A Linear Network Coding Approach for Uplink Distributed MIMO Systems: Protocol and Outage Behavior

Β© 1983-2012 IEEE. A distributed multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system consists of M users served by L distributed base stations (BSs) , where the BSs are connected to a central unit (CU) via L independent backhaul (BH) links. In this paper, we consider the design of an uplink distributed MIMO system where 1) the channel state information is not available at the transmitters and 2) the BH links are rate constrained. We propose a new linear network coding (LNC)-based protocol: the M users transmit simultaneously. Each BS generates N linear functions of the M users' messages, based on a preassigned LNC coefficient matrix. The CU collects N Β·L linear functions from the L BSs and recovers all M users' messages by solving these linear functions. The decoding becomes successful if the linear functions has full rank M and fails if the linear functions are rank deficient. We derive the preassigned LNC coefficient matrix that minimizes the probability of rank deficiency. We then analyze the outage probability (OP) of the proposed scheme over a Rayleigh fading channel. We analytically show that as long as the BH rate is greater than the individual data rate of one user, the OP of the proposed scheme decays like 1/SNRL at high SNR. This is in contrast to the existing scheme whose OP decays like 1/SNRL. As the BH rate constraint approaches M times the data rate of one user, the performance of the proposed scheme is 10/L log10 (L!) dB away from that of the full MIMO scenario at high SNR. We also develop a structured way to efficiently construct the preassigned LNC coefficient matrix that yields the optimized OP performance. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme has significantly improved performance over existing schemes

Optimal harvest-use-store design for delay-constrained energy harvesting wireless communications

Recent advances in energy harvesting (EH) technology have motivated the adoption of rechargeable mobile devices for communications. In this paper, we consider a point-to-point (P2P) wireless communication system in which an EH transmitter with a non-ideal rechargeable battery is required to send a given fixed number of bits to the receiver before they expire according to a preset delay constraint. Due to the possible energy loss in the storage process, the harvest-use-and-store (HUS) architecture is adopted. We characterize the properties of the optimal solutions, for additive white Gaussian channels (AWGNs) and then block-fading channels, that maximize the energy efficiency (i.e., battery residual) subject to a given rate requirement. Interestingly, it is shown that the optimal solution has a water-filling interpretation with double thresholds and that both thresholds are monotonic. Based on this, we investigate the optimal double-threshold based allocation policy and devise an algorithm to achieve the solution. Numerical results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis and to compare the optimal solutions with existing schemes

Unsupervised Learning of Category-Specific Symmetric 3D Keypoints from Point Sets

Automatic discovery of category-specific 3D keypoints from a collection of objects of a category is a challenging problem. The difficulty is added when objects are represented by 3D point clouds, with variations in shape and semantic parts and unknown coordinate frames. We define keypoints to be category-specific, if they meaningfully represent objects’ shape and their correspondences can be simply established order-wise across all objects. This paper aims at learning such 3D keypoints, in an unsupervised manner, using a collection of misaligned 3D point clouds of objects from an unknown category. In order to do so, we model shapes defined by the keypoints, within a category, using the symmetric linear basis shapes without assuming the plane of symmetry to be known. The usage of symmetry prior leads us to learn stable keypoints suitable for higher misalignments. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on learning such keypoints directly from 3D point clouds for a general category. Using objects from four benchmark datasets, we demonstrate the quality of our learned keypoints by quantitative and qualitative evaluations. Our experiments also show that the keypoints discovered by our method are geometrically and semantically consistent

Transcriptome Profiling of Human Pre-Implantation Development

BACKGROUND: Preimplantation development is a crucial step in early human development. However, the molecular basis of human preimplantation development is not well known. METHODOLOGY: By applying microarray on 397 human oocytes and embryos at six developmental stages, we studied the transcription dynamics during human preimplantation development. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We found that the preimplantation development consisted of two main transitions: from metaphase-II oocyte to 4-cell embryo where mainly the maternal genes were expressed, and from 8-cell embryo to blastocyst with down-regulation of the maternal genes and up-regulation of embryonic genes. Human preimplantation development proved relatively autonomous. Genes predominantly expressed in oocytes and embryos are well conserved during evolution. SIGNIFICANCE: Our database and findings provide fundamental resources for understandin

Host Cell Invasion and Virulence Mediated by Candida albicans Ssa1

Candida albicans Ssa1 and Ssa2 are members of the HSP70 family of heat shock proteins that are expressed on the cell surface and function as receptors for antimicrobial peptides such as histatins. We investigated the role of Ssa1 and Ssa2 in mediating pathogenic host cell interactions and virulence. A C. albicans ssa1Ξ”/Ξ” mutant had attenuated virulence in murine models of disseminated and oropharyngeal candidiasis, whereas an ssa2Ξ”/Ξ” mutant did not. In vitro studies revealed that the ssa1Ξ”/Ξ” mutant caused markedly less damage to endothelial cells and oral epithelial cell lines. Also, the ssa1Ξ”/Ξ” mutant had defective binding to endothelial cell N-cadherin and epithelial cell E-cadherin, receptors that mediate host cell endocytosis of C. albicans. As a result, this mutant had impaired capacity to induce its own endocytosis by endothelial cells and oral epithelial cells. Latex beads coated with recombinant Ssa1 were avidly endocytosed by both endothelial cells and oral epithelial cells, demonstrating that Ssa1 is sufficient to induce host cell endocytosis. These results indicate that Ssa1 is a novel invasin that binds to host cell cadherins, induces host cell endocytosis, and is critical for C. albicans to cause maximal damage to host cells and induce disseminated and oropharyngeal disease
