    Trickster-Like Teachings in Tibetan Buddhism: Shortcuts towards Destroying Illusions

    Trickster-like Dharma teachings in Tibetan Buddhism behave as a kind of shortcuts in the approach to leading people along the path of enlightenment. This essay collects three such teachings of different levels towards destroying illusions, i.e., Buddha’s silence, Guru’s paradox, and Ego’s kleshas. They are necessary as “an ace up the sleeve” for Buddha to destruct disciples’ metaphysical quagmire, for Guru to lead community toward perfect transcendence, and for individuals to attain self-consciousness

    The influences of the galactic cosmic ray on the atmospheric ozone

    The relationship between the yearly variations of cosmic ray intensity and ozone in the atmosphere, and the ozone disturbance initiated by the Forbush decrease of 1965-1976 is analyzed. The data on cosmic ray intensity were selected from the records of the super neutron monitor at Deep River station and the ionization chamber at Beijing station. Ozone data were taken from Resolute (Canada), Bismark (N. Dakota, USA), Kagoshima (Japan), and Kodaikanal (India). The statistical results show that ozone is prominently modulated and disturbed by the 11 year variation and the Forbush decrease in the galactic cosmic ray

    Distinguishing RBL-like objects and XBL-like objects with the peak emission frequency of the overall energy spectrum

    We investigate quantitatively how the peak emission frequency of the overall energy spectrum is at work in distinguishing RBL-like and XBL-like objects. We employ the sample of Giommi et al. (1995) to study the distribution of BL Lacertae objects with various locations of the cutoff of the overall energy spectrum. We find that the sources with the cutoff located at lower frequency are indeed sited in the RBL region of the αroαox\alpha_{ro}-\alpha_{ox} plane, while those with the cutoff located at higher frequency are distributed in the XBL region. For a more quantitative study, we employ the BL Lacertae samples presented by Sambruna et al. (1996), where, the peak emission frequency, νp\nu _p, of each source is estimated by fitting the data with a parabolic function. In the plot of αrxlogνp\alpha_{rx}-\log \nu_p we find that, in the four different regions divided by the αrx=0.75\alpha_{rx}=0.75 line and the logνp=14.7\log \nu_p=14.7 line, all the RBL-like objects are inside the upper left region, while most XBL-like objects are within the lower right region. A few sources are located in the lower left region. No sources are in the upper right region. This result is rather quantitative. It provides an evidence supporting what Giommi et al. (1995) suggested: RBL-like and XBL-like objects can be distinguished by the difference of the peak emission frequency of the overall energy spectrum.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

    Hubble Diagram of Gamma-Rays Bursts calibrated with Gurzadyan-Xue Cosmology

    Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) being the most luminous among known cosmic objects carry an essential potential for cosmological studies if properly used as standard candles. In this paper we test with GRBs the cosmological predictions of the Gurzadyan-Xue (GX) model of dark energy, a novel theory that predicts, without any free parameters, the current vacuum fluctuation energy density close to the value inferred from the SNIa observations. We also compare the GX results with those predicted by the concordance scenario Λ\Lambda-CDM. According to the statistical approach by Schaefer (2007), the use of several empirical relations obtained from GRBs observables, after a consistent calibration for a specific model, enables one to probe current cosmological models. Based on this recently introduced method, we use the 69 GRBs sample collected by Schaefer (2007); and the most recently released SWIFT satellite data (Sakamoto et al. 2007) together with the 41 GRBs sample collected by Rizzuto et al. (2007), which has the more firmly determined redshifts. Both data samples span a distance scale up to redshift about 7. We show that the GX models are compatible with the Hubble diagram of the Schaefer (2007) 69 GRBs sample.
