    Efficiency, economics, and environmental implications of phosphorus resource use and the fertilizer industry in China

    Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for crop production and is often in short supply. The necessary P fertilizers are derived from deposits in the lithosphere, which are limited in size and nonrenewable. China is one of the world's largest consumers and producers of P fertilizers. Thus, P resource use efficiency in China has an important impact on the worldwide efficiency of P resource use. This study examined the P fertilizer industry in China in terms of P resource use efficiency, economics, and environmental risk, and explored options for improvement through scenario analysis. P resource use efficiency decreased from a mean of 71% before 1995 to 39% in 2003, i.e., from every 10 kg P in rock material, only 3.9 kg P was used to produce fertilizer, 5.6 kg of the residues were discarded at the mining site, and 0.5 kg was manufacturing waste. The decreased efficiency was caused by increased P rock mining activities, especially from small, inefficient miners. Enhanced mining was supported by local governments and by the growing P fertilizer industry, where high-analysis P fertilizers have fourfold higher gross margins than traditional low-analysis fertilizers. Although the growing fertilizer industry is contributing significantly to the development of some regions, the economic efficiency is still lower than in other countries, e.g., in the USA. The P resource is depleting quickly, and the environmental consequences of inefficient use are serious. The amount of accumulated phosphor gypsum was estimated to be 110 Tg, the amount of deteriorated land reached 475 km(2), and the consumption of ground water was 1.8 billion m(3) per year. The low efficiency and serious environmental risk could be attributed to the numerous small inefficient miners, which were supported by intervention of governmental subsidies and taxes after 1995. This study proved that there is a great deal of room for improvement in the resource use efficiency up to 77% by integrated measures, which need broad cooperation of miners, fertilizer plants, and agriculture

    Recent developments in planet migration theory

    Planetary migration is the process by which a forming planet undergoes a drift of its semi-major axis caused by the tidal interaction with its parent protoplanetary disc. One of the key quantities to assess the migration of embedded planets is the tidal torque between the disc and planet, which has two components: the Lindblad torque and the corotation torque. We review the latest results on both torque components for planets on circular orbits, with a special emphasis on the various processes that give rise to additional, large components of the corotation torque, and those contributing to the saturation of this torque. These additional components of the corotation torque could help address the shortcomings that have recently been exposed by models of planet population syntheses. We also review recent results concerning the migration of giant planets that carve gaps in the disc (type II migration) and the migration of sub-giant planets that open partial gaps in massive discs (type III migration).Comment: 52 pages, 18 figures.     Analysis of the Y(4140) and related molecular states with QCD sum rules

    In this article, we assume that there exist scalar D∗Dˉ∗{D}^\ast {\bar {D}}^\ast, Ds∗Dˉs∗{D}_s^\ast {\bar {D}}_s^\ast, B∗Bˉ∗{B}^\ast {\bar {B}}^\ast and Bs∗Bˉs∗{B}_s^\ast {\bar {B}}_s^\ast molecular states, and study their masses using the QCD sum rules. The numerical results indicate that the masses are about (250−500)MeV(250-500) \rm{MeV} above the corresponding D∗−Dˉ∗{D}^\ast -{\bar {D}}^\ast, Ds∗−Dˉs∗{D}_s^\ast -{\bar {D}}_s^\ast, B∗−Bˉ∗{B}^\ast -{\bar {B}}^\ast and Bs∗−Bˉs∗{B}_s^\ast -{\bar {B}}_s^\ast thresholds, the Y(4140) is unlikely a scalar Ds∗Dˉs∗{D}_s^\ast {\bar {D}}_s^\ast molecular state. The scalar D∗Dˉ∗D^\ast {\bar D}^\ast, Ds∗Dˉs∗D_s^\ast {\bar D}_s^\ast, B∗Bˉ∗B^\ast {\bar B}^\ast and Bs∗Bˉs∗B_s^\ast {\bar B}_s^\ast molecular states maybe not exist, while the scalar D′∗D′ˉ∗{D'}^\ast {\bar {D'}}^\ast, D′s∗D′ˉs∗{D'}_s^\ast {\bar {D'}}_s^\ast, B′∗B′ˉ∗{B'}^\ast {\bar {B'}}^\ast and B′s∗B′ˉs∗{B'}_s^\ast {\bar {B'}}_s^\ast molecular states maybe exist.Comment: 19 pages, 36 figures, slight revisio

    Constraints on coupling constant between dark energy and dark matter

    We have investigated constraints on the coupling between dark matter and the interacting Chaplygin gas. Our results indicate that the coupling constant cc between these two entities can take arbitrary values, which can be either positive or negative, thus giving arbitrary freedom to the inter-conversion between Chaplygin gas and dark matter. Thus our results indicate that the restriction 0<c<10<c<1 on the coupling constant occurs as a very special case. Our analysis also supports the existence of phantom energy under certain conditions on the coupling constant.Comment: 16 Pages, 3 figure

    Energy band structure and intrinsic coherent properties in two weakly linked Bose Einstein Condensates

    The energy band structure and energy splitting due to quantum tunneling in two weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates were calculated by using the instanton method. The intrinsic coherent properties of Bose Josephson junction were investigated in terms of energy splitting. For EC/EJ≪1E_{C}/E_{J}\ll 1, the energy splitting is small and the system is globally phase coherent. In the opposite limit, EC/EJ≫1E_{C}/E_{J}\gg 1, the energy splitting is large and the system becomes a phase dissipation. Our reslults suggest that one should investigate the coherence phenomna of BJJ in proper condition such as EC/EJ∼1E_{C}/E_{J}\sim 1.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev. A, 2 figure
