Measurement phase transitions in the no-click limit as quantum phase transitions of a non-hermitean vacuum

We study dynamical phase transitions occurring in the stationary state of the dynamics of integrable many-body non-hermitian Hamiltonians, which can be either realized as a no-click limit of a stochastic Schr\"{o}dinger equation or using spacetime duality of quantum circuits. In two specific models, the Transverse Field Ising Chain and the Long Range Kitaev Chain, we observe that the entanglement phase transitions occurring in the stationary state have the same nature as that occurring in the vacuum of the non-hermitian Hamiltonian: bounded entanglement entropy when the imaginary part of the quasi-particle spectrum is gapped and a logarithmic growth for gapless imaginary spectrum. This observation suggests the possibility to generalize the area-law theorem to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians.Comment: v1:23 pages, 9 figures; v2: Unchanged results. The aim of the currrent investigation was to evaluate (a) the toxicity of three pyrethroids (deltamethrin, lambdacyhalothrin, and tetramethrin); (b) the effect of these insecticides on the locomotor activity; and (c) the repellent effect of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) on two deltamethrin-resistant strains of Triatoma infestans, from Argentina (El Chorro and La Toma), and one susceptible strain. The resistance ratios (RRs) obtained for the La Toma strain were: > 10,769,50,7, and > 5,2 for deltamethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, and tetramethrin respectively. The RRs for the El Chorro strain were: > 10,769, 85.8, and > 5.2 for deltamethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, and tetramethrin respectively. The hyperactivity usually caused by the three pyrethroids was in both the deltamethrin-resistant strains compared to the susceptible reference strain. No differences were observed in the repellent effect of DEET between the three groups. These results indicate that the deltamethrin-resistant insects have a cross resistance to lambda-cyhalothrin and tetramethrin, and are also resistant to the first symptom of pyrethroid poisoning (hyperactivity). However, the sensorial process related to DEET repellency does not appear to be altered.Fil: Sfara, Valeria. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. The PRC's overseas Chinese policy

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the People's Republic of China's (PRC) overseas Chinese policy from its founding to the present. Over time China's overseas Chinese policy has evolved to reflect changing migration patterns and favorable international conditions. The overseas Chinese have been both a problem and an instrument of China's domestic and foreign policy agenda. The one constant in Beijing's domestic agenda has been the need to attract foreign exchange--primarily through the overseas Chinese in the form of remittance or investment. Moreover, there has been significant continuity in its foreign policy and corresponding overseas Chinese policy. One of Beijing's primary foreign policy objectives has been to restore relations with its neighbors. Therefore, China sought diplomatic relations with its Southeast Asian neighbors and made efforts to solve the overseas Chinese dual nationality problem. Finally, China's third and fourth generation leaders have undertaken a more pragmatic, sophisticated, and subtler foreign policy approach to achieving Beijing's ambitions. China's "new diplomacy" is changing the way its neighbors view the emerging power and their overseas Chinese communities. Thus, the estimated 35 million overseas Chinese have become assets in connecting China to the outside world.http://archive.org/details/theprcsoverseasc109454030US Air Force (USAF) author.Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited

First Report of Adult Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) Resistance to Pyrethroids in Argentina

    Get PDF
Severe human arboviral diseases can be transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus), including dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever. Adult control using spatial sprays with adulticides is recommended only when dengue outbreaks occur. In Argentina, mainly pyrethroids, like cis-permethrin, have been used as an adulticide, especially since 2008. The evolution and spread of resistance to insecticides is a major concern for vector control. This study reports for the first time pyrethroid resistance in Ae. aegypti adults from Argentina, in the city of Salvador Mazza (Salta). WHO discriminating doses of 0.75% were used for permethrin, 0.05% for deltamethrin, and 5% for malathion. Also the discriminating dose for cis-permethrin (0.6%) was calculated and evaluated for the first time. We found a resistance ratio 50 (RR50) of 10.3 (9.7-10.4) for cis-permethrin, which is considered as high resistance. Our results also indicated resistance to deltamethrin (22.6% mortality) and permethrin (53.6% mortality), and a total susceptibility to malathion (100% mortality). Results from this study highlight the importance of the correct use of insecticides within an Integrated Vector Management (IVM) approach and of early detection of resistance to enable Ae. aegypti control in Argentina. More studies are needed to determine the spread of mosquito resistance to pyrethroids.Fil: Harburguer, Laura Vanesa. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Locomotor behaviour of Blattella germanica modified by DEET

