Asymptotic and exact expansions of heat traces

    Get PDF
We study heat traces associated with positive unbounded operators with compact inverses. With the help of the inverse Mellin transform we derive necessary conditions for the existence of a short time asymptotic expansion. The conditions are formulated in terms of the meromorphic extension of the associated spectral zeta-functions and proven to be verified for a large class of operators. We also address the problem of convergence of the obtained asymptotic expansions. General results are illustrated with a number of explicit examples.Comment: 44 LaTeX pages, 2 figure

    Zygmunt Haupt's literary engineering

Prezentowany artykuł podejmuje tematykę konstrukcji świata przedstawionego, a zwłaszcza literackich postaci, w prozie Zygmunta Haupta z wykorzystaniem narzędzi psychoanalizy Sigmunda Freuda oraz Jacques'a Lacana. With the tools borrowed from the psychoanalytical theory of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan, this article discusses the topic of the represented world, and especially literary characters, in the prose of Zygmunt Haupt. The concept of the drive presented as an artistic montage - as developed by Lacan - turns out to be particularly useful in the analysis of literary portraits depicted by Haupt. Constructed as a montage of memories, this prose points to the very mechanism of imaginary representation driven by what is described by Freud as "drive-spring". It constructs a stage on which individual characters are presented; it drives them as characters. It is also a metaphor describing the mechanisms of remembering and writing. Propelled by the "drive-spring" those literary characters resemble dolls or mannequins; they also point to the surrealist tradition within which these literary representations can be located

BACKGROUND: Given the sympatric occurrence in some regions of Europe and the great epidemiological significance of D. reticulatus and D. marginatus species, we investigated the behaviour of these ticks during inter-specific and mono-specific host infestations. FINDINGS: The investigations were conducted on rabbits at 20 ± 3 °C and humidity of 38 ± 1 %. The inter-specific infestations groups consisted of 20 females and ten males of D. marginatus and 20 females and ten males of D. reticulatus on each host, whereas mono-specific infestations involved 40 females and 20 males of each species. The investigations have demonstrated competition between the two tick species resulting in modification of the behaviour on the host and the feeding course in D. marginatus females by the presence of D. reticulatus. In the inter-specific group, D. marginatus females attached for a longer time (mean 2.74 ± 1.12 h) than in the mono-specific group (mean 1.24 ± 0.97 h) (p < 0.0001). The feeding period of these females was shorter (9.45 ± 1.30 days) than in the mono-specific group (13.15 ± 2.53 days) (p < 0.0001), but they exhibited a statistically significantly higher body weight in comparison with the females from the mono-specific infestation (p = 0.0155). In D. reticulatus females, no significant difference was found in the host attachment and feeding rates between the mono-specific and inter-specific groups. CONCLUSIONS: The differences in the behaviour of the females from both species during co-feeding reflect physiological adaptation to environmental conditions, which enables them to ingest blood and reproduce. During co-feeding of D. reticulatus and D. marginatus on the same host, two inter-specific systems with different physiological features are formed, which may influence the transmission of tick-borne pathogens

Prediction Error-based Classification for Class-Incremental Learning

Class-incremental learning (CIL) is a particularly challenging variant of continual learning, where the goal is to learn to discriminate between all classes presented in an incremental fashion. Existing approaches often suffer from excessive forgetting and imbalance of the scores assigned to classes that have not been seen together during training. In this study, we introduce a novel approach, Prediction Error-based Classification (PEC), which differs from traditional discriminative and generative classification paradigms. PEC computes a class score by measuring the prediction error of a model trained to replicate the outputs of a frozen random neural network on data from that class. The method can be interpreted as approximating a classification rule based on Gaussian Process posterior variance. PEC offers several practical advantages, including sample efficiency, ease of tuning, and effectiveness even when data are presented one class at a time. Our empirical results show that PEC performs strongly in single-pass-through-data CIL, outperforming other rehearsal-free baselines in all cases and rehearsal-based methods with moderate replay buffer size in most cases across multiple benchmarks

Poisoning with cardiological drugs in patients hospitalized in the toxicological and cardiological department from 04/2013 to 12/2021

Introduction and purpose: Cardiological drugs are widely used in the management of various cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, angina, heart failure, and arrhythmias. However, when these drugs are taken in excessive amounts or are not used as prescribed, they can become toxic and cause significant harm to the heart and other organs. Our study aims to illustrate the most frequent causes of poisoning with cardiological drugs in patients hospitalized in the toxicological and cardiological department from April 2013 to December 2021. Brief description of the state of knowledge: Poisoning with cardiological drugs is a growing concern for healthcare professionals. In 2019, cardiovascular toxins were one of the top 10 categories of poisons evaluated by medical toxicologists. Data collected from the analyzed toxicology and cardiology department include a group of 387 hospitalized patients. The largest proportion were cases intoxicated by beta-adrenoreceptor antagonists. The second most common group was poisonings by angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors. A slightly lower proportion implicated poisonings caused by other, unidentified substances affecting the cardiovascular system - calcium channel blockers and other antihypertensive drugs. Conclusions: All of the data demonstrated in our study shows the importance of understanding the pharmacology, pathophysiology, and treatment strategies of poisonings caused by cardiological drugs which are one the most widely used medications worldwide
