    Double transverse spin asymmetry in the ppˉp^\uparrow\bar{p}^\uparrow Drell-Yan process from Sivers functions

    We show that the transverse double spin asymmetry (DSA) in the Drell-Yan process contributed only from the Sivers functions can be picked out by the weighting function QTM2(cos(ϕϕS1)cos(ϕϕS2)+3sin(ϕϕS1)sin(ϕϕS2))\frac{Q_T}{M^2}(\cos(\phi-\phi_{S_1})\cos(\phi-\phi_{S_2})+3\sin(\phi-\phi_{S_1})\sin(\phi-\phi_{S_2})). The asymmetry is proportional to the product of two Sivers functions from each hadron f1T(1)×f1T(1)f_{1T}^{\perp(1)}\times f_{1T}^{\perp (1)}. Using two sets of Sivers functions extracted from the semi-inclusive deeply elastic scattering data at HERMES, we estimate this asymmetry in the ppˉp^\uparrow\bar{p}^\uparrow Drell-Yan process which is possible to be performed in HESR at GSI. The prediction of DSA in the Drell-Yan process contributed by the function g_{1T}(x,\Vec k_T^2), which can be extracted by the weighting function QTM2(3cos(ϕϕS1)cos(ϕϕS2)+sin(ϕϕS1)sin(ϕϕS2))\frac{Q_T}{M^2}(3\cos(\phi-\phi_{S_1})\cos(\phi-\phi_{S_2})+\sin(\phi-\phi_{S_1})\sin(\phi-\phi_{S_2})), is also given at GSI.Comment: 6 latex pages, 2 figures, to appear in PR

    The spatial coverage of dairy cattle urine patches in an intensively grazed pasture system

    Accurate field data on the paddock area affected by cow urine depositions are critical to the estimation and modelling of nitrogen (N) losses and N management in grazed pasture systems. A new technique using survey-grade global positioning system (GPS) technology was developed to precisely measure the paddock spatial area coverage, diversity and distribution of dairy cattle urine patches in grazed paddocks over time. A 4-year study was conducted on the Lincoln University Dairy Farm (LUDF), Canterbury, New Zealand, from 2003 to 2007. Twelve field plots, each 100m² in area, were established on typical grazing areas of the farm. All urine and dung deposits within the plots were visually identified, the pasture response area (radius) measured and position marked with survey-grade GPS. The plots were grazed as part of the normal grazing rotation of the farm and urine and dung deposits measured at 12-week intervals. The data were collated using spatial (GIS) software and an assessment of annual urine patch coverage and spatial distribution was made. Grazing intensities ranged from 17645 to 30295 cow grazing h/ha/yr. Mean annual areas of urine patches ranged from 0·34 to 0·40m² (4-year mean 0·37±0·009m²), with small but significant variation between years and seasons. Mean annual urine patch numbers were 6240±124 patches/ha/yr. The mean proportional area coverage for a single sampling event or season was 0·058 and the mean proportional annual urine patch coverage was 0·232±0·0071. There was a strong linear relationship between annual cow grazing h/ha and urine patch numbers/ha (R²=0·69) and also annual urine patch area coverage (R²=0·77). Within the stocking densities observed in this study, an annual increase of 10 000 cow grazing h/ha increased urine patch numbers by 1800 urine patches/ha/yr and annual urine patch area coverage by 0·07.     Maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing and the small ratio of muon to tau mass

    We discuss the problem of the small ratio of muon mass to tau mass in a class of seesaw models where maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing is enforced through a μ\mu--τ\tau interchange symmetry. We introduce into those models an additional symmetry TT such that mμ=0m_\mu = 0 in the case of exact TT invariance. The symmetry TT may be softly broken in the Higgs potential, and one thus achieves mμmτm_\mu \ll m_\tau in a technically natural way.     Beam power scale-up in MEMS based multi-beam ion accelerators

    We report on the development of multi-beam RF linear ion accelerators that are formed from stacks of low cost wafers and describe the status of beam power scale-up using an array of 120 beams. The total argon ion current extracted from the 120-beamlet extraction column was 0.5 mA. The measured energy gain in each RF gap reached as high as 7.25 keV. We present a path of using this technology to achieve ion currents >1 mA and ion energies >100 keV for applications in materials processing

