    The current unbalance in stacked REBCO tapes -- simulations based on a circuit grid model

    Unlike low temperature superconducting cables, there is so far no perfect solution for REBCO coated conductors to form a fully transposed high current cable. Every REBCO cable concept must import a stack of tapes to achieve an operating current as high as tens of kiloamperes. The stacked REBCO tapes, no matter whether they are twisted or not, however, have a nature of non-transposing and therefore could result in current unbalance. In this manuscript, the current unbalance and the related electrical characteristics of a cable made of 40 stacked REBCO tapes are studied with an electrical circuit simulation. The differences in splice resistances and tape inductances that are both related to the non-transposed structure of a REBCO stack are considered. Results show that for a 40 cm long termination, a proper method to keep the contact resistivity between each tape and the copper termination around 1e-8 ohmm is crucial to totally avoid current unbalance lowering the cable performance. Surprisingly, the inter-tape current transfer is found to be able to further exacerbate local high current though it does make the overall distribution more balanced. The inductance difference induced current unbalance is only important if local defects exist at long REBCO tapes, which on the other hand can be cured by good inter-tape current transfer. For a fast-charging rate of 1 kA/s, the inter-tape contact resistivity should also be low to a level of 1e-8 ohmm to ensure a short current transfer length of around 1 m

    A Chinese Herbal Formula to Improve General Psychological Status in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial on Sichuan Earthquake Survivors

    Introduction. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is accompanied by poor general psychological status (GPS). In the present study, we investigated the effects of a Chinese herbal formula on GPS in earthquake survivors with PTSD. Methods. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial compared a Chinese herbal formula, Xiao-Tan-Jie-Yu-Fang (XTJYF), to placebo in 2008 Sichuan earthquake survivors with PTSD. Patients were randomized into XTJYF (n = 123) and placebo (n = 122) groups. Baseline-to-end-point score changes in the three global indices of the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) and rates of response in the SCL global severity index (GSI) were the primary endpoints. A subanalysis of the nine SCL factors and the sleep quality score were secondary endpoints. Results and Discussion. Compared to placebo, the XTJYF group was significantly improved in all three SCL global indices (P = 0.001~0.028). More patients in the XTJYF group reported “much improved” than the placebo group (P = 0.001). The XTJYF group performed significantly better than control in five out of nine SCL factors (somatization, obsessive-compulsive behavior, depression, anxiety, and hostility (P = 0.001~0.036)), and in sleep quality score (P < 0.001). XTJYF produced no serious adverse events. These findings suggest that XTJYF may be an effective and safe treatment option for improving GPS in patients with PTSD

    Agromyces chromiiresistens sp. nov., Novosphingobium album sp. nov., Sphingobium arseniciresistens sp. nov., Sphingomonas pollutisoli sp. nov., and Salinibacterium metalliresistens sp. nov.: five new members of Microbacteriaceae and Sphingomonadaceae from polluted soil

    There are many unidentified microbes in polluted soil needing to be explored and nominated to benefit the study of microbial ecology. In this study, a taxonomic research was carried out on five bacterial strains which were isolated and cultivated from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy metals polluted soil of an abandoned coking plant. Phylogenetical analysis showed that they belonged to the phyla Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria, and their 16S rRNA gene sequence identities were lower than 98.5% to any known and validly nominated bacterial species, suggesting that they were potentially representing new species. Using polyphasic taxonomic approaches, the five strains were classified as new species of the families Microbacteriaceae and Sphingomonadaceae. Genome sizes of the five strains ranged from 3.07 to 6.60 Mb, with overall DNA G+C contents of 63.57–71.22 mol%. The five strains had average nucleotide identity of 72.38–87.38% and digital DNA-DNA hybridization of 14.0–34.2% comparing with their closely related type strains, which were all below the thresholds for species delineation, supporting these five strains as novel species. Based on the phylogenetic, phylogenomic, and phenotypic characterizations, the five novel species are proposed as Agromyces chromiiresistens (type strain H3Y2-19aT = CGMCC 1.61332T), Salinibacterium metalliresistens (type strain H3M29-4T = CGMCC 1.61335T), Novosphingobium album (type strain H3SJ31-1T = CGMCC 1.61329T), Sphingomonas pollutisoli (type strain H39-1-10T = CGMCC 1.61325T), and Sphingobium arseniciresistens (type strain H39-3-25T = CGMCC 1.61326T). Comparative genome analysis revealed that the species of the family Sphingomonadaceae represented by H39-1-10T, H39-3-25T, and H3SJ31-1T possessed more functional protein-coding genes for the degradation of aromatic pollutants than the species of the family Microbacteriaceae represented by H3Y2-19aT and H3M29-4T. Furthermore, their capacities of resisting heavy metals and metabolizing aromatic compounds were investigated. The results indicated that strains H3Y2-19aT and H39-3-25T were robustly resistant to chromate (VI) and/or arsenite (III). Strains H39-1-10T and H39-3-25T grew on aromatic compounds, including naphthalene, as carbon sources even in the presence of chromate (VI) and arsenite (III). These features reflected their adaptation to the polluted soil environment

