The role of risk modelling in the Great Britain transmission planning and operational standards

This paper presents three case studies of risk-based standards from Great Britain: the pre-liberalisation generation planning standard, the present method for setting operational reserve requirements, and the transmission network planning standard. These illustrate a number of key issues in developing planning and operational standards for wind, including: the benefits of risk-based standards in adapting to new circumstances; the importance of considering model assumptions carefully when interpreting risk calculations; the difficulty in calculating the cost of risk; and the need to account for uncertainty in system background. The transmission network planning standard is studied in particular detail, especially how the present combination of deterministic and probabilistic sections might evolve for use in a future power system with a very high renewable penetration

Methylomic profiling implicates cortical deregulation of ANK1 in Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by progressive neuropathology and cognitive decline. We performed a cross-tissue analysis of methylomic variation in AD using samples from four independent human post-mortem brain cohorts. We identified a differentially methylated region in the ankyrin 1 (ANK1) gene that was associated with neuropathology in the entorhinal cortex, a primary site of AD manifestation. This region was confirmed as being substantially hypermethylated in two other cortical regions (superior temporal gyrus and prefrontal cortex), but not in the cerebellum, a region largely protected from neurodegeneration in AD, or whole blood obtained pre-mortem from the same individuals. Neuropathology-associated ANK1 hypermethylation was subsequently confirmed in cortical samples from three independent brain cohorts. This study represents, to the best of our knowledge, the first epigenome-wide association study of AD employing a sequential replication design across multiple tissues and highlights the power of this approach for identifying methylomic variation associated with complex disease.US National Institutes of HealthAlzheimer's Research UKDepartment of Veterans Affair

Surto de intoxicação por sal em suínos em Santa Catarina

Descreve-se a ocorrência de surto de intoxicação por sal em suínos de duas propriedades, onde 70 porcos morreram. Soro de leite proveniente da salga de queijo era servido no cocho como única fonte hídrica aos animais. Não havia bebedouros nas instalações. Um dia após o fornecimento do soro, os porcos começaram a adoecer e apresentaram salivação excessiva, movimentos de pedalagem, opistótono e tremores cíclicos. Na necropsia, dois suínos apresentaram achatamento das circunvoluções do córtex telencefálico e um outro, edema no córtex telencefálico. Na histopatologia, observou-se necrose neuronal laminar difusa acentuada no córtex telencefálico, astrócitos de Alzheimer tipo II (AIIA), infiltrado multifocal perivascular de eosinófilos e linfócitos e edema perivascular. Outros achados incluíram marcação imuno-histoquímica fraca ou ausente para proteína glial fibrilar ácida (GFAP), mas intensa marcação positiva no citoplasma dos AIIA para S-100. As concentrações de sódio sérico e do líquor mensuradas nos porcos estudados foram de 140 e 156mmol/L, respectivamente
