Effects of Cultural Practices on Total Phenolics and Vitamin C Content of Organic Table Grapes

    Get PDF
The total phenolic and vitamin C contents of organic table grapes were determined by spectrophotometry and HPLC, respectively, after several quality-increasing treatments were applied at véraison for two growing seasons. Cane girdling and cluster-berry thinning resulted in different responses in the cultivars. ‘Red Globe’ generally was found to produce the lowest quantity of total phenolics in the berries, while ‘Trakya Ilkeren’ was the cultivar that accumulated the highest phenolics. Vitamin C accumulation in the berries was also affected by the treatments. The effect of the treatments was inconclusive in ‘Buca Razakısı’. The application of both girdling and thinning caused more accumulation of vitamin C in the ‘Alphonse L.’ and ‘Trakya Ilkeren’ berries

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI), age, and sex and morphological risk factors that may cause internal knee injuries. The magnetic resonance images of 728 participants who met the inclusion criteria and had a mean age of 34.4?±?6.8 years were analyzed retrospectively. Demographic differences were analyzed by measuring 17 morphological parameters known to be associated with internal knee injuries. Men had a higher anterior cruciate ligament length (ACLL), anterior cruciate ligament width, (ACLW) lateral femoral condylar width (LFCW), medial femoral condylar width (MFCW), lateral femoral condylar depth (LFCD), distal femoral width (DFW), and intercondylar femoral width (IFW) than women (P?<?.05). By contrast, the medial meniscus bone angle (MMBA) was lower in men than in women (P?<?.05). Women aged 31 to 40 years had a lower Insall-Salvati index (ISI) and lateral tibial posterior slope (LTPS) than those aged 21 to 30 years (P?<?.05), whereas men aged 31 to 40 years had a lower ISI than those aged 21 to 30 years (P?<?.05). Women with BMI???30 had a higher LFCW and MFCW but a lower ISI than those with BMI?<?30 (P?<?.05). Men with BMI???30 had a higher LFCW, MFCW, DFW, and MMBA than those with BMI?<?30 (P?<?.05). The use of value ranges structured according to demographic characteristics, rather than a single value range for all patient groups, may contribute to the evaluation and treatment of the morphological features that are thought to be effective in the development of internal knee injuries. These values may also shed light on future radiological risk scoring systems and artificial intelligence applications in medicine. Copyright © 2023 the Author(s). Get PDF
This paper proposes a new current conveyorbased high-output impedance single-input three-output current mode filter with minimum configuration. It contains two dual output second generation current conveyors, one third generation dual output current conveyor, and four grounded resistors and capacitors. The circuit simultaneously provides low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass filtering outputs, without any passive component matching conditions and restrictions on input signals. Additionally, the proposed circuit offers following advantages: Minimum active and passive element count, high output and low input impedances, suitable for cascading identical currentmode sections, all passive elements are grounded (no virtual grounding), low natural frequency and Q-factor sensitivities. The influences of non-ideal current conveyors on the proposed circuit are researched in the last

In parallel with this, ?sustainable urban transformation? has been designated as the solution to the common problems of our planet?s cities. The planning and project development approach summarized in the article aims to emphasize the importance of the opportunities presented by ?Urban Public Spaces? as instruments of transformation planning in the development or restructuring of urban spaces. We anticipate the promotion of and develop the conceptual framework for the use of ?urban spaces? as centers of attraction providing the necessary catalytic environment and critical mass for urban development. The development of the conceptual scope and physical boundaries of ?urban spaces? discussed in this article is important more as an alternative approach than as a means of reorganizing ownership patterns. The essence of this approach is not about ?ownership?; it is rather about that which is ?social?, about ?social value? which upholds social benefits above individual gains, about ?socialization of urban life?, and about ?urban consciousness?. It is related to the spatial formations of human coexistence with the ?other? which shape our cultural mosaic. Keywords: Public space, spatial transformation, sustainable urban transformation, urban design, urban development

Modular Orthopaedic Tissue Engineering With Implantable Microcarriers and Canine Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) hold significant potential for tissue engineering applications. Modular tissue engineering involves the use of cellularized “building blocks” that can be assembled via a bottom-up approach into larger tissue-like constructs. This approach emulates more closely the complexity associated hierarchical tissues compared with conventional top-down tissue engineering strategies. The current study describes the combination of biodegradable porous poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) TIPS microcarriers with canine adipose-derived MSC (cAdMSC) for use as implantable conformable building blocks in modular tissue engineering applications. Optimal conditions were identified for the attachment and proliferation of cAdMSC on the surface of the microcarriers. Culture of the cellularized microcarriers for 21 days in transwell insert plates under conditions used to induce either chondrogenic or osteogenic differentiation resulted in self-assembly of solid 3D tissue constructs. The tissue constructs exhibited phenotypic characteristics indicative of successful osteogenic or chondrogenic differentiation, as well as viscoelastic mechanical properties. This strategy paves the way to create in situ tissue engineered constructs via modular tissue engineering for therapeutic applications

The impact of public perception of earthquake risk on Istanbul's housing market

    Get PDF
This paper examines the impact of public perception of earthquake risk on Istanbul's housing market by investigating the spatial distribution of the average house values and the changes in average house prices in Istanbul between 1995 and 2000. Soil type and distance to the fault lines in the Sea of Marmara are used as proxies for public perception of earthquake risk. The results of regression analysis show that distance from fault lines is an important factor in explaining house values and its impact on house values increased after the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake. Furthermore, there is a quadratic relationship between soil type and house values. However, none of the measures of earthquake risk significantly affect the change in house values. These findings suggest that public perception of earthquake risk enhanced and the public information about earthquake hazard had significant impact on house values

Utilization of GelMA with phosphate glass fibers for glial cell alignment

    Get PDF
Glial cell alignment in tissue engineered constructs is essential for achieving functional outcomes in neural recovery. While gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) hydrogel offers superior biocompatibility along with permissive structure and tailorable mechanical properties, phosphate glass fibers (PGFs) can provide physical cues for directionality of neural growth. Aligned PGFs were fabricated by a melt quenching and fiber drawing method and utilized with synthesized GelMA hydrogel. The mechanical properties of GelMA and biocompatibility of the GelMA-PGFs composite were investigated in vitro using rat glial cells. GelMA with 86% methacrylation degree were photo-crosslinked using 0.1%wt photo-initiator (PI). Photocrosslinking under UV exposure for 60 s was used to produce hydrogels (GelMA-60). PGFs were introduced into the GelMA before crosslinking. Storage modulus and loss modulus of GelMA-60 was 24.73 ± 2.52 and 1.08 ± 0.23 kN/m2 , respectively. Increased cell alignment was observed in GelMA-PGFs compared with GelMA hydrogel alone. These findings suggest GelMA-PGFs can provide glial cells with physical cues necessary to achieve cell alignment. This approach could further be used to achieve glial cell alignment in bioengineered constructs designed to bridge damaged nerve tissue

Near-field Localization with a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Acting as Lens

    Get PDF
Exploiting wavefront curvature enables localization with limited infrastructure and hardware complexity. With the introduction of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), new opportunities arise, in particular when the RIS is functioning as a lens receiver. We investigate the localization of a transmitter using a RIS-based lens in close proximity to a single receive antenna element attached to reception radio frequency chain. We perform a Fisher information analysis, evaluate the impact of different lens configurations, and propose a two-stage localization algorithm. Our results indicate that positional beamforming can lead to better performance when a priori location information is available, while random beamforming is preferred when a priori information is lacking. Our simulation results for a moderate size lens operating at 28 GHz showcased that decimeter-level accuracy can be attained within 3 meters to the lens
