A REAL TIME MONITORING MODEL OF THE CALCIUM CARBONATE FOULING INDUCTION PERIOD BASED ON THE CONDUCTANCE TITRATION

    Get PDF
A new method has been developed to monitor the calcium carbonate fouling induction period (CCFIP) in real time. Based on the conductance titration, this paper investigated the forming process of CCFIP by a staticdynamic combined simulation experiment unit. With the help of titration analysis (that is titrimetry), an accurate definition of CCFIP and the corresponding real time monitoring model were built up. The investigation results show that the proposed model applies not only to measure the CCFIP in real time, but also applies to an investigation of the influence of various factors on the CCFIP

    Multi-SNP mediation intersection-union test

Tens of thousands of reproducibly identified GWAS (Genome-Wide Association Studies) variants, with the vast majority falling in non-coding regions resulting in no eventual protein products, call urgently for mechanistic interpretations. Although numerous methods exist, there are few, if any methods, for simultaneously testing the mediation effects of multiple correlated SNPs via some mediator (e.g. the expression of a gene in the neighborhood) on phenotypic outcome. We propose multi-SNP mediation intersection-union test (SMUT) to fill in this methodological gap. Our extensive simulations demonstrate the validity of SMUT as well as substantial, up to 92%, power gains over alternative methods. In addition, SMUT confirmed known mediators in a real dataset of Finns for plasma adiponectin level, which were missed by many alternative methods. We believe SMUT will become a useful tool to generate mechanistic hypotheses underlying GWAS variants, facilitating functional follow-up

    A study of charged kappa in J/ψ→K±Ksπ∓π0J/\psi \to K^{\pm} K_s \pi^{\mp} \pi^0

Based on 58×10658 \times 10^6 J/ψJ/\psi events collected by BESII, the decay J/ψ→K±Ksπ∓π0J/\psi \to K^{\pm} K_s \pi^{\mp} \pi^0 is studied. In the invariant mass spectrum recoiling against the charged K∗(892)±K^*(892)^{\pm}, the charged κ\kappa particle is found as a low mass enhancement. If a Breit-Wigner function of constant width is used to parameterize the kappa, its pole locates at (849±77−14+18)−i(256±40−22+46)(849 \pm 77 ^{+18}_{-14}) -i (256 \pm 40 ^{+46}_{-22}) MeV/c2c^2. Also in this channel, the decay J/ψ→K∗(892)+K∗(892)−J/\psi \to K^*(892)^+ K^*(892)^- is observed for the first time. Its branching ratio is (1.00±0.19−0.32+0.11)×10−3(1.00 \pm 0.19 ^{+0.11}_{-0.32}) \times 10^{-3}.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

Tidal Dwarf Galaxies at Intermediate Redshifts

We present the first attempt at measuring the production rate of tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) and estimating their contribution to the overall dwarf population. Using HST/ACS deep imaging data from GOODS and GEMS surveys in conjunction with photometric redshifts from COMBO-17 survey, we performed a morphological analysis for a sample of merging/interacting galaxies in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South and identified tidal dwarf candidates in the rest-frame optical bands. We estimated a production rate about 1.4 {\times} 10^{-5} per Gyr per comoving volume for long-lived TDGs with stellar mass 3 {\times} 10^{8-9} solar mass at 0.5<z<1.1. Together with galaxy merger rates and TDG survival rate from the literature, our results suggest that only a marginal fraction (less than 10%) of dwarf galaxies in the local universe could be tidally-originated. TDGs in our sample are on average bluer than their host galaxies in the optical. Stellar population modelling of optical to near-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for two TDGs favors a burst component with age 400/200 Myr and stellar mass 40%/26% of the total, indicating that a young stellar population newly formed in TDGs. This is consistent with the episodic star formation histories found for nearby TDGs.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc

Inferring Regulatory Networks From Mixed Observational Data Using Directed Acyclic Graphs

