RouteKG: A knowledge graph-based framework for route prediction on road networks

Short-term route prediction on road networks allows us to anticipate the future trajectories of road users, enabling a plethora of intelligent transportation applications such as dynamic traffic control or personalized route recommendation. Despite recent advances in this area, existing methods focus primarily on learning sequential transition patterns, neglecting the inherent spatial structural relations in road networks that can affect human routing decisions. To fill this gap, this paper introduces RouteKG, a novel Knowledge Graph-based framework for route prediction. Specifically, we construct a Knowledge Graph on the road network, thereby learning and leveraging spatial relations, especially moving directions, which are crucial for human navigation. Moreover, an n-ary tree-based algorithm is introduced to efficiently generate top-K routes in a batch mode, enhancing scalability and computational efficiency. To further optimize the prediction performance, a rank refinement module is incorporated to fine-tune the candidate route rankings. The model performance is evaluated using two real-world vehicle trajectory datasets from two Chinese cities, Chengdu and Shanghai, under various practical scenarios. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in accuracy over baseline methods. We further validate our model through a case study that utilizes the pre-trained model as a simulator for real-time traffic flow estimation at the link level. The proposed RouteKG promises wide-ranging applications in vehicle navigation, traffic management, and other intelligent transportation tasks

Cr(VI) is toxic to the human body and environment. As a suitable wastewater treatment with low energy requirement technology, constructed wetland-microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs) can treat Cr(VI) wastewater while generating electricity. In this study, CW-MFC and constructed wetland systems were developed to purify Cr(VI) wastewater. The removal mechanism of Cr(VI) was examined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that the average pollutant removal efficiency of the CW-MFC system is 2.99–8.13% higher than that of the constructed wetland system, and the maximum power density is 505.61 mW m−2. Moreover, the XPS and EPR analyses demonstrated that Cr in substrates and Leersia hexandra Swartz primarily is in the form of Cr(III). Moreover, in plants and substrates, the Cr(III) content of the CW-MFC system was higher than that of the control, and the bioconcentration and translocation factors were 0.23 and 0.05 higher than those in the control group, respectively. Therefore, the CW-MFC system can efficiently remove Cr(VI) and promote the accumulation and transport of Cr. Microbial community diversity in the CW-MFC was significantly higher than CW. The abundance of electrogenic bacteria Geobacter and metal dissimilatory reducing bacteria Acinetobacter in CW-MFC is higher than that in CW. To summarize, the study results provide a theoretical basis for the mechanism study of Cr(VI) wastewater treatment using CW-MFC systems

Phytoextraction using Celosia argentea Linn. by Mn pretreatment can potentially decontaminate Cd-contaminated soils. However, the mechanism that accelerates the Cd bioaccumulation is still unknown. In order to study the effect and mechanism of Mn pretreatment on Cd bioaccumulation in C. argentea, the hydroponic experiments were set to determine the chlorophyll content, antioxidant enzyme activity, malondialdehyde content, and root exudation of C. argentea. The results indicated that after seven days of Mn pretreatment, both the biomass and Cd concentrations in plants increased compared to the control group. One of the mechanisms for this was the improvement in the physiological resistance of C. argentea following pretreatment with Mn. Compared with Cd stress alone, Mn pretreatment increased photosynthesis and reduced membrane lipid peroxidation. Meanwhile, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were significantly reduced in leaves of C. argentea after Mn pretreatment through the reduction in the production of reactive oxygen species. In addition, Mn promoted the exudation of organic acids in the roots of C. argentea. The contents of citric and malic acids increased by 55.3% and 26.4%, respectively, which may be another important reason for Mn pretreatment increasing Cd bioaccumulation in C. argentea. Therefore, the present work shows that the pretreatment of seedlings with Mn can provide a meaningful strategy to improve the remediation efficiency of Cd-contaminated soils by C. argentea

The Impact of Climate Change on Hydrological Processes of the Glacierized Watershed and Projections

No full text
Under the influence of climate change, the hydrological processes of glaciers have undergone significant changes, a fact which is seriously affecting agricultural production in the downstream region of the Tianshan Mountains, China. In order to explore the intrinsic relationship between climate change and hydrological elements, we proposed an “evaluation-driving-prediction” system to study it. First, we constructed a glacier-enhanced soil and water assessment tool model (GE-SWAT) and used a two-stage calibration method to optimize the model parameters. Next, a scenario analysis was used to evaluate the driving factors of historical runoff changes. Finally, we projected future runoff changes using bias-corrected regional climate model (RCM) outputs. The results of the case study on the Jinghe River Basin in the Tianshan Mountains show that from 1963 to 2016, total runoff increased by 13.3%, 17.7% of which was due to increasing precipitation and 1.8% of which was negated by rising temperatures. The glacier runoff increased by 14.5%, mainly due to the rising temperatures. A 3.4% reduction in snowmelt was caused by a lower snowfall/precipitation ratio, which significantly reduced the snowfall from June to August. The RCM projection indicated that the warming and humidification phenomenon in the study area will continue at least through to the mid-21st century. A consistent increase in glacier runoff and total runoff is projected, but the contribution rate of the glacier runoff will have little to no change under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emission scenarios. Our research demonstrates the simulation performance of the GE-SWAT model in a basin with moderate glacier cover. This method is shown to be efficient in quantifying the impact of climate change on glacier hydrological processes and predicting future streamflow changes, providing a good research reference for similar regions

