Control of a Single-Star Flying Capacitor Converter Modular Multi-level Cascaded Converter (SSFCC-MMCC) STATCOM for Unbalanced Load Compensation

    Get PDF
This paper presents a simulation study into the implementation of the single star flying capacitor converter modular multi-level cascaded converter (SSFCC-MMCC) as a STATCOM for unbalanced load compensation. The paper proposes a new concept of voltage source current control for the reference current tracking of the compensated currents. This control strategy enables the STATCOM system to compensate for both positive sequence reactive and negative sequence currents. Not only compensates for unbalanced load, but also keep the module Dc-link and flying capacitor voltages maintained at their rated values. Simulation results verify the performance of the chosen topology

Reactive power compensation by modular multilevel flying capacitor converter-based STATCOM using PS-PWM

This paper presents a simulation study into the implementation of a modular multi-level flying capacitor converter as a STATCOM. The converter modulation scheme applied is based on Phase Shifted PWM and the two scenarios which require compensation are investigated to verify this topology. The two scenarios are PCC voltage regulation through reactive power compensation and power oscillation damping through reactive current compensation. Simulation results verify the performance of the chosen topology

Grid Voltage Synchronization for Unbalanced Voltages Using the Energy Operator

    Get PDF
This paper presents a novel synchronization technique which can identify the grid voltage frequency and phase angle under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. The method combines the features of two different energy operator schemes: the basic one for estimating the frequency of the grid voltages and the cross-energy operator for phase tracking. Using a moving data window of five samples the algorithm can track the fundamental frequency and phase angle quickly and accurately. The paper discusses the fundamental principles of the method, highlights its features and filter requirements in implementation. An experimental implementation of this method is presented which validates its performance for practical operation. The ability of the proposed method to enable a STATCOM riding-through unbalanced grid voltage condition is verified by the results from a power network simulation study

A Novel Phase locked Loop Scheme for Grid Voltage Synchronisation Using the Energy Operator

    Get PDF
A well-known issue with existing power systems is rapid and accurate synchronisation to grid voltages when the system is unbalanced under grid fault conditions and corrupted with harmonics. This paper presents a novel phase locked loop technique for grid synchronisation technique using the energy operator. A comparative study is undertaken to investigate the accuracy and robustness of this technique compared to existing grid synchronisation techniques

Personality traits, intra-household allocation and the gender wage gap

    Get PDF
© 2017 Elsevier B.V. A model of how personality traits affect household time and resource allocation decisions and wages is developed and estimated. In the model, households choose between two behavioral modes: cooperative or noncooperative. Spouses receive wage offers and allocate time to supplying labor market hours and to producing a public good. Personality traits, measured by the so-called Big Five traits, can affect household bargaining weights and wage offers. Model parameters are estimated by Simulated Method of Moments using the Household Income and Labor Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) data. Personality traits are found to be important determinants of household bargaining weights and of wage offers and to have substantial implications for understanding the sources of gender wage disparities
