CROWN-TO-ROOT RATIO IN ENDODONTIC SURGERY: A SURVIVAL STUDY
Aim: to assess the influence of the crown height (CH), root length (RL) and crown-to-root ratio (CRR) on the survival of te- eth subjected to surgical endodontic retreatment and classi- fied as periapically healed.
Methods: a single operator performed all the endodontic mi- crosurgery interventions. The present analysis selected the te- eth classified as ‘‘complete periapical healing’’ according to the Molven-Halse-Grung scale. The periapical radiographs were analyzed by two independent calibrated examiners, who measured CH and RL in a blind manner. The CRR was calcula- ted as the ratio of the two variables CH and RL. The measure- ments were performed by comparing the post-operative radio- graphs (t0) with those taken for a previous retrospective analysis (t1) and the most recent available (t2). An independent
statistician conducted a survival analysis using Kaplan-Meier plots and a log-rank test (a = 0.05).
Results: thirty-eight patients were evaluated, each one contri- buting to the study with a single tooth. The mean follow-up pe- riod was 5,96 ± 3,36 years. Comparing the CRR and RL values between t1 and t2, the difference was found statistically signifi- cant (p = 0.03). Survival was improved for the teeth with roots longer than 7 mm. There were no statistically significant diffe- rences among the remaining comparisons.
Conclusions: root length ≥ 7mm exhibited better chances of long-term survival. Over time, a risk of further decrease of cli- nical RL due to periodontal disease and consequent increase of CRR could be critical by a mechanical point of view. Other studies are needed
Modeling the evolution of item rating networks using time-domain preferential attachment
The understanding of the structure and dynamics of the intricate network of connections among people that consumes products through Internet appears as an extremely useful asset in order to study emergent properties related to social behavior. This knowledge could be useful, for example, to improve the performance of personal recommendation algorithms. In this contribution, we analyzed five-year records of movie-rating transactions provided by Netflix, a movie rental platform where users rate movies from an online catalog. This dataset can be studied as a bipartite user-item network whose structure evolves in time. Even though several topological properties from subsets of this bipartite network have been reported with a model that combines random and preferential attachment mechanisms [Beguerisse Díaz et al., 2010], there are still many aspects worth to be explored, as they are connected to relevant phenomena underlying the evolution of the network. In this work, we test the hypothesis that bursty human behavior is essential in order to describe how a bipartite user-item network evolves in time. To that end, we propose a novel model that combines, for user nodes, a network growth prescription based on a preferential attachment mechanism acting not only in the topological domain (i.e. based on node degrees) but also in time domain. In the case of items, the model mixes degree preferential attachment and random selection. With these ingredients, the model is not only able to reproduce the asymptotic degree distribution, but also shows an excellent agreement with the Netflix data in several time-dependent topological properties
Phase-resolved Crab pulsar measurements from 25 to 400 GeV with the MAGIC telescopes
We report on observations of the Crab pulsar with the MAGIC telescopes. Our
data were taken in both monoscopic (> 25GeV) and stereoscopic (> 50GeV)
observation modes. Two peaks were detected with both modes and phase-resolved
energy spectra were calculated. By comparing with Fermi- LAT measurements, we
find that the energy spectrum of the Crab pulsar does not follow a power law
with an exponential cutoff, but has an additional hard component, extending up
to at least 400 GeV. This suggests that the emission above 25 GeV is not
dominated by curvature radiation, as suggested in the standard scenarios of the

Role of surface microgeometries on electron escape probability and secondary electron yield of metal surfaces
The influence of microgeometries on the Secondary Electron Yield (SEY) of surfaces is investigated. Laser written structures of different aspect ratio (height to width) on a copper surface tuned the SEY of the surface and reduced its value to less than unity. The aspect ratio of microstructures was methodically controlled by varying the laser parameters. The results obtained corroborate a recent theoretical model of SEY reduction as a function of the aspect ratio of microstructures. Nanostructures - which are formed inside the microstructures during the interaction with the laser beam - provided further reduction in SEY comparable to that obtained in the simulation of structures which were coated with an absorptive layer suppressing secondary electron emission
Short-Term Bisphosphonate Therapy Could Ameliorate Osteonecrosis: A Complication in Childhood Hematologic Malignancies
Osteonecrosis (ON) is a critical complication in the treatment of childhood leukemia and lymphoma. It
particularly affects survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma reflecting the
cumulative exposure to glucocorticosteroid therapy. ON is often multiarticular and bilateral, specially
affecting weight-bearing joints. A conventional approach suggests a surgical intervention even if
pharmacological options have also recently been investigated. We reported two cases of long time steroid-treated patients who underwent Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) for hematological disease. Both
patients developed femoral head osteonecrosis (ON) that was diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI) and the ON was also accompanied with pain and a limp. Despite of the conventional strategies of
therapy, we successfully started a short-term treatment with bisphosphonates in order to decrease the pain
and the risk of fracture
