Under-provision of private training by MENA firms: What to Do about It?

    Get PDF
This paper shows that firms in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) provide training to their workers less frequently than firms in other regions and yet seem to be more in need of it. Utilizing firm level data from the Enterprise Surveys for over 100 countries, it attempts to explain that paradox and also identify alternative policy actions that MENA countries might use to substantially increase firm-supplied training by MENA firms. In particular, it points to the potential usefulness of reforms of labor regulations in MENA countries to be less rigid, but also coupling this with stronger enforcement so as to encourage existing firms to be more formal and new firms to enter, grow in size and adopt characteristics more favorable to training over time

    Equivariant KK-theory of GKM bundles

Given a fiber bundle of GKM spaces, π ⁣:MB\pi\colon M\to B, we analyze the structure of the equivariant KK-ring of MM as a module over the equivariant KK-ring of BB by translating the fiber bundle, π\pi, into a fiber bundle of GKM graphs and constructing, by combinatorial techniques, a basis of this module consisting of KK-classes which are invariant under the natural holonomy action on the KK-ring of MM of the fundamental group of the GKM graph of BB. We also discuss the implications of this result for fiber bundles π ⁣:MB\pi\colon M\to B where MM and BB are generalized partial flag varieties and show how our GKM description of the equivariant KK-ring of a homogeneous GKM space is related to the Kostant-Kumar description of this ring.Comment: 15 page

This paper focuses on analyzing the role of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google+,Youtube) with regards to corporate social responsibility (CSR), specifically in the fast food industry. The objectives are to identify the use of social media platforms by fast food restaurants, identify if social media integrate corporate social responsibility in their business thereby limiting marketing of unhealthy meals on their websites, and lastly, to find out if marketing of fast food products on social platforms affect users, especially the young people between the age of 15 to 25. The study analyzed and monitored 70 fast food restaurants and their social media activities. 63 0ut of 70 were found to have at least three social media platforms where they promote their products to end users and none of the restaurants have any restriction in marketing any kind of product using social media. Results from questionnaire survey also found that many social media users get adverts from fast food restaurants with 13.85% being affected to buy the food most times and 47.69% sometimes. 81.54% of the participants also agreed that social media can do a great job in limiting the free marketing of unhealthy products by fast food restaurants. Keywords: Social Media, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Stakeholders, fast food

Background: The ageing population in developing countries has brought a demographic and an epidemiological transition, with the impact of chronic diseases resulting from life style changes on the health status of the population. Objective: To describ a profile geriatrics patient, specifically to identify epidemiologic, clinical, etiologic and outcome of this group at the department of internal medicine to NNH Patients and method: Medical records of all geriatric patients aged ≥65 years admitted at the department of NNH Between January 2012 and December 2015 were retrieved and reviewed retrospectively. Results: A total of 6074 admissions at the internal medicine department of NNH over three years were reported and 1130 (18, 6%) were geriatrics patients, the average age was 75, 95 years and more than half were men (50,7%). 80 % of patients were in the young old group (65-74 years), 13% in the old group (75-84 years) and 7% in the oldest old group (≥85 years). High blood pressure was the frequent comorbidity (12, 3%) and the most symptoms caused hospitalization were stroke (17, 6%), fevers (16, 5%) and worst health (13, 1%). Frequent illnesses were cardiovascular diseases (38.4%), infections, (19.2%) and endocrine diseases (11%). The average length of hospital stays was 8, 7 days. The mortality rate was 18, 2% and the worst outcomes factors were female sex, frail elderly group in 75 to 84 years and high blood pressure. Conclusion: Chronic diseases were responsible of morbidity and mortality for the majority elderly’s patient

Synthesis of Improved Catalytic Materials for High-Temperature Water-gas Shift Reaction

    Get PDF
In this investigation, we report the preparation and characterization of Co-, Cu- and Mn-substituted iron oxide catalytic materials supported on activated carbon. Co-precipitation method and low temperature treatment were used for their synthesis. The influence of chemical composition, stoichiometry, particle size and dispersity on their catalytic activity was studied. Samples were characterized in all stages of their co-precipitation, heating and spend samples after catalytic tests. The obtained results from room and low temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy were combined with analysis of powder X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD). They revealed the preparation of nano-sized iron oxide materials supported on activated carbon. Relaxation phenomena were registered also for the supported phases. The catalytic performance in the water-gas shift reaction was studied. The activity order was as follows: Cu0.5Fe2.5O4 > Co0.5Fe2.5O4 > Mn0.5Fe2.5O4. Catalytic tests demonstrated very promising results and potential application of studied samples due to their cost-effective composition

We derive lower and upper bounds for the size of a hyperoval of a finite polar space of rank 3. We give a computer-free proof for the uniqueness, up to isomorphism, of the hyperoval of size 126 of H(5, 4) and prove that the near hexagon E-3 has up to isomorphism a unique full embedding into the dual polar space DH(5, 4)
