Crop residue management and fertilization effects on soil organic matter and associated biological properties

Returning crop residue may result in nutrient reduction in soil in the first few years. A two-year field experiment was conducted to assess whether this negative effect is alleviated by improved crop residue management (CRM). Nine treatments (3 CRM and 3 N fertilizer rates) were used. The CRM treatments were (1) R0: 100 % of the N using mineral fertilizer with no crop residues return; (2) R: crop residue plus mineral fertilizer as for the R0; and (3) Rc: crop residue plus 83 % of the N using mineral and 17 % manure fertilizer. Each CRM received N fertilizer rates at 270, 360, and 450 kg N ha−1 year−1. At the end of the experiment, soil NO3-N was reduced by 33 % from the R relative to the R0 treatment, while the Rc treatment resulted in a 21 to 44 % increase in occluded particulate organic C and N, and 80 °C extracted dissolved organic N, 19 to 32 % increase in microbial biomass C and protease activity, and higher monounsaturated phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA):saturated PLFA ratio from stimulating growth of indigenous bacteria when compared with the R treatment. Principal component analysis showed that the Biolog and PLFA profiles in the three CRM treatments were different from each other. Overall, these properties were not influenced by the used N fertilizer rates. Our results indicated that application of 17 % of the total N using manure in a field with crop residues return was effective for improving potential plant N availability and labile soil organic matter, primarily due to a shift in the dominant microorganisms

Efficient organic solar cells enabled by simple non-fused electron donors with low synthetic complexity

Abstract Fused‐ring electron donors boost the efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs), but they suffer from high cost and low yield for their large synthetic complexity (SC > 30%). Herein, the authors develop a series of simple non‐fused‐ring electron donors, PF1 and PF2, which alternately consist of furan‐3‐carboxylate and 2,2′‐bithiophene. Note that PF1 and PF2 present very small SC of 9.7% for their inexpensive raw materials, facile synthesis, and high synthetic yield. Compared to their all‐thiophene‐backbone counterpart PT‐E, two new polymers feature larger conjugated plane, resulting in higher hole mobility for them, especially a value up to ≈10 −4 cm 2 V −1 ·s for PF2 with longer alkyl side chain. Meanwhile, PF1 and PF2 exhibit larger dielectric constant and deeper electronic energy level versus PT‐E. Benefiting from the better physicochemical properties, the efficiencies of PF1‐ and PF2‐based devices are improved by ≈16.7% and ≈71.3% relative to that PT‐E‐based devices, respectively. Furthermore, the optimized PF2‐based devices with introducing PC 71 BM as the third component deliver a higher efficiency of 12.40%. The work not only indicates that furan‐3‐carboxylate is a simple yet efficient building block for constructing non‐fused‐ring polymers but also provides a promising electron donor PF2 for the low‐cost production of OSCs.A simple structure non‐fused‐ring electron donor PF2 alternately consisting of furan‐3‐carboxylate and 2,2′‐bithiophene presents very small synthetic complexity of 9.7% as well as low material cost of ≈19.0 $ g −1 . More importantly, PF2 delivers a high efficiency of 12.4% coupled with strong operational stability. imag

Comparison of Bacterial Communities in Two Partial Nitrification Systems for High-ammonia Wastewater and Sewage Treatment

ABSTRACT Partial nitritation is an important part of the biological nitrogen removal processes; it saves half of the aeration energy, since only half of NH 4 + -N need to be oxidized to nitrite. The performance of the process was determined by the microbial community structure. In this study, we measured the microbial diversity in terms of the quantity of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) that were present. The results revealed that the amount of aerobic bacteria did not change significantly in high-ammonia wastewater, but decreased significantly with running time in sewage. The abundance of AOB and NOB in high-ammonia wastewater ranged from 1.23 × 10 7 to 8.95 × 10

The prognostic value of high expression of FKBP1A in gastric cancer and the regulatory effect of targeted PI3K/AKT on glucose metabolism

Background and purpose: Gastric cancer is one of the common gastrointestinal malignancies. FKBP1A has been reported to be involved in the occurrence and development of various tumors, but the biological role and mechanism of it in gastric cancer remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the expression level and prognostic value of FKBP1A in gastric cancer tissues, and to analyze the possible pathways and mechanisms of its regulation of gastric cancer progression. Methods: The expression of FKBP1A in gastric cancer was observed by immunohistochemistry, and its correlation with poor prognosis was analyzed by combining bioinformatics and clinicopathological parameters. Kaplan-Meier survival curve was used to analyze the effect of FKBP1A on the 5-year survival rate of patients with gastric cancer after surgery, and COX multivariate regression analysis was used to explore the independent prognostic factors affecting the 5-year survival rate of patients with gastric cancer after surgery. The diagnostic value of FKBP1A expression in patients with gastric cancer was analyzed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) were used to enrich and analyze the biological function of FKBP1A and the possible signal pathways involved. We constructed the MGC803 cell model transfected with lentivirus in vitro, explored the influence of FKBP1A on the glucose metabolism and malignant biological behavior of MGC803 cells, and the possible molecular mechanism involved, and established a nude mouse transplantation tumor model in vitro to verify it. Results: Immunohistochemical results showed that FKBP1A was highly expressed in gastric cancer (P<0.01), and bioinformatics and clinical parameter analysis showed that FKBP1A was associated with poor prognosis. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and COX regression analysis showed that the expression level of FKBP1A was negatively correlated with 5-year survival. And carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)≥5 μg/L, carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9≥37 kU/L, T stage (T3-T4) and N stage (N2-N3) were independent prognostic factors affecting the 5-year survival rate of gastric cancer patients after surgery (P<0.05). ROC analysis showed that high expression of FKBP1A had good prognostic value (P<0.01). Enrichment of GO and KEGG suggested that FKBP1A was involved in regulating glucose metabolism in gastric cancer cells. In vitro experiments showed that overexpression of FKBP1A promoted glucose metabolism and proliferation, invasion and migration of MGC803 cells, while silencing of FKBP1A did the opposite (P<0.05). In vivo experiments showed that overexpression of FKBP1A in gastric cancer cells promoted the growth of transplanted tumor in nude mice, while silencing FKBP1A inhibited it (P<0.05). Mechanism analysis showed that overexpression of FKBP1A upregulated the expressions of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and protein kinase B (AKT) in gastric cancer cells, while silencing FKBP1A downregulated the expressions (P<0.05). Conclusion: FKBP1A is highly expressed in gastric cancer tissues, and is associated with poor prognosis, which may be due to the promotion of glucose metabolism and malignant biological behavior of gastric cancer cells by activating PI3K/AKT
