    Get PDF
Abstract- This paper discusses two new designs of reconfigurable perfectly-matched bandstop filter which is based on L-shape and ring resonator. The perfectly-matched bandstop filters can be reconfigured between allpass and bandstop response using PIN diodes as switching elements. The operating center frequency of these filters is at 1 GHz. The discussions of the conceptual perfectly-matched bandstop filters are included in this paper. The filters have been simulated for analysis where the effect of microstrip line and FR4 substrate has been taken into account. It is then further fabricated and measured for verification. The filters will then be compared in terms of s-parameter and size. Result shows good agreement between simulation and measurement

Introduction: Recurrent pregnancy with close child spacing can result from early resumption of sexual intercourse during the postpartum period. This would expose mothers to complications such as unsafe abortion, postpartum depression and premature birth. The aim of this study is to identify the factors associated with early resumption of sexual intercourse among postpartum Iban mothers. Methods: This is a cross sectional study conducted in Sri Aman Division, Sarawak between 1st July and 31st August 2006. A total of 265 Iban mothers agreed to participate in this study. They were interviewed face-to-face using structured questionnaire. Any postpartum sexual intercourse at 6 weeks or less is considered an early resumption of sexual intercourse. Results: Univariable analyses showed significant association between early sexual intercourse and use of contraceptive; mothers’ and husbands’ income; mothers who believed their husbands were sexually abstinent during their confinement period; mothers who stayed with their spouse after delivery; and those with high libido. Multivariable analysis showed only mothers’ and husbands’ income, use of contraceptive and those who believed their husbands practiced sexual abstinence during their confinement period were significantly associated with early resumption of sexual intercourse. Conclusions: Counselling on postpartum resumption of sexual intercourse among Iban mothers should focus on these determinants to ensure a more effective counselling outcome among Iban mothers

Simulation Analysis on the Potential Application of Matched Bandstop to Bandpass Filter in Filter Integrated SPDT Switch Design

This paper presents the simulation analysis on the potential application of matched bandstop to bandpass filter in filter integrated switch (FIS) design. The FIS consists of matched band-stop to bandpass filter integrated with single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) switch. The proposed design was demonstrated for 2.45 GHz applications in wireless data communication systems such as Bluetooth and Zigbee. The filter was based on L-shape lossy resonator, which can provide an absorptive feature. PIN diodes were used as switching elements for the SPDT switch and to reconfigure between band-stop and bandpass responses. Therefore, the key advantages of the proposed design are high isolation and good return loss at both ON- and OFF-state ports. As a result, the simulation showed the followings: higher than 10 dB of return loss and greater than 25 dB of isolation at the operation frequency

Directional felling within selective management system of Peninsular Malaysia: comparison between current and extended techniques

    Get PDF
Directional felling has been implemented in Peninsular Malaysia as part of the Selective Management System (SMS) to obtain optimum yield from the forest resources while reducing damage to the environment and residual trees. Some questions regarding its effectiveness have been questioned a few times, resulting in a joint research project at Ulu Jelai Forest Reserve, Pahang, Malaysia to compare between the current directional felling technique and the new (extended) techniques, in terms of accuracy of tree felling, volume of felling logs, expected damage on residual trees, and time taken for tree felling. For this study, 38 trees were felled with the current and extended techniques. By using the extended technique, 91.3% of the trees were felled within the 0°-5° range, and 100% within the 0°-10° range, compared to 28.01% (within the 0°-5° range) using the current technique. The extended technique also recorded higher volume recovery (14% higher) and lower damage on the residual trees by almost 50%. However, the extended technique took longer time, i.e. 4.56 minutes per tree, as compared to 2.50 minutes. The main contributor to the difference is the presence of gauge cut in the extended technique. Generally, the studies suggest that the extended technique is preferred as it is safer to the feller and surrounding people, while reducing the collateral damage on the harvested trees, as well as the residual trees

