LANDSAT imagery of the Venetian Lagoon: A multitemporal analysis

    Get PDF
The use of LANDSAT multispectral scanner images from 1975 to 1979 to determine pollution dispersion in the central basin of the lagoon under varying tidal conditions is described. Images taken during the late spring and representing both short and long range tidal dynamics were processed for partial haze removal and removal of residual striping. Selected spectral bands were correlated to different types of turbid water. The multitemporal data was calibrated, classified considering sea truth data, and evaluated. The classification differentiated tide diffusion, algae belts, and industrial, agricultural, and urban turbidity distributions. Pollution concentration is derived during the short time interval between inflow and outflow and from the distance between the two lagoon inlets and the industrial zones. Increasing pollution of the lagoon is indicated

Classification of submersed aquatic vegetation of the Venice lagoon using MIVIS airborne data

In July 2001 an aerial survey with MIVIS (Multispectral Infrared and Visible Spectrometer) hyperspectral sensor and an in situ survey campaign were performed on Venice lagoon to map benthic macro-algae and sea phanerogams distribution. On MIVIS VIS spectral range images, training areas for benthic macro-algae and sea phanerogams have been selected by using sea truth data collected by CNR-ISMAR from in situ campaign and periodic area surveys used in the lagoon by the local authorities. The derived spectral signature has been used to classify the area in order to produce the maps of the pure and mixture submersed vegetation population. The algorithm applied to the data is based on the Subpixel Spectral Analytical Process (SSAP) method. The method assumes that the spectrum of a single pixel is composed of a fraction of the material of interest while the remainder of the observed spectra contains background materials. In terms of recognition processes the produced maps present a very good agreement with the sea truth data even though the fraction material expressed in the maps does not represent a quantitative estimation of the material of interest

(Autorenreferat)"In 2007, the voting age in Austria was lowered from 18 to 16 years of age. For the first time, adolescents, above the age of 16, were allowed to vote in the early parliamentary elections of 2008. This new situation served as a starting point for a post-election survey of political attitudes, voting behavior and the democratic understanding of the 16 to 18 year olds. The article summarizes some of the main findings. It draws the conclusion that adolescents are a politically heterogeneous group, expressing different attitudes. The status as a school pupil or an employee represents a particularly important factor." (author's abstract

Knuckle pads mimic early psoriatic arthritis

Knuckle pads or Garrod\u2019s nodes are a rare, non-inflammatory condition. They consist of benign, well-circumscribed fibro-adipose tissue over the small joints of hands and feet. Knuckle pads may be under-diagnosed and mistaken for early arthritis. The rheumatologist should perform an accurate differential diagnosis in which he can be helped by ultrasound and by other colleagues, such as the dermatologist. Ultrasound is considered useful in the assessment of the thickening of the subcutaneous tissue, located usually on the extensor site of proximal interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal hand joints. Dermoscopy may play a role in detecting epidermal and dermal changes. We hereby report the case of a female patient with knuckle pads mimicking psoriatic arthritis

(Autorenreferat)"In 2013, the federal parliament, along with four state parliaments, was elected in Austria. While the specific conditions varied, the elections saw also the successful rise of newly emerging parties, first of all of the Team Stronach. The article presents some empirical findings on voting behaviour, motives and voter transitions and tries to give an overview on possible success-factors for new parties. The data show quite different party choices between men and women as a manifestation of a gender gap and between younger and older voters as a generation gap again. Team Stronach benefitted especially from former FPÖ-/ BZÖ-voters and from the support of (younger)men." (author's abstract

(Autorenreferat)"The year 2010, in Austria, was shaped politically by the regional elections in Burgenland, Styria and Vienna. The SPÖ held the position of governor in all three states, tried to defend its majorities, and faced mainly the FPÖ as emerging competitor. The article presents selected findings of the corresponding election-day surveys and the voter transition analyses, interested in comparing trends in the states. By focusing on possible differences in the voting behavior of women and men and of younger and older voters a closer look is being taken on the voting and non-voting motives and an eventual personalization. The results show an increasingly blurred gender and generation gap. Furthermore, a clear personalization in voting motivation cannot be found. The conclusions imply a variety of challenges for parties concerning the coming next elections." (author's abstract

Effectiveness of digital-based interventions for children with mathematical learning difficulties : A meta-analysis

Abstract The purpose of this work was to meta-analyze empirical evidence about the effectiveness of digital-based interventions for students with mathematical learning difficulties. Furthermore, we investigated whether the school level of the participants and the software instructional approach were decisive modulated factors. A systematic search of randomized controlled studies published between 2003 and 2019 was conducted. A total of 15 studies with 1073 participants met the study selection criterion. A random effects meta-analysis indicated that digital-based interventions generally improved mathematical performance (mean ES = 0.55), though there was a significant heterogeneity across studies. There was no evidence that videogames offer additional advantages with respect to digital-based drilling and tutoring approaches. Moreover, effect size was not moderated when interventions were delivered in primary school or in preschool
