Unsupervised Feature Selection with Adaptive Structure Learning

The problem of feature selection has raised considerable interests in the past decade. Traditional unsupervised methods select the features which can faithfully preserve the intrinsic structures of data, where the intrinsic structures are estimated using all the input features of data. However, the estimated intrinsic structures are unreliable/inaccurate when the redundant and noisy features are not removed. Therefore, we face a dilemma here: one need the true structures of data to identify the informative features, and one need the informative features to accurately estimate the true structures of data. To address this, we propose a unified learning framework which performs structure learning and feature selection simultaneously. The structures are adaptively learned from the results of feature selection, and the informative features are reselected to preserve the refined structures of data. By leveraging the interactions between these two essential tasks, we are able to capture accurate structures and select more informative features. Experimental results on many benchmark data sets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms many state of the art unsupervised feature selection methods

Seasonal Herbage Accumulation of Different Dairy Pasture Types in Southern Australia

    Get PDF
Perennial ryegrass pastures, which are the mainstay of dairy feeding systems in southern Australia, are characterised by strong spring growth, little summer/autumn growth, and poor persistence. These limitations impose costs to farm businesses through the purchase of additional fodder to fill feed gaps, and regular re-sowing of pastures. The objective of the research reported here was to investigate the potential for alternative pasture types with different seasonal growth characteristics to improve the seasonal distribution of feed supply and overcome some of the limitations associated with perennial ryegrass

3D reconstruction of train accident scene based on monocular image

To help with making an emergency rescue plan for train accidents, a rapid 3D reconstruction method of train accident scene based on a monocular image was proposed. Taking two camera projection models for different application scenarios into consideration, the SIFT algorithm was introduced to extract and match image feature with the CAD model of an accident train. Geometric constraints between carriages were provided to transform the 3D reconstruction to solving a nonlinear least square problem with constraints, by which the position and pose of accident subjects were reduced at last. To quantitatively and qualitatively verify the calculation performance of this method, the mimicked train accident scene and real train accident scene were respectively used to carry out 3D reconstruction. The precise finite camera projection model was applied in the mimicked train accident scene to carry out offline calibration, and the stable pin-hole model was adopted in the real train accident scene to carry out auto calibration. Analysis result shows that through quantitative analysis of mimicked scene the maximal and average relative error of 8 nodes for measurement in reconstructing two carriages are 4.54% and 1.85% respectively. Through qualitative analysis of the real scene, the 3D reduction of position and pose for carriages can also be realized with combining the topographic information correction. The whole accident environmental panorama can be reduced visually with the help of 3D visualization engine. This method can also be used in developing emergency rescue electronic sand table for train accident analysis and safety education

We Use Molecular Dynamics to Determine the Mass Accommodation Coefficient (MAC) of Water Vapor Molecules Colliding with a Rapidly Moving Liquid-Vapor Interface. This Interface Mimics Those Present in Collapsing Vapor Bubbles that Are Characterized by Large Interfacial Velocities. We Find that at Room Temperature, the MAC is Generally Close to Unity, and Even with Interfaces Moving at 10 Km/s Velocity, It Has a Large Value of 0.79. using a Simplified Atomistic Fluid Model, We Explore the Consequences of Vapor Molecule Interfacial Collision Rules on Pressure, Temperature, and Density of a Vapor Subjected to an Incoming High-Velocity Liquid-Vapor Interface

A method for three-dimensional reconstruction of a train accident scene using photographs

Railway accidents that usually cause numerous property and life losses occurred in recent years all around the world. In general, resources such as financial supports and incident rescue programs are required to minimize the losses after an accident. Due to lack of comprehensive information collected from accident sites, most railway emergency management departments face a predicament in setting up rescue schemes. To tackle the issue, realistic three-dimensional virtual accident scene reconstruction technology is developed, which provides and visualises supplementary materials and information about a train accident and can offer assistance to emergency crews when making decisions. We propose a photo-based three-dimensional reconstruction framework of vehicles for measuring the positions and poses of carriages involved in an accident. We implement and examine two case studies to validate this reconstruction method, which performs well in the assigned tasks

Expression of polyhedrin-hEGF fusion protein in cultured cells and larvae of Bombyx mori

For mass production of human epidermal growth factor (hEGF), silkworm baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS) was adopted in this study. hEGF gene was in-frame fused with polyhedrin (Ph) gene under the control of Ph promoter and was used to co-transfect BmN cell with the modifiedBombyx mori baculovirus DNA to obtained recombinant virus. The ELISA showed a maximum expression on day 4 in larvae and pupae. Both cellular extracts and haemolymph of silkworm larvae infected with rBacPh-EGF could all support the proliferation of Balb/c 3T3 cell. The correspondingmaterials from BmN cell and silkworm larvae infected with wild virus also indicated a weak effect of upregulation on 3T3 cells proliferation. The animal study showed that both pupae infected with rBacPh-EGF virus and wild virus protected the gastric mucosa against ethanol-induced damage in rats, although the protection from pupae infected with wild virus was slightly weak. The mechanism is under investigatin

An extended view of the Pisces Overdensity from the SCUSS survey

SCUSS is a u-band photometric survey covering about 4000 square degree of the South Galactic Cap, reaching depths of up to 23 mag. By extending around 1.5 mag deeper than SDSS single-epoch u data, SCUSS is able to probe much a larger volume of the outer halo, i.e. with SCUSS data blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars can trace the outer halo of the Milky Way as far as 100-150 kpc. Utilizing this advantage we combine SCUSS u band with SDSS DR9 gri photometric bands to identify BHB stars and explore halo substructures. We confirm the existence of the Pisces overdensity, which is a structure in the outer halo (at around 80 kpc) that was discovered using RR Lyrae stars. For the first time we are able to determine its spatial extent, finding that it appears to be part of a stream with a clear distance gradient. The stream, which is ~5 degrees wide and stretches along ~25 degrees, consists of 20-30 BHBs with a total significance of around 6sigma over the background. Assuming we have detected the entire stream and that the progenitor has fully disrupted, then the number of BHBs suggests the original system was similar to smaller classical or a larger ultra-faint dwarf galaxy. On the other hand, if the progenitor still exists, it can be hunted for by reconstructing its orbit from the distance gradient of the stream. This new picture of the Pisces overdensity sheds new light on the origin of this intriguing system.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Ap
