Experiments on the Gas Dynamics of the Mt. St. Helens 1980 Lateral Blast

Field evidence suggests that the lateral blast in the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption behaved like an underexpanded jet flow. We conduct two experiments to investigate this hypothesis. In our first experiment, we use the compressible flow--shallow-water analogy to measure the geometry of the shock structure around the underexpanded jet, which is comparable with the position of the interface between the direct and channelized blast zones described by Kieffer (1981). Also, Kieffer and Sturtevant (1988) identified furrows created by the blast which were possibly formed by scouring due to Goertler vortices induced by curvature in the terrain. In our second experiment, carried out in a compressible flow laboratory, we investigate an additional Goertler vortex generation mechanism due to the curvature of the shear layer adjacent to the intercepting shocks in the underexpanded jet. These experiments allow for a more-detailed scrutiny of the underexpanded jet--lateral blast analogy proposed by Kieffer (1981)

Reestruturação urbana e social da fronteira: Mapeamentos e debates.

A Escola Popular de Planejamento da Cidade é uma metodologia de construção de conhecimento colaborativo que associa a pesquisa-ação e a educação popular tem como objetivo interferir na produção desigual das cidades. Tem como antecedentes estudos colaborativos em mais de 300 favelas brasileiras, e projeto de pesquisa em rede sobre as remoções forçadas, denominado Observatório de Remoções. Na Fronteira Trinacional, este projeto baseia-se na partilha ativa de experiências solidárias e emancipatórias, com estudantes universitários de toda a América Latina e do Caribe, populações vulneráveis as remoções forçadas e a processos de injustiça ambiental, movimentos sociais e instituições de direito. Com essa rede colaborativa, são pensadas soluções que reduzam os conflitos humanos e urbanos identificados. O principal resultado nos últimos dois anos de trabalho, são mais de 60 ações de baixo custo, envolvendo 250 voluntários em processos de formação emancipatórios, cinco comunidades vulneráveis e mais de 5 mil pessoas que conquistaram o direito de permanecer em suas casas

Análise da organização da Atenção Básica no Espírito Santo: (des)velando cenários

O objetivo foi revelar aspectos da organização da Atenção Básica à Saúde nos 78 municípios do estado do Espírito Santo - Brasil, no contexto avaliativo do Programa Nacional de Melhoria do Acesso e da Qualidade da Atenção Básica, no período de junho a setembro de 2012. Foram analisados três eixos: 1. trabalho em saúde: evidenciou desprecarização das relações de trabalho; 2. processo de trabalho, planejamento e acolhimento: dispositivos operados satisfatoriamente; 3. estrutura, ambiência e acessibilidade: revelou dificuldades de utilização dos serviços pelos usuários devido à inadequação do ambiente. Constatamos avanços e desafios na ampliação do acesso e melhoria da qualidade neste contexto