    Get PDF
Renewable energy is an energy which is freely available in nature such as winds and solar energy. It plays a critical role in greening the energy sector as these sources of energy produce little or no pollution to environment. This paper will focus on capability of renewable energy (wind and solar) in generating power for offshore application. Data of wind speeds and solar irradiation that are available around SHELL Sabah Water Platform for every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day, for a period of one year are provided by SHELL Sarawak Sdn. Bhd. The suitable wind turbine and photovoltaic panel that are able to give a high output and higher reliability during operation period are selected by using the tabulated data. The highest power output generated using single wind energy application is equal to 492 kW while for solar energy application is equal to 20 kW. Using the calculated data, the feasibility of renewable energy is then determined based on the platform energy demand

Integrating multiple devices into one single device is an effective method to reduce circuit size, mismatching loss, and fabrication cost. Radio frequency (RF) and microwave device integrated with filter have become a popular design concept in the recent years. In this paper, an overview of the filter integrated switch (FIS) for RF and microwave applications is presented based on previously published studies and research journals starting from 2006 until 2016. This paper also emphasizes the use of previous and current development of filter integrated switches which mainly covers the fundamental concept on the FIS, the research trends in designs and developments. At the end, this paper reports on the variety of applications that can greatly benefit from FIS and some challenges and factors that need to be considered in designing and development of filter integrated switches

Transition of Care in Paediatric Surgery: Current practices and perspectives of paediatric surgeons in Malaysia

Objectives: Transition of care (TOC) from paediatric to adult care is still at an early stage in Malaysia. This study aimed to explore current practices and perspectives regarding TOC among paediatric surgeons in Malaysia. Methods: This study was carried out between June and December 2017. All 48 paediatric surgeons currently working in Malaysia were invited to participate in a questionnaire-based survey to assess demographic characteristics and practices and perspectives regarding TOC. Results: A total of 38 paediatric surgeons participated in the survey (response rate: 79.2%). Overall, 97.4% did not have an organised TOC model in their institution, with most (65.8%) caring for paediatric patients with complex surgical conditions until adulthood. Although the majority (86.8%) felt that care should be transitioned to adult surgeons with appropriate credentials, most surgeons (84.2%) nevertheless preferred to be involved in the management of adolescent patients after transition. However, there was no consensus regarding the most suitable age to begin the transition. Years of experience as a paediatric surgeon and place of practice did not affect overall TOC practice scores (P >0.050 each). The presence of adult comorbidities was considered the most common reason to initiate TOC (81.6%), while the lack of TOC guidelines was perceived to be the greatest barrier (84.2%). Conclusion: This study provides a better understanding of TOC from the point of view of paediatric surgeons in Malaysia. However, further studies involving other stakeholders (i.e. patients and adult surgeons) are needed to help formulate a suitable and successful TOC model in this setting. Keywords: Transition to Adult Care; Pediatrics; Adolescents; Surgery; Attitudes; Professional Practice; Malaysia

In the present work, nanoparticles of multiferroic bismuth ferrites (BiFeO3) were synthesized via a simple thermal treatment method. BiFeO3 was prepared from an aqueous solution containing bismuth nitrate and iron nitrate as starting materials, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as a capping agent and nitric acid to dissolve the bismuth nitrate, respectively. It is followed by thermal treatment at various calcination temperatures at 350, 450 and 550 °C. The samples were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. XRD results indicate that the samples, calcined at 350, 450 and 550 °C, crystalized in rhombohedral crystal structure (space group R3c). The crystallinity of samples increased with increasing calcination temperature. Morphology study using TEM confirmed the growth of BiFeO3 nanoparticles with the average particle’s size increases from ~30 nm up to ~80 nm with the increasing of calcination temperature from 350 to 550 °C. Magnetic saturation Ms, of samples decreased from 2.15 to 0.25 emu/g while the coercivity Hc, increased from 54.41 to 272 G when the calcination temperature increased from 350 to 550 °C. ESR revealed increment of g-factor value from 2.14 to 2.64 and peak-to-peak linewidth from 129.33 to 201.61 Oe with the increasing of calcination temperature from 350 to 550 °C. The results demonstrate that by using thermal treatment method, the BiFeO3 nanoparticles can be obtained at low temperature, i.e. 350 °C