    Get PDF
N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) is the active principle of most insect repellents used worldwide. However, its toxicity on insects has not been widely studied. The aim of this work is to study the effects of DEET on the locomotor activity of Blattella germanica . DEET has a dose-dependent repellent activity on B. germanica. Locomotor activity was significantly lower when insects were pre-exposed to 700 μg/cm2 of DEET for 20 or 30 minutes, but it did not change when pre-exposure was shorter. Locomotor activity of insects that were pre-exposed to 2.000 μg/cm2 of DEET for 10 minutes was significantly lower than the movement registered in controls. No differences were observed when insects were pre-exposed to lower concentrations of DEET. A 30-minute pre-exposure to 700 μg/cm2 of DEET caused a significant decrease in locomotor activity. Movement was totally recovered 24 h later. The locomotor activity measured during the exposure to different concentrations of DEET remained unchanged. Insects with decreased locomotor activity were repelled to the same extent than control insects by the same concentration of DEET. We demonstrated that the repellency and modification of locomotor activity elicited by DEET are non-associated phenomena. We also suggested that the reduction in locomotor activity indicates toxicity of DEET, probably to insect nervous system.Fil: Sfara, Valeria. Combined association and linkage analysis applied to the APOE locus.

Combined association and linkage analysis is a powerful tool for pinpointing functional quantitative traits (QTLs) responsible for regions of significant linkage identified in genome-wide scans. We applied this technique to apoE plasma levels and the APOEε2/ε3/ε4 polymorphism in two Dutch twin cohorts of different age ranges. Across chromosome 19, short tandem repeats and the APOEε2/ε3/ε4 polymorphism were genotyped in adolescent (aged 13-22 years) and adult (aged 34-62 years) Dutch twins. In both samples, evidence for indicative linkage with plasma apoE levels was found (maximum LOD score (MLS)=0.8, MLS=2.5, respectively) at 19q13.32. These linkage regions included the APOE locus. As expected, the APOEε2/ε3/ε4 polymorphism was strongly associated with apoE plasma levels in both samples. An extension of the between/within families association test developed by Fulker et al. ([1999] Am. J. Hum. Genet. 64:259-267) showed that these associations were not due to population stratification. The combined association and linkage analyses revealed that the association of the APOEε2/ε3/ε4 polymorphism with apoE plasma levels completely explained the linkage in the adolescent twins and partly in the adult twins. © 2004 Wiley-Liss, Inc

Symptoms of poisoning for deltamethrin and cis-permethrin on nymphs III of The bloodsucking bug Triatoma infestans is one of the more important vectors of Chagas' disease in South America (WHO 1991), and the pyrethroids are the more effective triatomicides MATERIALS AND METHODS Biological material -Nymphs III of T. infestans were obtained from a colony mantained in our laboratory at 28 o C and a photoperiod of 12: 12 (L: D) hr. The experiments were done on 7-11 days old nymphs starved from the last moult. Chemicals -Deltamethrin [(S)-α-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl (1R)-cis-3-(2,2-dibromovynil)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate] (97%) was provided by courtesy of Roussel-Uclaf (France). Cis-permethrin [3-phenoxybenzyl (1RS)-cis-3-(2, 2-dichlorovynil)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylate] (99%) was a gift from Chemotecnica Sintyal (Argentina). Symptomatology -Pyrethroids were topically applied on the ventral side of the abdominal surface in 0.2 µl of an acetonic solution, each insect receiving 0.02 µg or 2 µg of insecticide. The nature and order of appearance of the symptoms of poisoning were recorded by individual observation of at least 10 nymphs per dose. The following sequence of symptoms was observed: (1) sligt
