    Nonlinear optical interactions of topological modes of photonic nanostructures

    Topological photonics aims to utilize topological photonic bands and corresponding edge modes to implement robust light manipulation. Importantly, topological photonics provide an ideal platform to study nonlinear interactions. In this talk, I will review some recent results regarding nonlinear interactions of one-way edge-modes in frequency mixing processes in topological photonic nanostructures. More specifically, I will discuss the band topology of 2D photonic crystals with hexagonal symmetry and demonstrate that SHG and THG can be implemented via one-way edge modes. Moreover, I will demonstrate that more exotic phenomena, such as slow-light enhancement of nonlinear interactions and harmonic generation upon interaction of backward-propagating edge modes can also be realized. Finally, FWM of topological plasmon modes of graphene plasmonic crystals and SHG upon interaction of valley-Hall topological modes of all-dielectric photonic crystals will be discussed

    Automatic first-arrival picking method based on an image connectivity algorithm and multiple time windows

    The use of a computer to automatically pick the first-arrival of a seismic signal is an operation that involves picking and screening the first arrival of the wave according to the criteria established in the manual picking process. To increase the picking accuracy for data with low-to-moderate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), we propose a new single-trace boundary detection algorithm. This algorithm includes three steps: (1) calculate the first-arrival characteristic values through multi time windows; (2) take the times corresponding to the maximum characteristic values given by different time windows as intermediate results; (3) compare the intermediate results: if the difference is too large, it is marked the time is abnormal, otherwise the average time of the intermediate results is taken as the first-arrival time. Using this energy boundary detection method, the characteristic values obtained are bi-directionally expanded to allow the use of the trace connectivity algorithm which is improved from the region growing method. Determining the connectivity between the first-arrival characteristic values is a way to simulate how the human eye discriminates true first arrivals. This method significantly improves the elimination of false or abnormal first-arrivals. Next, a small-step fitting algorithm is applied to the remaining first-arrival characteristic values to complete the calculation of the final characteristic values. Based on the retained first-arrival characteristic values, the missing values are assigned by interpolation. The characteristic values are mapped on the original record and finally the first-arrival picking is completed using a small time window. Theoretical results as well as the results obtained from real data demonstrate that the proposed automatic first-arrival picking method effectively improves the accuracy of the first-arrival picking. Finally, the new picking algorithm is presented more efficient than the energy ratio method, as well as cross-correlation method

    The hadron production in relativistic heavy ion collisions is well described by the quark combination model. The mixed ratios for various hadrons and the transverse momentum spectra for long-life hadrons are predicted and agree with recent RHIC data. The production rates for the pentaquarks Θ+\Theta ^+, Θ∗++\Theta ^{*++} and the di-baryon (ΩΩ)0+(\Omega\Omega)_{0^{+}} are estimated, neglecting the effect from the transition amplitude for constituent quarks to form an exotic state.Comment: The difference between our model and other combination models is clarified.     Multi-controller Based Software-Defined Networking: A Survey

    Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is a novel network paradigm that enables flexible management for networks. As the network size increases, the single centralized controller cannot meet the increasing demand for flow processing. Thus, the promising solution for SDN with large-scale networks is the multi-controller. In this paper, we present a compressive survey for multi-controller research in SDN. First, we introduce the overview of multi-controller, including the origin of multi-controller and its challenges. Then, we classify multi-controller research into four aspects (scalability, consistency, reliability, load balancing) depending on the process of implementing the multi-controller. Finally, we propose some relevant research issues to deal with in the future and conclude the multi-controller research

    You can't see what you can't see: Experimental evidence for how much relevant information may be missed due to Google's Web search personalisation

    The influence of Web search personalisation on professional knowledge work is an understudied area. Here we investigate how public sector officials self-assess their dependency on the Google Web search engine, whether they are aware of the potential impact of algorithmic biases on their ability to retrieve all relevant information, and how much relevant information may actually be missed due to Web search personalisation. We find that the majority of participants in our experimental study are neither aware that there is a potential problem nor do they have a strategy to mitigate the risk of missing relevant information when performing online searches. Most significantly, we provide empirical evidence that up to 20% of relevant information may be missed due to Web search personalisation. This work has significant implications for Web research by public sector professionals, who should be provided with training about the potential algorithmic biases that may affect their judgments and decision making, as well as clear guidelines how to minimise the risk of missing relevant information.Comment: paper submitted to the 11th Intl.     Probing the magnetic ground state of the molecular Dysprosium triangle

    We present zero field muon spin lattice relaxation measurements of a Dysprosium triangle molecular magnet. The local magnetic fields sensed by the implanted muons indicate the coexistence of static and dynamic internal magnetic fields below T∗ 35T^* ~35 K. Bulk magnetization and heat capacity measurements show no indication of magnetic ordering below this temperature. We attribute the static fields to the slow relaxation of the magnetization in the ground state of Dy3. The fluctuation time of the dynamic part of the field is estimated to be ~0.55 μ\mus at low temperaturesComment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