This study details the preparation of Fe-Mn binary oxide/mulberry stem biochar composite adsorbent (FM-MBC) from mulberry stems via the multiple activation by potassium permanganate, ferrous chloride, triethylenetetramine, and epichlorohydrin. The characteristics of FM-MBC had been characterized by SEM-EDS, BET, FT-IR, XRD, and XPS, and static adsorption batch experiments such as pH, adsorption time, were carried out to study the mechanism of Cr(VI) adsorption on FM-MBC and the impact factors. The results indicated that in contrast with the mulberry stem biochar (MBC), the FM-MBC has more porous on surface with a BET surface area of 74.73 m2/g, and the surface loaded with α-Fe2O3 and amorphization of MnO2 particles. Besides, carboxylic acid, hydroxyl, and carbonyls functional groups were also formed on the FM-MBC surface. At the optimal pH 2.0, the maximum adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) was calculated from the Langmuir model of 28.31, 31.02, and 37.14 mg/g at 25, 35, and 45 °C, respectively. The aromatic groups, carboxyls, and the hydroxyl groups were the mainly functional groups in the adsorption of Cr(VI). The mechanism of the adsorption process of FM-MBC for Cr(VI) mainly involves electrostatic interaction, surface adsorption of Cr(VI) on FM-MBC, and ion exchange

Risk factors for secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in severe coronavirus disease 2019 adult patients

No full text
International audienceBackground: Secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (sHLH) is a life-threatening hyperinflammatory event and a fatal complication of viral infections. Whether sHLH may also be observed in patients with a cytokine storm induced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is still uncertain. We aimed to determine the incidence of sHLH in severe COVID-19 patients and evaluate the underlying risk factors.Method: Four hundred fifteen severe COVID-19 adult patients were retrospectively assessed for hemophagocytosis score (HScore). A subset of 7 patients were unable to be conclusively scored due to insufficient patient data. Results: In 408 patients, 41 (10.04%) had an HScore ≥169 and were characterized as "suspected sHLH positive". Compared with patients below a HScore threshold of 98, the suspected sHLH positive group had higher D-dimer, total bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, triglycerides, ferritin, interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase isoenzyme, troponin, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, while leukocyte, hemoglobin, platelets, lymphocyte, fibrinogen, pre-albumin, albumin levels were significantly lower (all P 1922.58 ng/mL), low platelets (2.28 mmol/L) were independent risk factors for suspected sHLH in COVID-19 patients. Importantly, COVID-19 patients that were suspected sHLH positive had significantly more multi-organ failure. Additionally, a high HScore (>98) was an independent predictor for mortality in COVID-19.Conclusions: HScore should be measured as a prognostic biomarker in COVID-19 patients. In particular, it is important that HScore is assessed in patients with high ferritin, triglycerides and low platelets to improve the detection of suspected sHLH

International audienceBackground: Nirmatrelvir plus ritonavir (Paxlovid) reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by 89% in high-risk, ambulatory adults with COVID-19. We aimed at studying the efficacy and safety of Paxlovid in hospitalized adult patients with SARS-Cov-2 (Omicron BA.2.2 variant) infection and severe comorbidities. Methods: We conducted an open-label, multicenter, randomized controlled trial in which hospitalized adult patients with severe comorbidities were eligible and assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either 300 mg of nirmatrelvir plus 100 mg of ritonavir every 12 h for 5 days with standard treatment or only standard treatment. All-cause mortality on day 28, the duration of SARS-CoV-2 RNA clearance, and safety were evaluated. Findings: 264 patients (mean age, 70.35 years; 122 [46.21%] female) who met the criteria were enrolled at 5 sites in Shanghai from April 10 to May 19 in 2022. After randomization, a total of 132 patients were assigned to receive Paxlovid treatment plus standard treatment, and 132 patients were assigned to receive only standard treatment. The overall 28-day mortality was 4.92%, 8 patients died in the standard treatment group and 5 died in the Paxlovid plus standard treatment group. There was no significant difference in mortality from any cause at 28 days between the Paxlovid plus standard treatment group and the standard treatment group (absolute risk difference [ARD], 2.27; 95% CI −2.94 to 7.49, P = 0.39). There was no significant difference in the duration of SARS-CoV-2 RNA clearance among the two groups (mean days, 10 in Paxlovid plus standard treatment group and 10.50 in the standard treatment group; ARD, −0.62; 95% CI −2.29 to 1.05, P = 0.42). The incidence of adverse events that occurred during the treatment period was similar in the two groups (any adverse event, 10.61% with Paxlovid plus standard treatment vs. 7.58% with the standard, P = 0.39; serious adverse events, 4.55% vs. 3.788%, P = 0.76). Interpretation: Paxlovid showed no significant reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality on day 28 and the duration of SARS–CoV-2 RNA clearance in hospitalized adult COVID-19 patients with severe comorbidities.
