    Human health outcomes of a restored ecological balance in African agro-landscapes

    Biodiversity loss and invasive species are exacting negative economic, environmental and societal impacts. While the monetary aspects of species invasion have been well-assessed, their impacts on human and social livelihood outcomes routinely remain obscure. Here, we empirically demonstrate several important human health and demographic consequences of a 1970s invasive pest species of cassava across sub-Saharan Africa. Pest-induced crop loss in 18 African countries relying heavily on cassava as a staple inflicted cascading effects on human birth rate (−6%) and adult mortality (+4%) over the span of a decade. The 1981 scientifically-guided release of the specialist parasitic wasp Anagyrus lopezi restored cassava yields, thus reconstituting food security in these agricultural systems and enabling parallel improvements in human health indices. Our analysis shows how agricultural performance can influence health and demographic outcomes, and accentuates how deliberate efforts to safeguard agro-ecological functions and resilience could be important during times of global environmental change

    Experimental and numerical studies of friction-induced vibration and noise and the effects of groove-textured surfaces

    An experimental and numerical study of friction-induced vibration and noise of a system composed of an elastic ball sliding over a groove-textured surface was performed. The experimental results showed that the impact between the ball and the edges of the grooves may significantly suppress the generation of high frequency components of acceleration and reduce the friction noise. Groove-textured surfaces with a specific dimensional parameter showed a good potential in reducing squeal. To model and understand this noise phenomenon, both the complex eigenvalue and dynamic transient analysis were performed. The dynamic transient analysis for the cases of groove-textured surface with/without filleted edges validated the role of the impact between the ball and the groove edges. Furthermore, a self-excited vibration model with three degrees of freedom was proposed to capture the basic features of the friction system. A small contact angle between the ball and the groove edges, corresponding to the relatively small groove width used in this study, would not cause any instability of the system

    Prolonged Application of High Fluid Shear to Chondrocytes Recapitulates Gene Expression Profiles Associated with Osteoarthritis

    BACKGROUND: Excessive mechanical loading of articular cartilage producing hydrostatic stress, tensile strain and fluid flow leads to irreversible cartilage erosion and osteoarthritic (OA) disease. Since application of high fluid shear to chondrocytes recapitulates some of the earmarks of OA, we aimed to screen the gene expression profiles of shear-activated chondrocytes and assess potential similarities with OA chondrocytes. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using a cDNA microarray technology, we screened the differentially-regulated genes in human T/C-28a2 chondrocytes subjected to high fluid shear (20 dyn/cm(2)) for 48 h and 72 h relative to static controls. Confirmation of the expression patterns of select genes was obtained by qRT-PCR. Using significance analysis of microarrays with a 5% false discovery rate, 71 and 60 non-redundant transcripts were identified to be ≥2-fold up-regulated and ≤0.6-fold down-regulated, respectively, in sheared chondrocytes. Published data sets indicate that 42 of these genes, which are related to extracellular matrix/degradation, cell proliferation/differentiation, inflammation and cell survival/death, are differentially-regulated in OA chondrocytes. In view of the pivotal role of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in the pathogenesis and/or progression of OA in vivo and regulation of shear-induced inflammation and apoptosis in vitro, we identified a collection of genes that are either up- or down-regulated by shear-induced COX-2. COX-2 and L-prostaglandin D synthase (L-PGDS) induce reactive oxygen species production, and negatively regulate genes of the histone and cell cycle families, which may play a critical role in chondrocyte death. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Prolonged application of high fluid shear stress to chondrocytes recapitulates gene expression profiles associated with osteoarthritis. Our data suggest a potential link between exposure of chondrocytes/cartilage to abnormal mechanical loading and the pathogenesis/progression of OA

    Monodisperse α-Fe2O3 Mesoporous Microspheres: One-Step NaCl-Assisted Microwave-Solvothermal Preparation, Size Control and Photocatalytic Property

    A simple one-step NaCl-assisted microwave-solvothermal method has been developed for the preparation of monodisperse α-Fe2O3 mesoporous microspheres. In this approach, Fe(NO3)3 · 9H2O is used as the iron source, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) acts as a surfactant in the presence of NaCl in mixed solvents of H2O and ethanol. Under the present experimental conditions, monodisperse α-Fe2O3 mesoporous microspheres can form via oriented attachment of α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals. One of the advantages of this method is that the size of α-Fe2O3 mesoporous microspheres can be adjusted in the range from ca. 170 to ca. 260 nm by changing the experimental parameters. High photocatalytic activities in the degradation of salicylic acid are observed for α-Fe2O3 mesoporous microspheres with different specific surface areas

    THE IMPACT OF DIETARY PROTEIN OR AMINO ACID SUPPLEMENTATION ON MUSCLE MASS AND STRENGTH IN ELDERLY PEOPLE: INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPANT DATA AND META-ANALYSIS OF RCT’S

    Objectives Increasing protein or amino acid intake has been promoted as a promising strategy to increase muscle mass and strength in elderly people, however, long-term intervention studies show inconsistent findings. Therefore, we aim to determine the impact of protein or amino acid supplementation compared to placebo on muscle mass and strength in older adults by combining the results from published trials in a metaanalysis and pooled individual participant data analysis. Design We searched Medline and Cochrane databases and performed a meta-analysis on eight available trials on the effect of protein or amino acid supplementation on muscle mass and strength in older adults. Furthermore, we pooled individual data of six of these randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials. The main outcomes were change in lean body mass and change in muscle strength for both the meta-analysis and the pooled analysis. Results The meta-analysis of eight studies (n=557) showed no significant positive effects of protein or amino acid supplementation on lean body mass (mean difference: 0.014 kg: 95% CI -0.152; 0.18), leg press strength (mean difference: 2.26 kg: 95% CI -0.56; 5.08), leg extension strength (mean difference: 0.75 kg: 95% CI: -1.96, 3.47) or handgrip strength (mean difference: -0.002 kg: 95% CI -0.182; 0.179). Likewise, the pooled analysis showed no significant difference between protein and placebo treatment on lean body mass (n=412: p=0.78), leg press strength (n=121: p=0.50), leg extension strength (n=121: p=0.16) and handgrip strength (n=318: p=0.37). Conclusions There is currently no evidence to suggest that protein or amino acid supplementation without concomitant nutritional or exercise interventions increases muscle mass or strength in predominantly healthy elderly people
