Absorption spectra and chirality of single-walled 4 Γ carbon nanotubes
Absorption spectrum of recently discovered single-walled 4 Γ
carbon nanotubes is measured. The semiempirical PM3 localized-density-matrix method is employed to evaluate the absorption spectra of three possible 4 Γ
single-walled carbon nanotubes, (3,3), (4,2), and (5,0). Both experimental and calculated results reveal that these nanotubes have finite optical gaps and strong anisotropic optical responses. When the electric field is perpendicular to the nanotubes, they are transparent to visible lights; and this is confirmed and explained by the calculations. Compared to the measured absorption spectrum, calculated absorption spectra are used to determine the chirality of the nanotubes synthesized in the channels of porous zeolites. Analytical study of lateral thermal buckling for subsea pipelines with sleeper
Unburied subsea pipelines operating under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions tend to relieve their axial compressive force by forming lateral buckles. Uncontrolled lateral buckling may lead to pipeline failure. In order to control lateral buckling, a sleeper is often employed as a buckle-initiation technique. In this study, analytical solutions of lateral buckling for unburied subsea pipelines with sleeper are derived. An energy analysis is employed to investigate the stability of the buckled pipeline. The influence of sleeper height and sleeper friction on pipeline buckled configurations and typical lateral buckling behaviour is illustrated and analysed. The results are shown to be in very good agreement with experimental data in the literature. We also discuss the effect of imperfections and conduct an error analysis of one of the main assumptions of the proposed analytical method. Our results show that increasing the height of the sleeper or decreasing the friction between pipeline and sleeper can all be used to decrease the minimum critical temperature difference. However, only the sleeper height is effective in substantially reducing the maximum compressive stress
Carbon nanotubes: are they dispersed or dissolved in liquids?
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) constitute a novel class of nanomaterials with remarkable applications in diverse domains. However, the main intrincsic problem of CNTs is their insolubility or very poor solubility in most of the common solvents. The basic key question here is: are carbon nanotubes dissolved or dispersed in liquids, specifically in water? When analyzing the scientific research articles published in various leading journals, we found that many researchers confused between "dispersion" and "solubilization" and use the terms interchangeably, particularly when stating the interaction of CNTs with liquids. In this article, we address this fundamental issue to give basic insight specifically to the researchers who are working with CNTs as well asgenerally to scientists who deal with nano-related research domains
Electric Field-Tuned Topological Phase Transition in Ultra-Thin Na3Bi - Towards a Topological Transistor
The electric field induced quantum phase transition from topological to
conventional insulator has been proposed as the basis of a topological field
effect transistor [1-4]. In this scheme an electric field can switch 'on' the
ballistic flow of charge and spin along dissipationless edges of the
two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin Hall insulator [5-9], and when 'off' is a
conventional insulator with no conductive channels. Such as topological
transistor is promising for low-energy logic circuits [4], which would
necessitate electric field-switched materials with conventional and topological
bandgaps much greater than room temperature, significantly greater than
proposed to date [6-8]. Topological Dirac semimetals(TDS) are promising systems
in which to look for topological field-effect switching, as they lie at the
boundary between conventional and topological phases [3,10-16]. Here we use
scanning probe microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and angle-resolved
photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) to show that mono- and bilayer films of TDS
Na3Bi [3,17] are 2D topological insulators with bulk bandgaps >400 meV in the
absence of electric field. Upon application of electric field by doping with
potassium or by close approach of the STM tip, the bandgap can be completely
closed then re-opened with conventional gap greater than 100 meV. The large
bandgaps in both the conventional and quantum spin Hall phases, much greater
than the thermal energy kT = 25 meV at room temperature, suggest that ultrathin
Na3Bi is suitable for room temperature topological transistor operation
Structure and Photoluminescent Properties of ZnO Encapsulated in Mesoporous Silica SBA-15 Fabricated by Two-Solvent Strategy
The two-solvent method was employed to prepare ZnO encapsulated in mesoporous silica (ZnO/SBA-15). The prepared ZnO/SBA-15 samples have been studied by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorptionβdesorption isotherm, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The ZnO/SBA-15 nanocomposite has the ordered hexagonal mesostructure of SBA-15. ZnO clusters of a high loading are distributed in the channels of SBA-15. Photoluminescence spectra show the UV emission band around 368 nm, the violet emission around 420 nm, and the blue emission around 457 nm. The UV emission is attributed to band-edge emission of ZnO. The violet emission results from the oxygen vacancies on the ZnOβSiO2interface traps. The blue emission is from the oxygen vacancies or interstitial zinc ions of ZnO. The UV emission and blue emission show a blue-shift phenomenon due to quantum-confinement-induced energy gap enhancement of ZnO clusters. The ZnO clusters encapsulated in SBA-15 can be used as light-emitting diodes and ultraviolet nanolasers

Disparities and risks of sexually transmissible infections among men who have sex with men in China: a meta-analysis and data synthesis.
BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Hepatitis B and C virus, are emerging public health risks in China, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aims to assess the magnitude and risks of STIs among Chinese MSM. METHODS: Chinese and English peer-reviewed articles were searched in five electronic databases from January 2000 to February 2013. Pooled prevalence estimates for each STI infection were calculated using meta-analysis. Infection risks of STIs in MSM, HIV-positive MSM and male sex workers (MSW) were obtained. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO. RESULTS: Eighty-eight articles (11 in English and 77 in Chinese) investigating 35,203 MSM in 28 provinces were included in this review. The prevalence levels of STIs among MSM were 6.3% (95% CI: 3.5-11.0%) for chlamydia, 1.5% (0.7-2.9%) for genital wart, 1.9% (1.3-2.7%) for gonorrhoea, 8.9% (7.8-10.2%) for hepatitis B (HBV), 1.2% (1.0-1.6%) for hepatitis C (HCV), 66.3% (57.4-74.1%) for human papillomavirus (HPV), 10.6% (6.2-17.6%) for herpes simplex virus (HSV-2) and 4.3% (3.2-5.8%) for Ureaplasma urealyticum. HIV-positive MSM have consistently higher odds of all these infections than the broader MSM population. As a subgroup of MSM, MSW were 2.5 (1.4-4.7), 5.7 (2.7-12.3), and 2.2 (1.4-3.7) times more likely to be infected with chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HCV than the broader MSM population, respectively. CONCLUSION: Prevalence levels of STIs among MSW were significantly higher than the broader MSM population. Co-infection of HIV and STIs were prevalent among Chinese MSM. Integration of HIV and STIs healthcare and surveillance systems is essential in providing effective HIV/STIs preventive measures and treatments. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO NO: CRD42013003721
