    Riding Circuit: Bringing the Law to Those Who Need It

    In this article, I will first look at how various state Access to Justice Commissions in the United States are addressing self-represented litigants\u27 ability to access and navigate the civil court system. I review various projects that attempt to make legal forms and processes more understandable to the public. I also discuss the role of law librarians, and how they bring a working understanding of the problems and missteps that self-represented litigants face first-hand. I argue for better inclusion of these information professionals in state commissions and in various outreach programs to improve the quality of the legal information provided to the public for better outcomes both in and outside of a courtroom. Next, I will review some innovative models of providing access to justice in different jurisdictions that may meet one or more of the needs found in under-served populations. I will also discuss how a radical collaboration of diverse professionals can ride circuit to provide both preventive and just in time legal and social services to people in need

    Chemical investigation of a biologically active schinus molle L. leaf extract

    The pepper tree Schinus molle L. is an evergreen ornamental plant belonging to the Anacardiaceae family, native to South America and widespread throughout the world. It has biological activities and is used in folk medicine. This paper aims to contribute to a deeper knowledge of its chemical composition and biological properties. S. molle leaf extracts were obtained by sequential extraction with solvents of different polarities and subsequently tested on the HL-60 human leukaemia cell line to define a possible cytotoxic activity. Among the investigated extracts, the petroleum ether extract revealed a high cytotoxic activity, and its chemical composition was further investigated. By a silica column chromatography, eight fractions were obtained, and their compositions were determined by GC-MS analysis.     Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration in Japanese Akita dogs: a survey

    Low serum level of vitamin D has been linked to numerous diseases. The Akita breed of dog shows a high incidence of immune-mediated diseases such as uveodermatologic (UVD) syndrome and sebaceous adenitis (SA). Furthermore, in Japanese Akita dogs, skin depigmentation often appears after birth at different ages, in healthy dogs, and without any other symptoms. In humans poliosis is associated to low vitamin D level. The aim of this survey was to evaluate serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels in Japanese Akita dogs. One hundred and three Akita blood samples were collected for the 25(OH)D evaluation. Age, sex, current disease, presence and location of skin depigmentation, and diet were reported on a medical record. Based on history and clinical examination, dogs were classified according their health status as healthy (HE) or pathological (PA). The overall mean of 25(OH)D concentration was 82.42 ± 26.14 ng/mL, whereas the concentrations in the healthy dogs were significantly higher (84.90 ± 3.36 ng/mL) in comparison with the dogs with diseases (72.13 ± 4.09 ng/mL) (P < 0.01). In this study, the depigmented healthy dogs showed low level of 25(OH)D and very similar to the sick group. The appearance of depigmented areas associated with low levels of vitamin D could be considered as an alert sign in Akitas as well as in humans. However, clinical trials should also be carried out to establish whether vitamin D supplementation could be an effective preventive treatment to limit the onset of immune-mediated diseases in Japanese Akita dogs

    Influence of energy cost and physical fitness on the preferred walking speed and gait variability in elderly women

    Typically gait speed decreases and gait variability increases in elderly. The aim of this study was to define the influence of energy cost of walking on gait speed and of health-related physical fitness on gait variability. Thirty healthy young and older women were recruited in the study. Energy cost of walking (NetCW) was analyzed with indirect calorimetry while a kinematic analysis was performed with an optoelectronic system to calculate gait variability (GV) during treadmill walking at different speeds. Gait speed was defined as the preferred walking speed (PWS) of the subject and health related physical fitness (HRPF) comprised body fat, strength, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory fitness. In healthy elderly women, the coefficient of variation of step width was found to be a better indicator of GV than stride time, stride length and double support coefficients of variation. GV was not affected by age allowing a high PWS. Furthermore, significant associations, adjusted for age, body mass index and number of falls, were identified neither between NetCW and the PWS, nor between HRPF and GV; only a significant association was found between hand-grip strength and gait stability. Findings highlighted the importance to evaluate hand-grip strength as an indicator of gait efficiency

    Dramatic mitigation of capacity decay and volume variation in vanadium redox flow batteries through modified preparation of electrolytes

    Electrolyte imbalance caused by the undesired vanadium-ions cross-over and water transport through the membrane is one of the main critical issues of vanadium redox flow batteries, leading to battery capacity loss and electrolytes volume variation. In this work, the evolution of discharged capacity and electrolyte volume variation were firstly investigated adopting commercial electrolyte for hundreds of charge-discharge cycles in vanadium redox flow batteries employing different membranes, varying thickness and equivalent weight. Subsequently, with the support of a 1D physics-based model, the origin of the main phenomena regulating capacity decay and volume variation has been identified and different modifications in the preparation of electrolytes have been proposed. Electrolytes characterized by an equal proton concentration between the two tanks at the beginning of cycling operation turned out to limit capacity decay, while increasing electrolyte proton concentration was effective also in the mitigation of volume variation. The most promising electrolyte preparation combined the effect of high proton concentration and null osmotic pressure gradient between the two tanks: compared to commercial electrolyte this preparation reduced the capacity decay from 47.7% to 20.9%, increased the coulombic efficiency from 96.2% to 98.9% and the energy one from 79.9% to 83.4%, and also implied a negligible volume variation during cycles. The effectiveness of this electrolyte preparation has been verified with different membranes, increasing the range of validity of the results, that could be thus applied in a real system regardless of the adopted membrane

