    Kinetics of peroxidases in guinea pig bone marrow under immunostimulation

    AbstractEosinophil peroxidase and myeloperoxidase play an important role in the host defense. Both enzymes are present in bone marrow, synthesized by blood progenitor cells. This research investigated the kinetic properties of peroxidases under immunostimulation in guinea pig bone marrow. Results suggest that there are at least two myeloperoxidase isozymes and at least three eosinophil peroxidase isozymes in guinea pig bone marrow and that some of these isozymes are expressed upon immunostimulation

    Comparison of Goitre and Tang estuaries with respect to diversity and dominance of macrofauna

    Goitre and Tang are important estuaries in the Systan and Baluchistan province and according to their freshwater sources arc divided into two different classes. Goitre is flushed with water from Bahoukalat freshwater river during high tide of the Oman Sea but Tang receives its water from the catchment area only in some month of the year (mostly December and January). Dense mangrove cover Goitre estuary causes the T. O. M. of sediments to be higher than the other one. A comparison between several similar sites in these estuaries has shown that diversity of macrofauna in Tang is greater than Goitre. Also dominant fauna in these estuaries are different and it was demonstrated that we could establish a significant relationship between dominance and diameter of particles in the sediment

    Generation of circular polarization of the CMB

    According to the standard cosmology, near the last scattering surface, the photons scattered via Compton scattering are just linearly polarized and then the primordial circular polarization of the CMB photons is zero. In this work we show that CMB polarization acquires a small degree of circular polarization when a background magnetic field is considered or the quantum electrodynamic sector of standard model is extended by Lorentz-noninvariant operators as well as noncommutativity. The existence of circular polarization for the CMB radiation may be verified during future observation programs and it represents a possible new channel for investigating new physics effects.Comment: 28 pages, v3, Phys.     Genetic analysis of field and physiological indicators of drought tolerance in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) using diallel mating design

    In order to study the inheritance of field, physiological and metabolite indicators of drought tolerance in wheat, an eight-parental diallel cross, excluding reciprocals, was grown in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications under two different water regimes (irrigated and rainfed). Significant differences were found for yield potential (Yp), stress yield (Ys), stress tolerance index (STI), leaf water potential (LWP), relative water content (RWC), water use efficiency (WUE) and evapotranspiration efficiency (ETE). Yp, RWC and evapotranspiration efficiency (ETE) showed highly significant differences for both general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA), indicating the involvement of both additive and non-additive gene action in their inheritance. Ys, STI and WUE revealed highly significant differences for SCA, hence non-additive gene action was predominant for these traits. The best general combiners with positive effects, for improvement of Yp, Ys, STI, LWP, RWC, WUE and ETE under drought conditions were parents 5, 1, 6, 2, 7, 1 and 2, respectively. The best specific combination with heterobeltiosis over the best parents for improvement of Yp, Ys, STI, LWP, RWC, WUE and ETE were crosses 3 × 6, 2 × 4, 2 × 6, 5 × 8, 2 × 6, 2 × 4 and 1 × 7, respectively indicating that parents of these crosses are genetically diverse. High broad-sense heritability observed for all the traits confirmed that all the traits are more genetic, but because of low narrow-sense heritability the rule of additive part was low.Key words: Drought tolerance, physiological indicators, diallel mating design, genetic analysis

    A survey of patient safety culture: A tool for improving patient safety in healthcare providers service organizations

    Background and aims: Patient safety is one of the main factors in quality of services provided by a health system. Patient safety culture plays a key role in improvement of patient safety, reduction of medical errors, and prevention of adverse events in health care organizations. Thereby, the present study is aimed to survey patient safety culture in hospitals of Neyshabur University of Medical Sciences. Methods: This research was a cross sectional study that conducted on all qualified staff of hospitals affiliated with Neyshabur University of Medical Sciences in 2013. Hospital Survey of Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) questionnaire was used to assess patient safety culture. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS (16), using Chi-Square test and logistic regression model. Results: Total score average of patient safety culture was 25.50±9.52. The results showed that among the twelve dimensions the highest and lowest scores were obtained by the supervisor/ manager expectations & actions promoting patient safety (score rate 45) and the reporting frequency of adverse events (score rate 15) respectively According to logistic regression model there was also significant relationship between the patient safety culture and direct contact with the patient, employment duration in hospital, and current unit (p<0.05). Conclusion: Total average of patient safety culture and scores of all twelve dimensions were lower than the acceptable criteria. Patient safety culture in the studied hospitals urgently needs enhancement and improvement. So, creating policies to institutionalize and enhance patient safety culture among the staffs are recommended

