The Purposes of National Associations

Leading Global Teams
Global
teams
that
are
characterized
by
national,
cultural
and
linguistic
heterogeneity
and
operate
in
a
globally
dispersed
virtual
environment
are
becoming
an
established
form
of
organizing
work
in
multinational
organizations.
As
global
team
leadership
research
is
rather
limited,
we
review
the
literature
on
leading
multicultural
and
virtual
teams
in
a
global
context,
focusing
on
leadership
competencies,
styles,
strategies
and
modes.
We
also
examine
the
emergent
concepts
of
biculturalism,
global
mindset
and
cultural
intelligence
with
respect
to
team
leaders.
Our
aim
is
to
add
to
our
knowledge
of
leading
global
teams,
highlight
recent
trends
and
suggest
directions
for
future
research.
Three
themes
for
global
team
leadership
emerged:
leaders
as
boundary
spanners,
bridge
makers
and
blenders;
people-oriented
leadership;
and
leveraging
diversity.
We
discuss
implications
for
research
and
practice

The interface between morphology and action planning: a comparison of two species of New World monkeys
Recent research with several species of nonhuman primates suggests sophisticated motor-planning abilities observed in human adults may be ubiquitous among primates. However, there is considerable variability in the extent to which these abilities are expressed across primate species. In the present experiment, we explore whether the variability in the expression of anticipatory motor-planning abilities may be attributed to cognitive differences (such as tool use abilities) or whether they may be due to the consequences of morphological differences (such as being able to deploy a precision grasp). We compared two species of New World monkeys that differ in their tool use abilities and manual dexterity: squirrel monkeys, Saimiri sciureus (less dexterous with little evidence for tool use) and tufted capuchins, Sapajus apella (more dexterous and known tool users). The monkeys were presented with baited cups in an untrained food extraction task. Consistent with the morphological constraint hypothesis, squirrel monkeys frequently showed second-order motor planning by inverting their grasp when picking up an inverted cup, while capuchins frequently deployed canonical upright grasping postures. Findings suggest that the lack of ability for precision grasping may elicit more consistent second-order motor planning, as the squirrel monkeys (and other species that have shown a high rate of second-order planning) have fewer means of compensating for inefficient initial postures. Thus, the interface between morphology and motor planning likely represents an important factor for understanding both the ontogenetic and phylogenetic origins of sophisticated motor-planning abilities
Statistical estimation of trailing edge noise from finite wall-mounted airfoils