    Il sistema scolastico del Friuli Venezia Giulia con lingua d’insegnamento slovena è regolato dalla normativa nazionale e da accordi internazionali. Vermegliano costituisce un caso-studio molto interessante poiché la maggioranza della popolazione scolastica è formata da alunni madrelingua italiana i cui genitori hanno deciso di dar loro un’istruzione nella lingua minoritaria locale. Questi alunni interagiscono quotidianamente con coetanei sloveni, frequentando assieme le lezioni in un ambiente in cui tutto il personale docente è sloveno. Parlare dell’identità di questi bambini significa mettere al centro del tema la loro collocazione tra due mondi: quello di origine (il mondo maggioritario italiano) e quello di accoglienza (il mondo della minoranza slovena locale)

    Kinematic evaluation of physical impairments of an elite Paralympic karateka

    Karate is a Japanese martial art that counts millions of practitioners worldwide and that is spreading also in Paralympic competitions, requiring accurate categories definition for disabled athletes. The aim of the study is to present kinematic data of an elite Paralympic karateka, in comparison with able-bodied athletes. The authors also aim to promote a better classification within the discipline, based on objective biomechanical evaluations of physical impairments. A male black belt Paralympic karateka (age: 36 y; body weight: 75.5 kg; height: 173 cm) with lower limbs impairments was evaluated. The athlete had been performing high level karate for 20 years before the disability took place. After the post-operative rehabilitation, he attended 3/4 sessions of para- karate training per week. He performed a standardized sequence of movements, involving a sequence of offensive and defensive techniques, (kata) from traditional Shotokan karate. Joints and body Center of Mass (CoM) kinematics were collected with an optoelectronic motion capture system and compared with those obtained in two groups of able-bodied (elite and amateurs) athletes from a previous study1. Knee angular range of motion (RoM) and peak angular velocity were obtained. Coordinates of CoM were estimated, using the Segmental Centroid Method2, along with CoM average velocity and acceleration. To assess differences between Paralympic karateka and able-bodied groups, the one-sample t-test was performed. The sequence performed by the karateka lasted more than in both able-bodied groups. CoM average velocity and acceleration decreased in comparison with elite karateka. Knees range of movement and peak angular velocity were similar to amateur but lower than elite athletes. Results show that the physical impairments negatively affected the function of lower limbs in the Paralympic athlete. Fundamental skills in karate elite performance (dynamic balance control and joint RoM and angular velocity) were reduced

    Whole-Transcriptome Analysis Unveils the Synchronized Activities of Genes for Fructans in Developing Tubers of the Jerusalem Artichoke

    Helianthus tuberosus L., known as the Jerusalem artichoke, is a hexaploid plant species, adapted to low-nutrient soils, that accumulates high levels of inulin in its tubers. Inulin is a fructose-based polysaccharide used either as dietary fiber or for the production of bioethanol. Key enzymes involved in inulin biosynthesis are well known. However, the gene networks underpinning tuber development and inulin accumulation in H. tuberous remain elusive. To fill this gap, we selected 6,365 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from an H. tuberosus library to set up a microarray platform and record their expression across three tuber developmental stages, when rhizomes start enlarging (T-0), at maximum tuber elongation rate (T-3), and at tuber physiological maturity (T-m), in "VR" and "K8-HS142"clones. The former was selected as an early tuberizing and the latter as a late-tuberizing clone. We quantified inulin and starch levels, and qRT-PCR confirmed the expression of critical genes accounting for inulin biosynthesis. The microarray analysis revealed that the differences in morphological and physiological traits between tubers of the two clones are genetically determined since T-0 and that is relatively low the number of differentially expressed ESTs across the stages shared between the clones (93). The expression of ESTs for sucrose:sucrose 1-fructosyltransferase (1-SST) and fructan:fructan 1-fructosyltransferase (1-FFT), the two critical genes for fructans polymerization, resulted to be temporarily synchronized and mirror the progress of inulin accumulation and stretching. The expression of ESTs for starch biosynthesis was insignificant throughout the developmental stages of the clones in line with the negligible level of starch into their mature tubers, where inulin was the dominant polysaccharide. Overall, our study disclosed candidate genes underpinning the development and storage of carbohydrates in the tubers of two H. tuberosus clones. A model according to which the steady-state levels of 1-SST and 1-FFT transcripts are developmentally controlled and might represent a limiting factor for inulin accumulation has been provided. Our finding may have significant repercussions for breeding clones with improved levels of inulin for food and chemical industry