    Effects of genistein on melanosis and microbial quality of Litopenaeus vannamei during ice storage

    Utilization of genistein as a natural inhibitor was studied alone and in combination with conventional treatments on melanosis and microbial quality of fresh L. vannamei during 10 days ice storage. Treatments were as followed: A (dipping samples in distilled water), B (dipping in 1.25 % sodium metabisulphite solution), C (dipping in 0.01 % genistein + 2% glycerol solution), D (dipping in 0.1 % genistein + 2% glycerol solution), E (dipping in 1% NaCl + 0.05 % EDTA + 0.5 % ascorbic acid + 0.5 % lactic acid solution), F (dipping in 0.01% genistein + 2 % glycerol + 1 % NaCl + 0.05 % EDTA + 0.5 % ascorbic acid + 0.5 % lactic acid solution) and G (dipping in 0.1 % genistein + 2 % glycerol + 1 % NaCl + 0.05 % EDTA + 0.5 % ascorbic acid + 0.5 % lactic acid solution). Results showed that G treatment was more affective on inhibiting of melanosis in L. vannamei. Mesophilic and psycrophilic bacterial counts in G treatment were lower than other treatments during ice storage

    Statistical Mechanics of the Chinese Restaurant Process: lack of self-averaging, anomalous finite-size effects and condensation

    The Pitman-Yor, or Chinese Restaurant Process, is a stochastic process that generates distributions following a power-law with exponents lower than two, as found in a numerous physical, biological, technological and social systems. We discuss its rich behavior with the tools and viewpoint of statistical mechanics. We show that this process invariably gives rise to a condensation, i.e. a distribution dominated by a finite number of classes. We also evaluate thoroughly the finite-size effects, finding that the lack of stationary state and self-averaging of the process creates realization-dependent cutoffs and behavior of the distributions with no equivalent in other statistical mechanical models.Comment: (5pages, 1 figure

    The Comparison between the Motivation of Fifth Grade Students in Regular Elementary Schools & Smart Elementary Schools

    Abstract: The aim of this study is to compare the level of motivation of fifth grade male students in regular elementary schools and smart elementary schools. The design of this study is causal-comparative and the statistical population includes all the fifth grade male students of Tehran’s elementary schools. The Organization of Education of Tehran announced that the number of these students is 2225 students. 62 students from regular schools and 62 students from smart schools were selected and compared. The sampling method used in this study is purposive sampling and the reason behind choosing this method was to select those samples that were closest to the standards. Since the previous studies had published good reviews about the reliability and validity the Hermans Achievement Motivation Questionnaire, it was used to measure the level of motivation of students in both regular and smart schools. Finally, the collected data and descriptive statistics including frequency, median, mean and two independent samples t-test were analyzed. This statistical test showed that there is no significant difference between the level of motivation of students in smart schools and regular schools and the comprehensive system of information and communication technologies facilities has not had any influence on increasing students’ motivation

    Appendicitis in an infant with atypical features

    Acute appendicitis is an uncommon and challenging disease in infancy. Usually, the clinical presentation in neonates and infants is non-specific and varies depending on the age of the child and duration of the disease. Diagnosis of incomplete and atypical Kawasaki disease (KD) in infants is also a challenging aspect and there is no gold standard for this diagnosis and sometimes fever is the only symptom that could be found. Herein, we report a 6-month infant with a 7 days of fever and bilateral pleural effusion, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, thrombocytosis, hypo-albominemia, normal abdominal ultrasound, and primary diagnosis of KD. Final diagnosis was perforated retrocecal appendicitis and abscess formation. Physicians should be aware of the vague signs and symptoms of acute appendicitis in neonates and infants and consider this diagnosis to prevent delayed diagnosis, inappropriate treatment, and consequent morbidity and mortality