    A simulation study on the measurement of D0-D0bar mixing parameter y at BES-III

    We established a method on measuring the \dzdzb mixing parameter yy for BESIII experiment at the BEPCII e+ee^+e^- collider. In this method, the doubly tagged ψ(3770)D0D0\psi(3770) \to D^0 \overline{D^0} events, with one DD decays to CP-eigenstates and the other DD decays semileptonically, are used to reconstruct the signals. Since this analysis requires good e/πe/\pi separation, a likelihood approach, which combines the dE/dxdE/dx, time of flight and the electromagnetic shower detectors information, is used for particle identification. We estimate the sensitivity of the measurement of yy to be 0.007 based on a 20fb120fb^{-1} fully simulated MC sample.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    MODEL OF CROATIAN SEA PASSENGER PORTS MANAGEMENT RATIONALIZATION

    Predmet istraživanja u ovome znanstvenom radu je razvitak pomorskoputničkih luka u Republici Hrvatskoj do 2012. godine. Za definiranje svojstava i determinanti pomorskoputničkih luka koristilo se modelom na bazi matrice rasta. Analiza i vrednovanje pojedinih elemenata modela i dobivene izravne stope rasta imale su za cilj znanstveno formulirati rezultate istraživanja, prema najvažnijim teorijskim zakonitostima razvitka pomorskoputničkih luka u Republici Hrvatskoj. Autori su se u znanstvenom istraživanju i prezentiranju rezultata istraživanja ovog rada služili kombinaciju znanstvenih metoda kao što su: metoda analize i sinteze, metoda konkretizacije, komparativna metoda i metoda modeliranja (matrica rasta). Glavna znanstvena hipoteza dokazana je izravnim stopama rasta odabranih elemenata modela a ona glasi: Znanstveno utemeljenim spoznajama o funkcioniranju i poslovanju sustava pomorskoputničkih luka moguće je predložiti model, mjere i aktivnosti za racionalno upravljanje tim lukama kako bi se osigurao rast i razvoj sustava pomorskoputničkih luka.This paper analyses the sustainable development of sea passenger ports in the Republic of Croatia until 2012. A model of growth was used in order to define the main characteristics and determinants of sea passenger ports. The purpose of the paper was to present a scientifically-based formulation of sustainable development analysis of sea passenger ports in Croatia, based on the evaluation and analysis of relevant elements and resulting direct rates. The authors in their scientific research and presentation used a various combination of scientific methods like: analysis and syntheses method, concretization method, comparative method and modeling method (growth matrix). The main scientific hypothesis is: By using scientifically based acknowledgments about functioning and management of sea passenger port system it is possible to suggest a model, measurements and activities for the rational management of sea passenger ports in Croatia in order to secure their growth and development. This scientific hypothesis was confirmed by the direct rates of growth of the model elements

    Data-analysis strategies for image-based cell profiling

    Image-based cell profiling is a high-throughput strategy for the quantification of phenotypic differences among a variety of cell populations. It paves the way to studying biological systems on a large scale by using chemical and genetic perturbations. The general workflow for this technology involves image acquisition with high-throughput microscopy systems and subsequent image processing and analysis. Here, we introduce the steps required to create high-quality image-based (i.e., morphological) profiles from a collection of microscopy images. We recommend techniques that have proven useful in each stage of the data analysis process, on the basis of the experience of 20 laboratories worldwide that are refining their image-based cell-profiling methodologies in pursuit of biological discovery. The recommended techniques cover alternatives that may suit various biological goals, experimental designs, and laboratories' preferences.Peer reviewe

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead
