Influence of varying air pressure in air voids on the resistance to permanent deformation of new-laid asphalt concrete wearing courses

Eine vorzeitige Freigabe frisch verlegter Asphaltdeckschichten für den Verkehr kann frühzeitig zur Entstehung von Spurrinnen führen. Zur Untersuchung dieses Sachverhalts wurde der Verformungswiderstand einer Asphaltdeckschichtvariante mittels dynamischer Stempeleindringversuche nach unterschiedlich schneller Abkühlung und nach Abkühlung und Wiedererwärmung nach unterschiedlich langer Ruhephase angesprochen. Es konnte nachgewiesen werden, daß durch langsame Abkühlung und besonders eine Ruhepause von sechzehn Stunden dem Auftreten vorzeitiger Verformungen wirkungsvoll begegnet werden kann. Als eine mögliche Ursache für die Entstehung von Spurrinnen an frisch Asphaltdeckschichten wird von Fachleuten die Theorie diskutiert, daß beim Verdichten in sich abgeschlossene, äußerlich unzugängliche Hohlräume entstehen, deren eingeschlossene Luft bei der Abkühlung alleine wegen der Temperaturänderung unter einen Unterdruck gerät. Der Theorie wurde anhand von Berechnungen auf der Grundlage thermodynamischer Gleichungen nachgegangen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß der Einfluß der Luftdruckschwankungen in den abgeschlossenen Hohlräumen des Asphalts nur sehr gering ist und dass der Effekt des verzögerten Aufbaus eines Verformungswiderstands somit auf die thixotropen Eigenschaften des Bitumens infolge Strukturbildung zurückzuführen ist.A premature release of new-laid asphalt wearing courses for traffic can cause early rutting. To examine this matter the resistance to deformation of an asphalt wearing course was tested after different storage conditions (different cooling gradient, cooling and re-warming and different resting periods) in the dynamic penetration test. These examinations proved that a low cooling gradient and especially a resting period of sixteen hours respond effective-ly the danger of rutting. Different reasons for the developement of ruts on new-laid asphalt wearing courses are dis-cussed among experts. One theory is that the changing air pressure in non-open air voids due to temperature changes while cooling of the new-laid asphalt wearing course causes the phenomenon of rutting. Within the scope of this „work“ this theory was analysed based on thermo-dynamic calculations. The results point out only an insignificant influence of the changing air pressure in non-open air voids. As a consequence the delayed developement of the resistance to deformation is explained by the thixotropic characteristics of bitumen as a result of the building up of an inner structure

Co-workership: development of an assessment tool

Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop an easy-to-use, theoretically well-founded and psychometrically sound assessment tool of the concept co-workership. Design/methodology/approach Firstly, inductively generated examples of favourable and unfavourable co-worker behaviours were collected, clustered and then expressed as frequency-based Likert-type scale items. Data were obtained from 825 Swedish white collar workers and military personnel. A factor analysis (principal axis factoring with oblique rotation) resulted in a seven-factor solution built up by 30 items and forming the instrument Co-Worker Questionnaire (Co-Worker Q). Findings The factors have a strong resemblance to the content of dominating models of leadership, followership, organizational citizenship behaviour and leader–member exchange. The factor scales had relatively high reliability (high Cronbach’s alpha coefficients and low standard errors of measurement). Regarding discriminability, women scored more favourably on five of the factors, men on one factor and age differences were noted on two factors. Research limitations/implications Shortcomings include the lack of data on possibly related aspects including person factors, such as personality and socio-economic status, and contextual factors such as more detailed data on the type of work environment and organizational culture. Practical implications The instrument has an easy-to-use format and can be used in organization development interventions with a co-workership focus and in individualized coaching or mentoring programmes. Originality/value The co-workership concept has so far mainly been used in the Nordic countries. The development of the Co-Worker Q opens up for broader applications.publishedVersio

Sweden succeeded in remaining a non-combatant through the First World War. However, the conflict affected the nation in many ways, for example in terms of film production and film consumption. The Swedish film industry was growing rapidly already before the outbreak of the First World War. The number of cinemas increased every year. It is estimated that there were 700 cinemas in Sweden in 1919, twice the amount compared to 1914. Probably because Sweden did not take an active part in the war, it was, with a few noteworthy exceptions, rare that films produced in Sweden commented on the ongoing conflict
