Omitted Asymmetric Persistence and Conditional Heteroskedasticity

    Get PDF
We show that asymmetric persistence induces ARCH effects, but the LM-ARCH test has power against it. On the other hand, the test for asymmetric dynamics proposed by Koenker and Xiao (2004) has correct size under the presence of ARCH errors. These results suggest that the LM-ARCH and the Koenker-Xiao tests may be used in applied research as complementary tools.

A note on a theorem of Xiao Gang

In 1985 Xiao Gang proved that the bicanonical system of a complex surface SS of general type with p2(S)>2p_2(S)>2 is not composed of a pencil [Bull. Soc. Math. France, 113 (1985), 23--51]. When in the end of the 80's it was finally proven that 2KS| 2K_S| is base point free, whenever pg1p_g\geq 1, the part of this theorem concerning surfaces with pg1p_g\geq 1 became trivial. In this note a new proof of this theorem for surfaces with pg=0p_g=0 is presented.Comment: Latex, 4 page

Xiao (孝) – najtrwalsza z chińskich cnót i jej współczesne interpretacje

    Get PDF
The objective of this article is to analyse contemporary interpretations of the Chinese virtue called xiao. The author first describes the role and meaning of xiao (mostly translated to English as filial piety) in traditional Chinese culture and society. Then he analyses its contemporary interpretations in various sources, such as electronic media, state television programs, popular culture, and thought of contemporary Chinese philosophers. This analysis leads to the conclusion that the present-day notion of xiao differs from that existing in the past. The earlier notion placed a strong emphasis on obedience to parents’ wishes; nowadays this notion emphasizes concern about parents’ emotional wellbeing, while giving children a higher degree of independence

    Fuck revisited.

This paper is a follow up to the investigation of McEnery, Baker and Hardie (2000) into the use of the word fuck in spoken British English. Both that paper and this are based on the British National Corpus. However, at the time of writing in 2000, the analysis of fuck in the written BNC had not been completed, hence the 2000 paper focussed on spoken English alone. In doing so, it explored the way fuck varied with respect to a range of meta-data encoded in the spoken BNC, principally age, sex and social class. We have now explored the written section of the BNC, and have explored the distribution of fuck with respect to a subset of the metadata encoded in the written BNC, namely domain, author gender, author age, audience gender, audience age, audience level, reception status, medium of text and date of creation. As some of these features have clear analogues in the spoken BNC (most clearly age and sex) comparisons between the work presented here and the earlier work on spoken English will be presented wherever possible. Throughout, unless otherwise stated, references to the frequency of usage of features in spoken language are taken from McEnery, Baker and Hardie (ibid)

Filial Piety (xiao 孝) for the Contemporary and Global World

The relationships between children and parents seem to be one of the most urgent issues in the contemporary world, spanning from the United States and European countries to East Asian societies, as a consequence of the transformation of traditional family ethics, values and institutions brought about by the processes of modernization and globalization. The present paper aims to reveal the ways and problems of the application of xiao 孝 (filial piety) ethics in the contemporary Western and Chinese societies, as reflected in the works by a number of famous Western Protestant missionaries, religious philosophers, sinologists and present-day Lithuanian Sinology students, and counterbalance their views with the insights of contemporary Chinese sociologists. The place of xiao in the contemporary inter-cultural dialogue will be discussed from the point of view of dialogue between religions, theory and practice, Western and Chinese culture, traditional and modern societies and values. Namen tega prispevka je razkriti načine in probleme uporabe etike xiao 孝 (spoštovanja staršev) v sodobnih zahodnih in kitajski družbah, kar se odraža v delih številnih znanih zahodnih protestantskih misijonarjev, verskih filozofov, sinologov in današnjih litvanskih študentov sinologije, in jih primerja s spoznanji sodobnih kitajskih sociologov. O vlogi etike xiao v sodobnem medkulturnem dialogu se razpravlja z vidika dialoga med religijami, med teorijo in prakso, med zahodno in kitajsko kulturo, med tradicionalnimi in sodobnimi družbami in vrednotami.

Centralizers of normal subgroups and the ZZ^*-Theorem

Glauberman's ZZ^*-theorem and analogous statements for odd primes show that, for any prime pp and any finite group GG with Sylow pp-subgroup SS, the centre of G/Op(G)G/O_{p^\prime}(G) is determined by the fusion system FS(G)\mathcal{F}_S(G). Building on these results we show a statement that seems a priori more general: For any normal subgroup HH of GG with Op(H)=1O_{p^\prime}(H)=1, the centralizer CS(H)C_S(H) is expressed in terms of the fusion system FS(H)\mathcal{F}_S(H) and its normal subsystem induced by HH.Comment: 3 pages; to appear in the Journal of Algebr
