The hypotensive effectiveness of defatted crude ethanolic extract, ethyl acetate and butanolic fractions of Cassytha filiformis L. have been compared on anesthesized prednisone-saline-induced (PN) and Prednisone-saline-LNAME -induced (PNL) hypertensive rats. Extract/fractions were given at the dose of 5 mg/kg each while a group treated by 100 μmol/kg oftempol was used as comparison. Extract/fractions/vehicle were commence in 3 consecutive doses intravenously every one hour interval. The systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) of the animals were measured (Biopac® MP 150 Data Acquisition System). Data were presented as the percentage changes of those parameters and analyzed by three way ANOVA followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. Results showed that the ethanolic defatted extract and tempol decreased animal SBP, DBP, MAP and HR significantly (p0.1). The average percentage decrease of animal SBP and MAP on PNL rats were higher (p0.1). Repeated dose of all samples tent to decrease animal SBP and HR (p0.1). These results indicated that the hypotensive effectiveness of the defatted ethanolic extract of Cassytha filiformis is better as compared to its ethyl acetate and butanolic fractions and these effects are greater on oxidative stress related hypertensive rats

We report a case of encephalitis in a young male patient with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who initially presented with typical symptoms of fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath but later on developed acute respiratory distress syndrome and required mechanical ventilation. Two days post-extubation, the patient developed new-onset generalized tonic-clonic seizures and confusion. MRI of the brain was done and it showed an abnormal signal in the bilateral medial cortical frontal region. His cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed a characteristic picture of a viral infection with a high white blood cell count and normal glucose and protein levels. After ruling out all common causes of viral encephalitis such as herpes simplex virus (HSV) and based on the review of available literature regarding the neurological manifestations of COVID-19, this case was labeled as acute viral encephalitis secondary to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection

Potential methane emission reduction strategies from rice cultivation systems in Bangladesh: a critical synthesis with global meta - data

Methane (CH4) is one of the dominant greenhouse gases (GHG) that is largely emitted from rice fields and thus, significantly contributes to global warming. Significant efforts have been made to find out suitable strategies to mitigate CH4 emission from rice culture. However, the effectiveness of these management practices is often diverse with negative, no, or positive impacts making it difficult to adopt under a particular condition. The diversity of rice cultivation in terms of agro-climatic conditions and cultivation practices makes it difficult for providing specific recommendations. Here, we collected data from a total of 198 studies reporting 1052 observations. The management practices are categorized into five different management practices i.e., water, organic and inorganic fertilizer management, crop establishment method, and agronomic practices while major categories were subdivided into different classes. To test statistically significant differences in the effectiveness between major management practices, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied. The Gaussian and bootstrapping model were applied to find out the best estimate of the effectiveness of each practice. In addition, mechanisms controlling the CH4 emission reductions were synthesized. Next, the adoption potentials of these practices were assessed based on the existing rice cultivation systems in Bangladesh. Our results showed that water and organic matter management were the most effective methods irrespective of the growing conditions. When these technologies are customized to Bangladesh, water management and crop establishment methods seem most feasible. Among the rice-growing seasons in Bangladesh, there is a larger scope to adopt these management practices in the Boro season (December to May), while these scopes are minimal in the other two seasons due to their rain-fed nature of cultivation. Altogether, our study provides fundamental insights on CH4 reductions strategies from rice fields in Bangladesh

A Set Of Mobile And Portable Robots For Nondestructive Inspection which Cover Critical Applications Across All The Key Use Industries

This paper describes the prototyping of some world first designs of mobile, portable robots which between them cover important safety critical applications across the spectrum of key civil and industrial engineering structures such as aircraft, ships, dams, nuclear power plant and storage tanks located in hazardous environments. The systems include novel features such as being able to climb over surfaces of complex contour to deploy the inspection sensors at each test point, ability to change surfaces, to work submerged in hazardous liquids and to scan large test areas. The rationale for using a robotic approach to NDT data acquisition is presented, given that it does involve some complexity in instrumentation design compared with current practice. A modular approach using as great a proportion of off-the-shelf components as possible has been used to greatly reduce the prototyping tim

Spatial profiling of optical gain for optimizing lasing in plasmonic nano-lasers

    Get PDF
Design of cylindrical metal-clad semiconductor nano-lasers is undertaken. Specific attention is given to determining the modal gain instructures supporting TM01 Surface Plasmon Polarition (SPP) modes. For representative structures it is indicated that cavity lengths oforder 100 μm enable lasing action. In comparison structures supporting TE01 core-confined modes having cavity lengths of order 10 μm may sustain lasing. The analysis methodology adopted offers means to affect the design of candidate semiconductor lasers for bespokeapplications

COVID-19 Induced Myocarditis: A Rare Cause of Heart Failure.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing lung injury has been well documented in the literature recently. They do so primarily by binding to the membrane-bound form of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) receptors. However, since these receptors are also expressed in the heart and blood vessels, coronavirus can also cause damage to these organs by binding to the ACE-2 receptors. A typical case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) usually presents with respiratory symptoms like cough and shortness of breath accompanied by fever. The literature regarding this pandemic has been growing and now we know very well that the effect of this deadly virus is not restricted to the lungs alone. It can, unfortunately, cause various other complications ranging from neurological damage to even myocardial injury in rare cases. We present an interesting case of a 40-year-old male patient who presented to us with shortness of breath. When further investigated, the patient was found to have a new onset of heart failure secondary to COVID-19 induced myocarditis

Background: The purpose of this study was to select appropriate surfactants or blends of surfactants to study the ternary phase diagram behavior of newly introduced palm kernel oil esters. Methods: Nonionic surfactant blends of Tween® and Tween®/Span® series were screened based on their solubilization capacity with water for palm kernel oil esters. Tween® 80 and five blends of Tween® 80/Span® 80 and Tween® 80/Span® 85 in the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) value range of 10.7–14.0 were selected to study the phase diagram behavior of palm kernel oil esters using the water titration method at room temperature. Results: High solubilization capacity was obtained by Tween® 80 compared with other surfactants of Tween® series. High HLB blends of Tween® 80/Span® 85 and Tween® 80/Span® 80 at HLB 13.7 and 13.9, respectively, have better solubilization capacity compared with the lower HLB values of Tween® 80/Span® 80. All the selected blends of surfactants were formed as waterin- oil microemulsions, and other dispersion systems varied in size and geometrical layout in the triangles. The high solubilization capacity and larger areas of the water-in-oil microemulsion systems were due to the structural similarity between the lipophilic tail of Tween® 80 and the oleyl group of the palm kernel oil esters. Conclusion: This study suggests that the phase diagram behavior of palm kernel oil esters, water, and nonionic surfactants is not only affected by the HLB value, but also by the structural similarity between palm kernel oil esters and the surfactant used. The information gathered in this study is useful for researchers and manufacturers interested in using palm kernel oil esters in pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparation. The use of palm kernel oil esters can improve drug delivery and reduce the cost of cosmetics

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), apart from commonly involving the respiratory system, has its impact on the central nervous system, with a wide spectrum of clinical presentations ranging from headaches to ischemic strokes. The ongoing research regarding this novel disease has found that there is a very high prevalence of thrombotic episodes especially in critically ill patients when compared to severe presentation of other viral illnesses. This COVID-19-associated coagulopathy has a very complex etiology with the ability to form thrombus in arteries, veins, and microvasculatures of different organs. We present a unique case of a young woman with underlying COVID-19 who unfortunately developed locked-in syndrome due to bilateral pontine infarction during the course of her illness
