    The appearance of macroscopic segregation in ZL205A alloy castings bears a super resemblance to the appearance of shrinkage porosity, and the chemical composition of the segregation is Al2Cu whose microstructure is in the form of dentrite or skeleton crystal. According to the characteristic of nebulous segregation, the formation process could be divided into two steps by the eutectic temperature of Al2Cu. Then a criterion for each of the two steps is brought forward on the basis of the shrinkage porosity criterion of low pressure casting

    Improvement of k-means Clustering Algorithm for Analyzing the Morphology of Ice Ridge Sails

    An improved k-means clustering algorithm is proposed after analyzing the disadvantages of the traditional k-means algorithm. The cluster centers are initialized by combining the sample mean and standard deviation, the optimal cluster centers are searched by the hybridizing particle swarm optimization and traditional k-means algorithm, and the criterion function is improved during the iteration process to search the optimal number of clusters. The theory analysis and experimental results show that the improved algorithm not only avoids the local optima, also has greater searching capability than the traditional algorithm. This improved algorithm is used to analyze the morphology of the ridge sail (the upper surface of ice ridges). The comparison with the measured data shows that the influences of the geographical locations and the growing environments on the formation of ice ridges can be perfectly reflected by the clustered results

    Effect of temperature on the performance of a giant magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer

    The effect of temperature on the performance of a giant magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer (GMUT) was investigated by measuring variations in the resonance frequency and mechanical quality factor of the GMUT at different temperatures. The equivalent circuit model of the GMUT was presented and the total electrical impedance equation was obtained. Curves of the impedance circle were obtained at different temperatures to determine the resonance frequency and mechanical quality factor. To verify the impedance-based results and obtain precise values of the resonance frequency and effective frequency bandwidth, the amplitude-frequency response within the same temperature range was examined experimentally. These results were consistent with those of the impedance analysis, which demonstrates the validity of the equivalent circuit model. Moreover, the resonance frequency and effective bandwidth of the GMUT were found to decrease with increasing temperature, which means that the vibration amplitude is more sensitive to variation in the resonance frequency at high temperature owing, for example, to static or dynamic system loading, changes in the material properties, or drive-signal variability. Accordingly, the temperature in the GMUT should be precisely controlled to improve the stability of vibration

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>This study investigated the effects of Ulinastatin (UTI) and docataxel (Taxotere, TAX) on tumor growth and expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in breast cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>MDA-MB-231 human breast carcinoma cells were cultured in vitro and injected into nude mice to establish breast tumor xenografts in vivo. Cultured cells and mice with tumors were randomly divided into four groups for treatment with TAX, UTI, and TAX+UTI. The effects of these drug treatments on cell proliferation and apoptosis was measured using the MTT assay and the Annexin V/propidium iodide (PI) double-staining method, respectively. IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α expression levels were determined by measuring mRNA transcripts in cultured cells by RT-PCR and cytokine proteins in solid tumors using immunohistochemistry.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>UTI, TAX, and UTI+TAX inhibited the growth of MDA-MB-231 cells in vitro and tumors in vivo. These two drugs, particularly when used in combination, promote tumor cell apoptosis and down-regulate the expression IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α cytokines.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Both UTI and TAX inhibited the growth of MDA-MB-231 breast carcinoma cells. UTI enhanced the inhibitory effect of TAX by a mechanism consistent with the down-regulated expression of IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α.</p