Acoustics2016 - The Second Australasian Acoustical Societies ConferenceIt is important to be able to accurately model the flow and noise generated by finite wall-mounted airfoil flows because of the many engineering applications in which these flows occur. One method for predicting turbulent trailing edge noise is the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes based statistical noise model (RSNM) of Doolan et al. (Proceedings of 20th International Congress on Acoustics, ICA 2010). The RSNM method has previously been used successfully on a range of two-dimensional geometry-flow cases. In this paper a new turbulent velocity cross-spectrum model and improved implementation are proposed to allow the RSNM method to be used to effectively and efficiently predict turbulent trailing edge noise from more complex three-dimensional cases. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations of a series of wing-in-junction cases are used in combination with the developed acoustic model to predict the far-field noise and compared against experimental noise measurements.Jesse Coombs, Con Doolan, Anthony Zander, Danielle Moreau and Laura Brook
SEREEGA: Simulating Event-Related EEG Activity
Abstract Electroencephalography (EEG) is a popular method to monitor brain activity, but it can be difficult to evaluate EEG-based analysis methods because no ground-truth brain activity is available for comparison. Therefore, in order to test and evaluate such methods, researchers often use simulated EEG data instead of actual EEG recordings, ensuring that it is known beforehand which e ects are present in the data. As such, simulated data can be used, among other things, to assess or compare signal processing and machine learn-ing algorithms, to model EEG variabilities, and to design source reconstruction methods. In this paper, we present SEREEGA, short for Simulating Event-Related EEG Activity . SEREEGA is a MATLAB-based open-source toolbox dedicated to the generation of sim-ulated epochs of EEG data. It is modular and extensible, at initial release supporting ve different publicly available head models and capable of simulating multiple different types of signals mimicking brain activity. This paper presents the architecture and general work ow of this toolbox, as well as a simulated data set demonstrating some of its functions. Highlights Simulated EEG data has a known ground truth, which can be used to validate methods. We present a general-purpose open-source toolbox to simulate EEG data. It provides a single framework to simulate many different types of EEG recordings. It is modular, extensible, and already includes a number of head models and signals. Boceprevir in combination with HIV protease inhibitors in patients with advanced fibrosis-altered drug-drug interactions?
In HIV/HCV co-infected patients improved treatment outcomes have been reported for the HCV protease inhibitors (PIs) boceprevir (BOC) and telaprevir (TVR), reaching SVR rates of up to 70% in pilot trials. Due to complex drug-drug-interactions triple therapy is substantially limited in HIV/HCV-coinfected individuals. Co-administration of BOC with the commonly available HIV PIs has been reported not only to decrease the level of BOC but also to lead to relevant decreases in the respective HIV PI. Here, we report on two patients who received BOC-containing HCV triple therapy in combination with a HIV PI. Patient 1 was on darunavir 800 mg/ritonavir 100 mg once-daily mono-therapy. Using FibroScan a liver stiffness of 34 kPa suggested liver cirrhosis prior to start of HCV triple therapy. At week 5 of HCV triple therapy darunavir trough concentration was measured in the reference range with 3777 ng/ml (reference trough concentration 2400–4600 ng/ml). HCV-RNA became negative at week 10 and HIV-RNA was below detection limit (<40 copies/ml) at all times. Patient 2 was on a simplified FTC qd and fos-amprenavir 700 mg/ritonavir 100 mg bid regimen. Liver disease had also progressed to liver cirrhosis, confirmed in FibroScan, with a liver stiffness of 32 kPa. At week 8 of HCV triple therapy fos-amprenavir trough level was measured in the normal reference range with 1699 ng/ml (reference trough concentration 750–2500 ng/ml). At week 11 HCV-RNA was <12 IU/ml and HIV viral load was below detection limit of <40 copies/ml at all times. Our clinical data suggest that in patients with advanced liver disease possibly drug levels of HIV PIs which are coadministered with BOC may be within the normal range. In order to better understand the true amount of drug interactions between BOC and commonly used HIV PIs in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients with more advanced liver fibrosis, urgently more PK studies are required to make HCV triple therapy accessible for a wider number of HIV/HCV-coinfected patients in desperate need of these drugs

A Framework for Developing Multiyear Conferences on Current Societal Issues
This article describes how Extension professionals and university faculty collaborated on the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a conference to address a key societal issue. Needs assessment and evaluation results are presented as well as an explanation of how results were used in planning future conferences. With limited Extension budgets and personnel, partnering among Extension specialists, university faculty, and experts in relevant topics is a valuable and efficient way to provide the most impact for a community. Developing multiyear conferences to address significant societal issues may be a new way to increase Extension\u27s impact
Measurement of Solar Spectral Irradiance and Surface Ozone at Carrollton, Georgia, USA, During the Great American Eclipse on 21 August 2017
Measurements conducted at the University of West Georgia, Carrollton, Georgia, during the time of the solar eclipse of 21st August 2017 demonstrated that the integrated spectral irradiance in defined wavelength ranges in the ultraviolet and visible calculated as a fraction of the total irradiance reached a minimum at maximum obscuration of the Sun, whereas in an infrared range it was maximum. The method of analysis adopted supports the view that the changes in spectral irradiance during highly obscured partial phases is a consequence of limb darkening. In a surface ozone measurement, a minimum in ozone concentration occurred 30 +_ minutes after the instant of maximum obscuration. The observation is explained as a combined effects of change in reaction rates of photochemical generation and degradation of ozone