    Get PDF
Construction of regulatory networks using cross-sectional expression profiling of genes is desired, but challenging. The Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) provides a general framework to infer causal effects from observational data. However, most existing DAG methods assume that all nodes follow the same type of distribution, which prohibit a joint modeling of continuous gene expression and categorical variables. We present a new mixed DAG (mDAG) algorithm to infer the regulatory pathway from mixed observational data containing both continuous variables (e.g. expression of genes) and categorical variables (e.g. categorical phenotypes or single nucleotide polymorphisms). Our method can identify upstream causal factors and downstream effectors closely linked to a variable and generate hypotheses for causal direction of regulatory pathways. We propose a new permutation method to test the conditional independence of variables of mixed types, which is the key for mDAG. We also utilize an L1 regularization in mDAG to ensure it can recover a large sparse DAG with limited sample size. We demonstrate through extensive simulations that mDAG outperforms two well-known methods in recovering the true underlying DAG. We apply mDAG to a cross-sectional immunological study of Chlamydia trachomatis infection and successfully infer the regularity network of cytokines. We also apply mDAG to a large cohort study, generating sensible mechanistic hypotheses underlying plasma adiponectin level. By analyzing the data sets of 17.3, 6.5 and 1.0 pb−1^{-1} taken, respectively, at s=3.773\sqrt s= 3.773, 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV with the BES-II detector at the BEPC collider, we measure the observed cross sections for e+e−→π+π−π0π0e^+e^-\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0\pi^0, K+K−π0π0K^+K^-\pi^0\pi^0, 2(π+π−π0)2(\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0), K+K−π+π−π0π0K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0\pi^0 and 3(π+π−)π0π03(\pi^+\pi^-)\pi^0\pi^0 at the three energy points. Based on these cross sections we set the upper limits on the observed cross sections and the branching fractions for ψ(3770)\psi(3770) decay into these final states at 90% C.L..Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

Consistent segment-wise matching with multi-layer graphs

    Get PDF
Segment-wise matching is an important problem for higher-level understanding of shapes and geometry analysis. Many existing segment-wise matching techniques assume perfect segmentation, and would suffer from imperfect or over-segmentation inputs. To handle this shortcoming, we propose a multi-layer graph (MLG) to represent possible partially merged segments of input shape. We adapt the diffusion pruning technique on the MLGs to find high quality segment-wise matching. Experimental results on man-made shapes demonstrate the effectiveness of our method

    The σ\sigma pole in J/ψ→ωπ+π−J/\psi \to \omega \pi^+ \pi^-

Using a sample of 58 million J/ψJ/\psi events recorded in the BESII detector, the decay J/ψ→ωπ+π−J/\psi \to \omega \pi^+ \pi^- is studied. There are conspicuous ωf2(1270)\omega f_2(1270) and b1(1235)πb_1(1235)\pi signals. At low ππ\pi \pi mass, a large broad peak due to the σ\sigma is observed, and its pole position is determined to be (541±39)(541 \pm 39) - ii (252±42)(252 \pm 42) MeV from the mean of six analyses. The errors are dominated by the systematic errors.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PL

    The absolute branching fractions for the decays D0→K−e+νeD^0 \to K^-e ^+\nu_e and D0→π−e+νeD^0 \to \pi^-e^+\nu_e are determined using 7584±198±3417584\pm 198 \pm 341 singly tagged Dˉ0\bar D^0 sample from the data collected around 3.773 GeV with the BES-II detector at the BEPC. In the system recoiling against the singly tagged Dˉ0\bar D^0 meson, 104.0±10.9104.0\pm 10.9 events for D0→K−e+νeD^0 \to K^-e ^+\nu_e and 9.0±3.69.0 \pm 3.6 events for D0→π−e+νeD^0 \to \pi^-e^+\nu_e decays are observed. Those yield the absolute branching fractions to be BF(D0→K−e+νe)=(3.82±0.40±0.27)BF(D^0 \to K^-e^+\nu_e)=(3.82 \pm 0.40\pm 0.27)% and BF(D0→π−e+νe)=(0.33±0.13±0.03)BF(D^0 \to \pi^-e^+\nu_e)=(0.33 \pm 0.13\pm 0.03)%. The vector form factors are determined to be ∣f+K(0)∣=0.78±0.04±0.03|f^K_+(0)| = 0.78 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.03 and ∣f+π(0)∣=0.73±0.14±0.06|f^{\pi}_+(0)| = 0.73 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.06. The ratio of the two form factors is measured to be ∣f+π(0)/f+K(0)∣=0.93±0.19±0.07|f^{\pi}_+(0)/f^K_+(0)|= 0.93 \pm 0.19 \pm 0.07.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
