    Inspiring Music for All: next steps in innovation, improvement and integration

    The report, funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, provides an overview of schools-based music education in England. It represents the outcomes of research undertaken in January and February 2014 which included detailed literature reviews, personal interviews with thirty-five specialists involved in leading various organisations responsible for different aspects of music education, focus group discussions and an on-line survey of the music education workforce that generated 515 responses. The findings suggest that the place and status of music in schools vary widely across the country. The best music in schools is significantly more inclusive, more musically diverse and better quality that it was a decade ago. However, the quality and reach of schools-based music education is still unacceptably variable and inconsistent at both primary and secondary levels.     This chapter offers insights on the challenges and possibilities surrounding how research has and can influence policy action. The chapter addresses policy gaps as well as the non-linear relationship between policy and policy trajectory and research. It also presents the challenges one might encounter when considering evidence-based policy in the field of music education. Policy window issues and policy sustainability are also addressed and include examples of practices in the UK, Ireland, and Brazil. The chapter highlights the significance of understanding the role of informed practice and its interaction with policy substance and context, particularly when the interest is development of music projects and their sustainability

    The Policy and Practice of Music Education in England, 2010-2020

    Since the introduction of the National Plan for Music Education there have been significant changes in music education within England. Whilst some celebrate figures that report increased access and engagement, many teachers and others continue to have legitimate concerns regarding the quality of the music education on offer in schools and Music Education Hubs. There are concerns that the provision of music education is incoherent and patchy across the country. Many would argue that the opportunity to access high‐quality music education has become a ‘postcode lottery’. There is a sense that the fragmentation of music education as a result of curriculum reforms and the diversity of approaches taken by Music Education Hubs and other bodies has significantly enhanced this incoherence. This article seeks to review the policy and practice of music education in England over the last 10 years. It draws on recent research from various sources and maintains a particular focus on government policy and the consequences of this for the field as a whole. It reflects on how things could be improved in the future. It argues for a clearer focus on a practitioner‐led approach to research and advocacy, in particular one led by the notion of ‘policy as practice’ rather than continuing with the current approach and its intrinsic failings

    Menopause and the influence of culture: another gap for Indigenous Australian women?

    Background: There is great variation in experience of menopause in women around the world. The purpose of this study was to review current understanding of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) women’s experiences of menopause. The literature pertaining to the perception, significance and experience of menopause from a number of cultural groups around the world has been included to provide context for why Indigenous women’s experience might be important for their health and differ from that reported in other studies of Australian women and menopause. Methods: A search of databases including Ovid Medline, Pubmed, Web of Science, AUSThealth, AMED, EMBASE, Global Health and PsychINFO was undertaken from January 2011 to April 2011 using the search terms menopause, Indigenous, Aboriginal, attitudes, and perceptions and repeated in September 2012. Results: Considerable research shows significant variation across cultures in the menopausal experience. Biological, psychological, social and cultural factors are associated with either positive or negative attitudes, perceptions or experiences of menopause in various cultures. Comparative international literature shows that neither biological nor social factors alone are sufficient to explain the variation in experiences of the menopausal transition. However, a strong influence of culture on the menopause experience can be found. The variation in women’s experience of menopause indicates that different cultural groups of women may have different understandings and needs during the menopausal transition. While considerable literature exists for Australian women as a whole, there has been little investigation of Australian Indigenous women, with only two research studies related to Indigenous women’s experiences of menopause identified.Conclusions: Differences in biocultural experience of menopause around the world suggest the importance of biocultural research. For the Indigenous women of Australia, the relative contribution of culture, social disadvantage and poor general health compared with non-Indigenous women to the experience of menopause is unknown. As such, further research and understanding of the experience of Indigenous women around Australia is needed. This information could assist individuals, families, cultural groups and healthcare providers to enhance management and support for Indigenous Australian women

    Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (eCPR) may be considered as a rescue attempt for highly selected patients with refractory cardiac arrest and potentially reversible aetiology. Currently, there are no randomised, controlled studies on eCPR, and valid predictors of benefit and outcome are lacking, which might guide indication of eCPR. Currently, selection criteria and procedures differ across hospitals and standardised algorithms are lacking. Based on expert opinion the present consensus statement provides a first standardised treatment algorithm for eCPR
