft magnetic composite (SMC) materials are broadly used in low cost high performance electrical machines due to their magnetic isotropy, low eddy current loss, and capability to mould complex shapes. To optimise the performance of electrical machines, the three-dimensional (3-D) magnetic properties must be well understood and accurately modeled. For this purpose, a 3-D magnetic property measurement system was built and special sensing devices were fabricated. This paper presents, in detail, the magnetic flux density loci and the corresponding magnetic field strength loci for an SMC material when the flux density loci were controlled to be circles lying in the xoy-, yoz-, and zox-plane at 50 Hz. © 2007 - IOS Press and the authors.     Clustering of Multilevel Factors Among Children and Adolescents:Associations With Health-Related Physical Fitness

    BACKGROUND: To identify the clustering characteristics of individual-, family-, and school-level factors, and examine their associations with health-related physical fitness. METHODS: A total of 145,893 Chinese children and adolescents aged 9-18 years participated in this cross-sectional study. The 2-step cluster analysis was conducted to identify clusters among individual-, family-, and school-level factors. Physical fitness indicator was calculated through sex- and age-specific z scores of forced vital capacity, standing long jump, sit-and-reach flexibility, body muscle strength, endurance running, and body mass index. RESULTS: Three, 3, and 5 clusters were automatically identified at individual, family, and school levels, respectively. Students with low physical fitness indicator were more likely to be in the "longest sedentary time and skipping breakfast" cluster (odds ratio [OR] = 1.18; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12-1.24), and "physical inactivity and insufficient protein consumption" cluster (OR = 1.07; 95% CI, 1.02-1.12) at individual level, the "single children and high parental education level" cluster (OR = 1.15; 95% CI, 1.10-1.21), and "no physical activity support and preference" cluster (OR = 1.30; 95% CI, 1.25-1.36) at family level, and the "physical education occupied" cluster (OR = 1.06; 95% CI, 1.01-1.11), and "insufficient physical education frequency" cluster (OR = 1.16; 95% CI, 1.08-1.24) at school level. Girls were more vulnerable to individual- and school-level clusters, while boys were more susceptible to family clusters; the younger students were more sensitive to school clusters, and the older students were more susceptible to family clusters (P-interaction &lt; .05). CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed different clusters at multilevel factors and proved their associations with health-related physical fitness, thus providing new perspective for developing targeted interventions.</p

    A natural product-like JAK2/STAT3 inhibitor induces apoptosis of malignant melanoma cells

    The JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway plays a critical role in tumorigenesis, and has been suggested as a potential molecular target for anti-melanoma therapeutics. However, few JAK2 inhibitors were being tested for melanoma therapy. In this study, eight amentoflavone analogues were evaluated for their activity against human malignant melanoma cells. The most potent analogue, compound 1, inhibited the phosphorylation of JAK2 and STAT3 in human melanoma cells, but had no discernible effect on total JAK2 and STAT3 levels. A cellular thermal shift assay was performed to identify that JAK2 is engaged by 1 in cell lysates. Moreover, compound 1 showed higher antiproliferative activity against human melanoma A375 cells compared to a panel of cancer and normal cell lines. Compound 1 also activated caspase-3 and cleaved PARP, which are markers of apoptosis, and suppressed the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 level. Finally, compound 1 induced apoptosis in 80% of treated melanoma cells. To our knowledge, compound 1 is the first amentoflavone-based JAK2 inhibitor to be investigated for use as an anti-melanoma agent.published_or_final_versio