    Electro-elastic tuning of single particles in individual self-assembled quantum dots

    We investigate the effect of uniaxial stress on InGaAs quantum dots in a charge tunable device. Using Coulomb blockade and photoluminescence, we observe that significant tuning of single particle energies (~ -0.5 meV/MPa) leads to variable tuning of exciton energies (+18 to -0.9 micro-eV/MPa) under tensile stress. Modest tuning of the permanent dipole, Coulomb interaction and fine-structure splitting energies is also measured.     Minimal Mass Matrices for Dirac Neutrinos

    We consider the possibility of neutrinos being Dirac particles and study minimal mass matrices with as much zero entries as possible. We find that up to 5 zero entries are allowed. Those matrices predict one vanishing mass state, CP conservation and U_{e3} either zero or proportional to R, where R is the ratio of the solar and atmospheric \Delta m^2. Matrices containing 4 zeros can be classified in categories predicting U_{e3} = 0, U_{e3} \neq 0 but no CP violation or |U_{e3}| \neq 0 and possible CP violation. Some cases allow to set constraints on the neutrino masses. The characteristic value of U_{e3} capable of distinguishing some of the cases with non-trivial phenomenological consequences is about R/2 \sin 2 \theta_{12}. Matrices containing 3 and less zero entries imply (with a few exceptions) no correlation for the observables. We outline models leading to the textures based on the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism or the non-Abelian discrete symmetry D_4 \times Z_2.Comment: 32 pages, 3 figures. Comments and references added.     Does higher gadolinium concentration play a role in the morphologic assessment of brain tumors? Results of a multicenter intraindividual crossover comparison of gadobutrol versus gadobenate dimeglumine (the MERIT Study).

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Gadobenate dimeglumine has proved advantageous compared with other gadolinium-based contrast agents for contrast-enhanced brain MR imaging. Gadobutrol is a more highly concentrated agent (1.0 mol/L). This study intraindividually compared 0.1-mmol/kg doses of these agents for qualitative and quantitative evaluation of brain tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult patients with suspected or known brain tumors underwent 2 identical MR imaging examinations at 1.5T, 1 with gadobenate dimeglumine and the other with gadobutrol, both at a dose of 0.1-mmol/kg body weight. The agents were injected in randomized order separated by 3–14 days. Imaging sequences and acquisition timing were identical for the 2 examinations. Three blinded readers evaluated images qualitatively for diagnostic information (lesion extent, delineation, morphology, enhancement, global preference) and quantitatively for CNR and LBR. RESULTS: One hundred fourteen of 123 enrolled patients successfully underwent both examinations. Final diagnoses were intra-axial tumors, metastases, extra-axial tumors, "other" tumors, and "nontumor" (49, 46, 8, 7, and 4 subjects, respectively). Readers 1, 2, and 3 demonstrated preference for gadobenate dimeglumine in 46 (40.7%), 54 (47.4%), and 49 (43.0%) patients, respectively, compared with 6, 7, and 7 patients for gadobutrol ( P < .0001, all readers). Highly significant ( P < .0001, all readers) preference for gadobenate dimeglumine was demonstrated for all other qualitative end points. Inter-reader agreement was good for all evaluations (κ = 0.414–0.629). Significantly superior CNR and LBR were determined for gadobenate dimeglumine ( P < .019, all readers). CONCLUSIONS: Significantly greater morphologic information and lesion enhancement are achieved on brain MR imaging with 0.1-mmol/kg gadobenate dimeglumine compared with gadobutrol at an equivalent dose.     Spin Resolution of the Electron-Gas Correlation Energy: Positive same-spin contribution

    The negative correlation energy per particle of a uniform electron gas of density parameter rsr_s and spin polarization ζ\zeta is well known, but its spin resolution into up-down, up-up, and down-down contributions is not. Widely-used estimates are incorrect, and hamper the development of reliable density functionals and pair distribution functions. For the spin resolution, we present interpolations between high- and low-density limits that agree with available Quantum Monte Carlo data. In the low-density limit for ζ=0\zeta = 0, we find that the same-spin correlation energy is unexpectedly positive, and we explain why.
