Coupling strength control in photonic crystal/photonic wire multiple cavity devices

    Get PDF
Resonance splitting has been demonstrated for two coupled micro-cavities with control of the free spectral range between the resonance peaks, together with a normalised transmission level of approximately 60%. Coupled micro-cavity-based structures that were separated by two closely spaced in-line coupler sections between the two micro-cavities have also been successfully fabricated and measured. The coupling strength of the two cavities was controlled via the use of hole tapering in the middle section between the two cavities. 2D finite-difference time-domain simulation shows close agreement with the results of measurements

Heart Rate Variability: A possible machine learning biomarker for mechanical circulatory device complications and heart recovery

Cardiovascular disease continues to be the number one cause of death in the United States, with heart failure patients expected to increase to \u3e8 million by 2030. Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices are now better able to manage acute and chronic heart failure refractory to medical therapy, both as bridge to transplant or as bridge to destination. Despite significant advances in MCS device design and surgical implantation technique, it remains difficult to predict response to device therapy. Heart rate variability (HRV), measuring the variation in time interval between adjacent heartbeats, is an objective device diagnostic regularly recorded by various MCS devices that has been shown to have significant prognostic value for both sudden cardiac death as well as all-cause mortality in congestive heart failure (CHF) patients. Limited studies have examined HRV indices as promising risk factors and predictors of complication and recovery from left ventricular assist device therapy in end-stage CHF patients. If paired with new advances in machine learning utilization in medicine, HRV represents a potential dynamic biomarker for monitoring and predicting patient status as more patients enter the mechanotrope era of MCS devices for destination therapy

Improving the Efficiency and Resolution of Time of Flight (TOF) Mass Spectrometer for Magnetospheric Applications.

The Earth magnetosphere is the volume of space formed by the Earth magnetic field in response to the flow of plasma from the solar wind. Although the magnetopause shields us from the solar wind there are far more particles that penetrate with energy, and momentum to the Earths magnetosphere and interacts with the Earth’s magnetic field to create various plasmas and currents which shape and couple different regions of magnetosphere. The study of the dynamics of ions in and outside of the magnetosphere is done through mass spectrometer. Over the years, CODIF Ion TOF spectrometer have been used to understand the composition of the ions. However, the total ion detection efficiency has been decreased by a factor of 50. Thus, the scope of this project is to improve the mass resolution of the detector by understanding the scattering of the ions within the instrument. Using SRIM and SIMION simulations, we model the interaction of ions with Micro-Channel Plates (MCP) and carbon foils, which are vital components in time-of-flight detectors

Characteristic of x-ray tomography performance using CdTe timepix detector

X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is a non-destructive technique for visualizing interior features within solid objects, and for obtaining digital information on their 3-D geometries and properties. The selection of CdTe Timepix detector has a sufficient performance of imaging detector is based on quality of detector performance and energy resolution. The study of Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) shows a 70% contrast at 4 lp/mm was achieved for the 55 µm pixel pitch detector with the 60 kVp X-ray tube and 5 keV noise level. No significant degradation in performance was observed for X-ray tube energies of 20 – 60 keV. The paper discusses the application of the CdTe Timepix detector to produce a good quality image of X-ray tomography imaging

    Understanding Thermometry at Low Temperature

Cryogenics play a vital role in building a Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) target for electron scattering experiments. The target material temperature was monitored using thermometry in order to evaluate their stability for use in the low temperature cryogenic bath of a DNP target. In this project, I investigated there solutions and accuracies of carbon ceramic, Cernox, Allen-Bradley, and thermocouple sensors at five known temperatures

Surabaya is a metropolitan city and the capital of East Java province. As the second largest city in Indonesia, the growth rate and number of residents are so much, inversely proportional to the area of residential land in the city of Surabaya which is getting narrower. In order to meet the needs of residents and ensure comfort in the hotel, a building needs to plan a clean water system, dirty water or commonly referred to as a plumbing system. With proper planning of the plumbing system, clean and dirty water can be distributed properly throughout the rooms in the hotel and is more economical and effective for operation and maintenance costs. In planning the plumbing system in the Shafira Surabaya Hotel building, data on the required clean water discharge, water storage capacity, design of clean water and waste water systems, and hydrant system planning are needed in the building. The planning results are, the discharge of clean water needs at Shafira Hotel Surabaya is 16,15 m3 / hour or 4,5 liters / second. Underground water storage capacity (Ground Water Tank) is 64 m3. The capacity of the lower water storage for firefighting is 150 m3. The capacity of the upper water storage (Roof Tank) is 32 m3 and the capacity of the waste water storage (Equalization Tank) is 48 m3. Dirty water and used water The planned water disposal system at Shafira Hotel is a separate system, namely dirty water and used water flowed through different pipes using PVC pipes. The hydrant or fire extinguisher system in this flat uses 2 indoor hydrant boxes / fire hose reels and 8 Portable Fire Extinguishers on each floor which are placed inside the building, as well as 2 outdoor hydrants on the 1st floor which are located outside the building

Advertising Message Processing Amongst Urban Children: With Reference To TV Advertising in Pakistan.

The current study extends the knowledge of cognitive processing of advertising messages by urban children in Pakistan. Data were collected from 230 children in age bracket 7 - 12 years, drawn by using the cluster sampling approach. Structured questionnaire using three point rating scale was used. Data analysis showed that children’s capability to understand, decode and process advertising messages is directed not only by their own cognitive capabilities at different age levels but also through societal and personal backgrounds. Some communal and social customs related to tolerability and aptness of human behavior also manipulate the processing of advertising messages by children of either sex. Some other factors including the model liking, role played, story, and jingle will not only influence liking or disliking of some specific advertisements and therefore its decoding. At this age group, it was not appropriate to use advanced psychometric techniques for study, so, a simple three a point scale was used for data collection. Further research may explore other insights by using development in measuring tools and techniques. How advertising messages are decoded by children and which are important sources of persuading and influencing is a topic not explored much in Pakistan. Therefore, the study would add some insights for good understanding the children’s capabilities to process and ultimately scheming valuable communication approaches.Advertising, Cognitive Processing, Communication, Pakistan, Children
